Gold nanoparticle interactions with endothelial cells cultured under physiological conditions
2017
PEGylated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have an extended circulation time after intravenous injection in vivo and exhibit favorable properties for biosensing, diagnostic imaging, and cancer treatment. No impact of PEGylated AuNPs on the barrier forming properties of endothelial cells (ECs) has been reported, but recent studies demonstrated that unexpected effects on erythrocytes are observed. Almost all studies to date have been with static-cultured ECs. Herein, ECs maintained under physiological cyclic stretch and flow conditions and used to generate a blood-brain barrier model were exposed to 20 nm PEGylated AuNPs. An evaluation of toxic effects, cell stress, the release profile of pro-infla…
A probabilistic condensed representation of data for stream mining
2014
Data mining and machine learning algorithms usually operate directly on the data. However, if the data is not available at once or consists of billions of instances, these algorithms easily become infeasible with respect to memory and run-time concerns. As a solution to this problem, we propose a framework, called MiDEO (Mining Density Estimates inferred Online), in which algorithms are designed to operate on a condensed representation of the data. In particular, we propose to use density estimates, which are able to represent billions of instances in a compact form and can be updated when new instances arrive. As an example for an algorithm that operates on density estimates, we consider t…
DEFINING MACROINVERTEBRATE ASSEMBLAGE TYPES OF HEADWATER STREAMS: IMPLICATIONS FOR BIOASSESSMENT AND CONSERVATION
2003
We used data from 235 boreal headwater streams in Finland to examine whether macroinvertebrate assemblages constitute clearly definable types, and how well biologically defined assemblage types can be predicted using environmental variables. Two- way indicator species analysis produced 10 assemblage types, which differed significantly from each other (multiresponse permutation procedure, MRPP). However, based on MRPP and nonmetric multidimensional scaling, there was wide variation among sites within each assemblage type, and high degrees of overlap among assemblage types. Such continuous variation was also evidenced by the low number of effective indicator taxa (indicator value method) for …
The school staff's perception of their ability to teach special educational needs pupils in inclusive settings in Finland
2015
Recent studies have suggested that the professional training received by general educators does not adequately prepare them to properly implement inclusion-based practices. The idea of inclusion in practice has not significantly changed the situation of teaching pupils with special educational needs (SENs) in mainstream classes. This study's primary intent is to examine the factors that identify the school staff's ability to meet the needs of SEN pupils in their daily teaching situations. A total of 187 elementary school teachers, principals and teaching assistants in a Finnish city completed a structured questionnaire that used a self-evaluation method. Two components were generalised acco…
Sea Wave Energy. A Review of the Current Technologies and Perspectives
2021
The proposal of new technologies capable of producing electrical energy from renewable sources has driven research into seas and oceans. Research finds this field very promising in the future of renewable energies, especially in areas where there are specific climatic and morphological characteristics to exploit large amounts of energy from the sea. In general, this kind of energy is referred to as six energy resources: waves, tidal range, tidal current, ocean current, ocean thermal energy conversion, and saline gradient. This review has the aim to list several wave-energy converter power plants and to analyze their years of operation. In this way, a focus is created to understand how many …
A Teledentistry system for the second opinion
2014
In this paper we present a Teledentistry system aimed to the Second Opinion task. It make use of a particular camera called intra-oral camera, also called dental camera, in order to perform the photo shooting and real-time video of the inner part of the mouth. The pictures acquired by the Operator with such a device are sent to the Oral Medicine Expert (OME) by means of a current File Transfer Protocol (FTP) service and the real-time video is channeled into a video streaming thanks to the VideoLan client/server (VLC) application. It is composed by a HTML5 web-pages generated by PHP and allows to perform the Second Opinion both when Operator and OME are logged and when one of them is offline.
Neurogenesis and Neuronal Regeneration in the Adult Reptilian Brain
2002
Evidence accumulated over the last few decades demonstrates that all reptiles examined thus far continue to add neurons at a high rate and in many regions of the adult brain. This so-called adult neurogenesis has been described in the olfactory bulbs, rostral forebrain, all cortical areas, anterior dorsal ventricular ridge, septum, striatum, nucleus sphericus, and cerebellum. The rate of neuronal production varies greatly among these brain areas. Moreover, striking differences in the rate and distribution of adult neurogenesis have been noted among species. In addition to producing new neurons in the adult brain, lizards, and possibly other reptiles as well, are capable of regenerating larg…
Defective Postnatal Neurogenesis and Disorganization of the Rostral Migratory Stream in Absence of theVax1Homeobox Gene
2004
The subventricular zone (SVZ) is one of the sources of adult neural stem cells (ANSCs) in the mouse brain. Precursor cells proliferate in the SVZ and migrate through the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB), where they differentiate into granule and periglomerular cells. Few transcription factors are known to be responsible for regulating NSC proliferation, migration, and differentiation processes; even fewer have been found to be responsible for the organization of the SVZ and RMS. For this reason, we studied the ventral anterior homeobox (Vax1) gene in NSC proliferation and in SVZ organization. We found thatVax1is strongly expressed in the SVZ and in the RMS and that,…
Classical and Quantum Computations with Restricted Memory
2018
Automata and branching programs are known models of computation with restricted memory. These models of computation were in focus of a large number of researchers during the last decades. Streaming algorithms are a modern model of computation with restricted memory. In this paper, we present recent results on the comparative computational power of quantum and classical models of branching programs and streaming algorithms.
Following the Money: Revenue Stream Constituents in Case of Within-firm Variation
2014
The idea of this paper stems from the perception that the concept of revenue stream requires clarification and further division to be applicable to businesses with high internal variation in their methods of capturing revenue. Current study sets out to investigate the concept of revenue stream through an overview of previous literature and a case study to demonstrate how revenue streams of a b2b (business-to-business) software service firm can be analyzed by elaborating the concept further. The aim is to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the relevant constituents of the revenue stream concept within a b2b software services firm? 2) How revenue stream as part of the busine…
