Sedimentary environment, lithostratigraphy and dating of sediment sequences from Arctic lakes Revvatnet and Svartvatnet in Hornsund, Svalbard
2016
Abstract The sedimentary environment, sediment characteristics and age-depth models of sediment sequences from Arctic lakes Revvatnet and Svartvatnet, located near the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund, southern Svalbard (77°N), were studied with a view to establishing a basis for paleolimnological climate and environmental reconstructions. The results indicate that catchment-to-lake hydroclimatic processes probably affect the transportation, distribution and accumulation of sediments in different parts of lakes Revvatnet and Svartvatnet. Locations with continuous and essentially stable sedimentary environments were found in both lakes between water depths of 9 and 26 m. We used several diff…

Human Ecology and the Southern Iberian Neolithic: An Approach from Archaeobotany and Archaeozoology
2022
Archaeology has long incorporated the methods of the natural sciences and the theoretical principles of the overarching scientific framework. Most archaeologists acknowledge the importance of a systemic perspective in the study of the evolution of human behavior, with emphasis on the contexts in which individuals and populations lived and interacted. This article develops an ecological approach to the subsistence patterns and dynamics of the Neolithic populations in the westernmost regions of the Mediterranean. Methodologically, it implements a systematic quantitative exploration of the structure and evolution of the botanical and zoological taxa documented in a human settlement. Empiricall…
The Calabrian Stage redefined
2008
The name Calabrian was introduced in the geological literature by the French stratigrapher Maurice Gignoux in 1910, and later described in his important monograph (633 pages) "Les formations marines pliocènes et quaternaires de l'Italie du sud et de la Sicile" published in 1913. Detailed data were provided on several sections (Santa Maria di Catanzaro, Caraffa, Monasterace, Palermo) and on their fossil content. The Calabrian Stage has commonly been used for over fifty years as the oldest subdivision of the Quaternary, notably in the time scales of Berggren & van Couvering (1974) and Haq & Eysinga (1987). However, after the GSSP for the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary (P/P) was approved by INQ…
Revisión sistemática y bioestratigrafía del género Alueva Sdzuy, 1961 (Ellipsocephalidae, Trilobita, Cámbrico).
2013
150 years of the discovery of the Cambrian Lagerstätte of Murero (Cadenas Ibéricas, NE Spain).
2012
The classical, lower and middle Cambrian Lagerstiitte of Murero (NE Spain) was first reported by the French geologist Edouard de Verneuil in 1862, and now it achieves 150 years of geological works. In this paper the main stratigraphical and palaeontological characteristics of the site are given. Murero is exceptional because the coexistence of both skeletal and soft - bodied groups along a continuous record of ca. 10 million years, which is subdivided into 14 trilobite biozones. The educational and social interest of the site is also highlighted.
El yacimiento Cámbrico de Murero (prov. de Zaragoza) ejemplo de convergencia entre ciencia y patrimonio
2017
The classical, lower and middle Cambrian Lagerstätte of Murero was discovered in 1862, and now it achieves more than 150 years of geological and palaeontological works. In this paper we show briefly the history of the site research and the state of the knowledge on its stratigraphy and palaeontology together with the Biota of Murero. It has been recorded in Murero and several localities of the Iberian Chains where the Mesones Group crops out. The Biota of Murero is exceptional because the coexistence of both skeletal and soft-bodied fossils along a continuous record of circa 10 million years between the Bilbilian to lower Languedocian stages, that are equivalent to Stage 4 of Cambrian to Dr…
150 años del descubrimiento del yacimiento cámbrico de Murero (Cadenas Ibéricas, NE España).
2013
The lower-middle Cambrian palaeontological site of Murero (Cadenas Ibéricas, NE Spain) is a classical locality of the Cambrian in Europe. The site was first reported by the French geologist Edouard de Verneuil in 1862, and now it achieves 150 years of geological works contributing to a better knowledge of the Cambrian Period. Murero is an exceptional Lagerstätte because the coexistence of both skeletal and soft-bodied groups along a continuous record of ca. 8 million years, which is subdivided into 14 trilobite zones. Murero was the first palaeontological site in Spain to obtain the highest protection figure (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) from the Spanish Administration in 1997. Since then…
Biostratigraphy of the Ribota and Huérmeda formations (Cambrian Series 2) in the Comarca del Aranda (Zaragoza province), Iberian Chains (NE Spain)
2022
This article presents a detailed biostratigraphic analysis of the Cambrian Series 2 Ribota and Huérmeda formations of four sections of the Iberian Chains (NE Spain), and a systematic study of their trilobite faunas. We identified four major assemblages: two in the middle part of the Ribota Formation, one at the base of the Huérmeda Formation and one at the top of the Huérmeda Formation. The studied species permit the assignment of these formations to the middle and upper Marianian and probably lower Bilbilian stages in the regional stratigraphic chart for the Iberian Peninsula, which correlates with an interval around the Cambrian Stage 3–4 boundary. The assemblages exhibit a great correlat…
