The MAST-FV/FE scheme for the simulation of thermohaline processes in variable density saturated porous media

2009

A novel methodology for the simulation of 2D thermohaline double diffusive processes, driven by heterogeneous temperature and concentration fields in variable-density satu- rated porous media, is presented. The stream function is used to describe the flow field and it is defined in terms of mass flux. The partial differential equations governing system is given by the mass conservation equation of the fluid phase written in terms of the mass- based stream function, as well as by the advection–diffusion transport equations of the contaminant concentration and of the heat. The unknown variables are the stream func- tion, the contaminant concentration and the temperature. The governing equatio…

Education for development in the university context. Why and for what?

2021

An examination of teacher-student interactions in inclusive classrooms: teacher interviews and classroom observations

2013

Teacher–student interactions in 17 inclusive classrooms were examined using a mixed-methods approach that involved quantitative analysis of interactions recorded during classroom observations and follow-up interviews with seven general educators. Observational findings suggest that classrooms were organised along traditional lines with the vast majority of interactions provided by general educators to the whole class, followed by brief intervals of 1 : 1 interactions directed towards individual students, most frequently children with disabilities. Interview findings suggest that teachers were aware of the greater individual attention devoted to students with disabilities and described a num…

Infiniviz: Taking Quake 3 Arena on a Large-Scale Display System to the Next Level

2018

The authors of this paper have previously presented a large-scale display system called Infiniviz in other publications. Infiniviz attempts to improve network bandwidth consumption and computational performance compared to other existing large-scale display systems. Since the previous publications have been made in early development stages of Infiniviz, only the overview of the software architecture and details of hardware implementation have been presented so far. This paper contains a real-life test of Infiniviz running Quake 3 Arena at a resolution of 9600 x 5400 at 24 fps. Also, in this paper, the authors have tried to match their results to what has been published by other researchers …

Short-term recovery of benthos following disturbance from stream habitat rehabilitation

1994

The recovery of benthic macroinvertebrates after disturbance from stream rehabilitation was studied in the River Livojoki, northern Finland. The stream that had been channelized for log transport was rehabilitated on 1 July 1992 by digging holes and inserting boulders. We measured habitat characteristics and sampled benthic animals before and after rehabilitation, including an unrehabilitated control site. The immediate effect of rehabilitation was a slight decrease in the abundances of benthic insects. Recolonization occurred rapidly, within 10 days. Disturbance of the rehabilitation did not have a detectable effect on the macroinvertebrate community. Most species-level changes and communi…

Building Ontologies from XML Data Sources

2009

In this paper, we present a tool called X2OWL that aims at building an OWL ontology from an XML datasource. This method is based on XML schema to automatically generate the ontology structure, as well as, a set of mapping bridges. The presented method also includes a refinement step that allows to clean the mapping bridges and possibly to restructure the generated ontology.

Requirements for XML document database systems

2001

The shift from SGML to XML has created new demands for managing structured documents. Many XML documents will be transient representations for the purpose of data exchange between different types of applications, but there will also be a need for effective means to manage persistent XML data as a database. In this paper we explore requirements for an XML database management system. The purpose of the paper is not to suggest a single type of system covering all necessary features. Instead the purpose is to initiate discussion of the requirements arising from document collections, to offer a context in which to evaluate current and future solutions, and to encourage the development of proper …

Ontology-based integration of XML data: Schematic marks as a bridge between syntax and semantic level

2007

This paper presents an ontology integration approach of XML data. The approach is composed of two pillars the first of which is based on formal language and XML grammars analysis. The second pillar is based on ontology and domain ontology analysis. The keystone of this architecture which creates a bridge between the two pillars is based on the concept of schematic marks introduced in this paper. These schematic marks make it possible to establish the link between the syntactic level and the semantic level for our integration framework.
