Attitudes of general dental practitioners towards biopsy procedures
2011
Objectives: A dentist is required to detect and recognise oral lesions and inform the patient accordingly by providing a diagnosis and adequate treatment plan. Biopsy serves as an important aid in achieving this goal; however, its use is not so widespread in general dental practice. The objective of the present study was to explore the attitudes of general dental practitioners in Belgaum city towards biopsy for diagnosis of oral lesions. Material and methods: A self designed questionnaire was administered to 74 general dental practitioners in Belgaum city, in the southern region of India, consisting of several items addressing the socio-demographic and professional aspects and their attitud…
Silica as a morphogenetically active inorganic polymer.
2013
At present the scaffolds used for bioprinting of cells do not elicit morphogenetic responses in the cells. In the present study we approached a solution by studying the effect of an inorganic silica supplement added to an Na-alginate matrix. Bone- and osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells were embedded into this organic polymeric matrix which was additionally enriched with 400 μM prehydrolyzed TEOS [tetra-ethoxy-silane], a source of ortho-silicate. In this silica-based matrix the cells synthesized hydroxyapatite crystallites after exposure to a mineralization activation cocktail composed of β-glycerophosphate, ascorbic acid and dexamethasone. The degree of hydroxyapatite synthesis, determined by sta…
Evaluation of near-Infrared fluorescence-conjugated peptides for visualization of human epidermal receptor 2-overexpressed gastric cancer.
2021
338 Background: HER2 is highly overexpressed in many kinds of cancers with a poor prognosis. Recently, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence-based imaging is a growing field for both pre-clinical and clinical application. In this study, we aimed to synthesize Human Epidermal Receptor2 (HER2)-specific near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probes and evaluate their applicability in cancer-specific image-guided surgeries using an animal model. Methods: An NIR dye emitting light of 800 nm (IRDye800CW, Li-COR, USA) was conjugated to trastuzumab and HER2-specific affibody using click mechanism. HER2 affinity was assessed by the surface plasmon resonance technique. HER2 positive/negative gastric cancer cel…
A quest for initiating cells of head and neck cancer and their treatment.
2010
The biology of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) and other cancers have been related to cancer stem-like cells (CSC). Specific markers, which vary considerably depending on tumor type or tissue of origin, characterize CSC. CSC are cancer initiating, sustaining and mostly quiescent. Compared to bulk tumors, CSC are less sensitive to chemo- and radiotherapy and may have low immunogenicity. Therapeutic targeting of CSC may improve clinical outcome. HNSCC has two main etiologies: human papillomavirus, a virus infecting epithelial stem cells, and tobacco and alcohol abuse. Here, current knowledge of HNSCC-CSC biology is reviewed and parallels to CSC of other origin are drawn where n…
General anesthesia for oral and dental care in paediatric patients with special needs : a systematic review
2020
Background The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the characteristics, needs and current situation of dental care for pediatric patients with special needs. Material and methods An exhaustive search for literature published until June 1, 2020. It was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and EBSCO, with the following keywords: Oral Surgical Procedures and Dentistry, Operational and Anesthesia, General Y (Spanish[lang] or English[lang] ) Y (infant[MeSH] Or child[MeSH] Or adolescent[MeSH]). The research was carried out following the PRISMA research methodology. Results The most common indication for general anesthesia (GA) was t…
Uncommon Synchronous Association between Ovarian Carcinoma and Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor: A Case Study and Literature Review
2013
Background The association of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and other cancers is well known, but its synchronous occurrence with gynecological malignancies is very uncommon. Usually, the diagnosis is accidentally established. We describe a patient with GIST and concurrent ovarian cancer and discuss the clinical implications of this finding. Case report A 64-year-old woman with a prior diagnosis of ovarian cancer developed a second recurrence after having undergone two operations and adjuvant chemotherapy. While tumor debulking was performed, a small, nonsuspicious lesion was removed from the greater curvature of the stomach. Histology revealed a GIST. Conclusion The association of …
The Role of SVZ Stem Cells in Glioblastoma
2019
As most common primary brain cancer, glioblastoma is also the most aggressive and malignant form of cancer in the adult central nervous system. Glioblastomas are genetic and transcriptional heterogeneous tumors, which in spite of intensive research are poorly understood. Over the years conventional therapies failed to affect a cure, resulting in low survival rates of affected patients. To improve the clinical outcome, an important approach is to identify the cells of origin. One potential source for these are neural stem cells (NSCs) located in the subventricular zone, which is one of two niches in the adult nervous system where NSCs with the capacity of self-renewal and proliferation resid…
Oral health status and self-rated health in 80 year-old community dwelling people
2012
Oral health is an important discipline of health that can affect functioning of health and have severe consequences. The aim of the study was to examine the oral health of the older people and how oral health is associated with self-rated health. The study was a part of Evergreen Project conducted by the University of Jyväskylä. The participants were 80-year-old persons living in the city of Jyväskylä, People who were living in institutions were excluded from the study sample (N= 262, 74 men, 188 women). The study included clinical measures of oral health such as participant’s need for dental care. The data were analyzed by chi square test, t-test and logistic regression analysis. Among men…
