Recurrent daily rainfall patterns over South Africa and associated dynamics during the core of the austral summer
2010
This paper investigates the influence of some modes of climate variability on the spatio-temporal rainfall variability over South Africa during the core of the rainy season, December to February (DJF). All analyses are based directly on the rainfall field instead of atmospheric processes and dynamics. An original agglomerative hierarchical clustering approach is used to classify daily rainfall patterns recorded at 5352 stations from DJF 1971 to DJF 1999. Five clusters are retained for analysis. Amongst them, one cluster looks most like the rainfall and circulation mean picture. Another one, representing 37% of the days, describes strong negative rainfall anomalies over South Africa resultin…
Investigating the Affordances and Constraints of SimReal for Mathematical Learning : A Case Study in Teacher Education
2019
Visualizations tools are one of the most innovative technologies that emerged the last few years in educational settings. They provide new potentialities for mathematical learning by means of dynamic animations and representations, interactive simulations, and live streaming of lessons. Moreover, visualization tools have the potential to foster a visual, dynamic, distributed, and embodied mathematics rather than individual achievements and static representations. This paper uses the visualization tool SimReal in teacher education to explore the affordances of the tool for learning mathematics. It proposes a framework that captures the affordances of SimReal at a technological, pedagogical, …
Observable Streaming Potential in Membranes
2003
Theories describing the electrokinetic processes in membranes usually involve nonobservable variables. One of these phenomena is the streaming potential, i.e., the electric potential generated by a pressure difference imposed across the membrane system. In this work the streaming potential is successfully described by using observable variables in the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The observable electric potential is the central quantity of the transport equations. The relaxation with time of this electric potential difference is well explained by the solute flux in these transport equations. The fluxes and forces defined in the formulation permit one to analyze the…
Network Analysis of Platform Ecosystems: The Case of Internet of Things Ecosystem
2015
Software platform providers are often seen as the cornerstone of their business ecosystem, where the other ecosystem players utilize the platform’s standardized components together with complementary components for making applications. These platforms are also becoming a cornerstone of the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) business ecosystem comprised of the companies who provide Internet-enabled devices, applications, connectivity solutions, and the platforms for the IoT usage. While a number of enabling technologies for IoT is available, the question remains what kind of ecosystem emerges around IoT platform providers and whether this ecosystem is evolving in line with the theoretical mod…
Adopting XML for Large-Scale Information
2011
This book has presented many different ways to encode information in XML format and the purposes for doing so. In this concluding chapter we consider problems related to managing XML information assets and the methods available to address those problems. Approaches for persistently storing XML data can be divided into file storage and database storage, and the research community has been especially active in designing new solutions for XML databases. However, adoption of XML often means massive migration procedures from some legacy data into the XML format; examples of migration cases are given. While describing the problems related to adopting XML, we give examples of the kinds of data fo…
Why Use XML?
2011
Since its inception a decade ago, XML has become a standard technology for software engineers, all Web browsers are able to parse and show XML documents, and huge XML data resources are available from the Internet. Many of the documents are in XHTML, but other XML applications are quite common as well. XML has also become a format that is increasingly common in the files of local disks. This success would not have been possible without collaborative efforts throughout the Web community. Such world-wide collaborative development has included standards, software applications, and case implementations that can serve as models when developing new solutions. In this chapter we consider what ki…
Nonlinear electrostatic oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron plasma
2017
We study the spatio-temporal evolution of the nonlinear electrostatic oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron (e-p) plasma using both analytics and simulations. Using a perturbative method we demonstrate that the nonlinear solutions change significantly when a pure electrostatic mode is excited at the linear level instead of a mixed upper-hybrid and zero-frequency mode that is considered in a recent study. The pure electrostatic oscillations undergo phase mixing nonlinearly. However, the presence of the magnetic field significantly delays the phase-mixing compared to that observed in the corresponding unmagnetized plasma. Using 1D PIC simulations we then analyze the damping of t…
Dissolved silica in the Garonne River waters : changes in the weathering dynamics
2000
The major ion chemistry of the Garonne River is indicative of seasonal variations in the weathering dynamics of the drainage basin. Using the geochemical model MEGA for calculation of the contribution of atmospheric CO2 to the total bicarbonate fluxes exported by the Garonne River allows estimations of the concentrations of the major dissolved elements that originate from silicate- and carbonate-rock weathering. The molecular ratio SiO2/Al2O3 was calculated for the 1989–1992 period to identify the main type of weathering in the Garonne River, and montmorillonite was shown to be the major mineral occurring in the weathering products. The seasonal variations of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio also showe…
Modeling and energy optimization of the operative parts of an air assisted drill
2016
In the context of sustainable farming, the optimization of the energy costs of agricultural operations allows shorter working times and high quality of the agricultural operations. This question relates particularly to the seeding. This operation one is decisive for the quality of the future harvest. The modern high capacity seed drills must be compatible with all the constraints. The main goal of this PhD thesis is thus to develop an innovative methodology, integrating the modeling tools, in order to reduce the energy consumption of the heavy seeding equipment. Thus, we explored four key aspects concerning air seed drill design: maneuverability of poly-articulated seed drills; establishmen…
Intimacy in Cinema: Critical Essays on English Language Film
2014
International audience; Though intimacy has been a wide concern in the humanities, it has received little critical attention in film studies. This collection of essays investigates both the potential intimacy of cinema as a medium and the possibility of a cinema of intimacy where it is least expected. As a notion defined by binaries--inside and outside, surface and depth, public and private, self and other--intimacy, because it implies sharing, calls into question the boundaries between these extremes, and the border separating mainstream cinema and independent or auteur cinema. Following on Thomas Elsaesser's theories of the relationship between the intimacy of cinema and the cinema of int…
