Safety, Fear and Neuromuscular Responses after a Resisted Knee Extension Performed to Failure in Patients with Severe Haemophilia
2021
BACKGROUND: low-moderate intensity strength training to failure increases strength and muscle hypertrophy in healthy people. However, no study assessed the safety and neuromuscular response of training to failure in people with severe haemophilia (PWH). The purpose of the study was to analyse neuromuscular responses, fear of movement, and possible adverse effects in PWH, after knee extensions to failure.METHODS: twelve severe PWH in prophylactic treatment performed knee extensions until failure at an intensity of five on the Borg CR10 scale. Normalised values of amplitude (nRMS) and neuromuscular fatigue were determined using surface electromyography for the rectus femoris, vastus medialis,…
Effect of post-space irrigation with acid solutions on bond strength and dentin penetrability using a self-adhesive cementation system
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T08:29:40Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-06-01 Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface treatments with 1% peracetic acid (PA), solution containing 17% EDTA (SmearClear, Kerr Endodontics), solution containing a combination of 17% EDTA with 2% chlorhexidine (QMix, Dentsply Sirona) on the post-space root dentin compared to 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on bond strength and resin tags length in dentin. Material and Methods: Forty human-canine roots were endodontically treated and the post space was prepared. The specimens were randomised into four groups (n = 10): control - irrigation with 2.5% NaO…
Muscle cramping in the marathon: dehydration and electrolyte depletion vs. muscle damage
2020
Martinez-Navarro, I, Montoya-Vieco, A, Collado, E, Hernando, B, Panizo, N, and Hernando, C. Muscle Cramping in the marathon: Dehydration and electrolyte depletion vs. muscle damage. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-Our aim was to compare dehydration variables, serum electrolytes, and muscle damage serum markers between runners who suffered exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMC) and runners who did not suffer EAMC in a road marathon. We were also interested in analyzing race pacing and training background. Nighty-eight marathoners took part in the study. Subjects were subjected to a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Before and after the race, blood and urine samples were collected and…
Erythritol-enriched powder and oral biofilm regrowth on dental implants: an in vitro study.
2021
Background Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are the main biological complications associated with dental implants. Since most authors agree that bacteria play a major etiological role, the main aims of this study were to determine if a formulation of erythritol and chlorhexidine applied with an air polishing system inhibits biofilm regrowth over dental implants and to compare the decontamination capacity of this therapy with that of mechanical removal by saline and gauze. Material and Methods A multispecies biofilm (P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, F. nucleatum, A. naeslundii, V. parvula and S. oralis) was grown for 14 days on 52 dental implants in an artificial mouth. Th…
Dietary intake and strength training adaptation in 50-70 -year old men and women : with special reference to muscle mass, strength, serum anabolic ho…
2007
Frailty has been defined as an age-related decrease of the physiologic systems that results in weakness, weight loss and decreased functional performance, thus increasing the risk of disability. The physical characteristics of frailty are affected by the amount of muscle mass and strength. Strength training (ST) can alleviate age-related declines in muscle mass, strength and physical function. However, there is controversy regarding whether dietary intake can improve the effects of ST. The present thesis assessed the effects of dietary intake (DI) on muscular, hormonal and metabolic adaptations to ST in healthy 50-70 year old people. In cross-sectional study I, maximal strength of the leg e…
EFFECT OF IONIC STRENGTH AND MEDIUM COMPOSITION ON THE REMOVAL OF Pb2+ BY ALGINATE GEL BEADS. DPVASV AND ICP-OES MEASUREMENTS.
2012
The biosorption, i.e. a passive sequestering process by metabolically inactive biomass, shows a growing interest for toxic metal ions removal from contaminated aqueous solutions (1), such as municipal and industrial wastewaters. Since the sorption mechanism occurs mainly by ion exchange between the metal ion present in solution and the counter ion of the biopolymer (2), the efficiency of the sorption process largely depends on ionic strength and on the medium composition of solution containing the metal ion to be removed. In order to evaluate quantitatively the influence of ionic strength and medium on the metal removal process by the biomass, we report here results of a study on the sorpti…
Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites
2016
This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Stiffness results differed from experiments by 1–17% . By adding into the models a third material phase representing the interface between the fibres and the matrix, the stress–strain c…
Polarization corrections to single-particle energies studied within the energy-density-functional and quasiparticle random-phase approximation approa…
2014
Background: Models based on using perturbative polarization corrections and mean-field blocking approxima- tion give conflicting results for masses of odd nuclei. Purpose: We systematically investigate the polarization and mean-field models, implemented within self- consistent approaches that use identical interactions and model spaces, to find reasons for the conflicts between them. Methods: For density-dependent interactions and with pairing correlations included, we derive and study links between the mean-field and polarization results obtained for energies of odd nuclei. We also identify and discuss differences between the polarization-correction and full particle-vibration-coupling (PV…
Modelling the dependence on medium and ionic strength of molybdate acidbase properties, and its interactions with phytate
2016
The importance of molybdenum from a biological, environmental and technological point of view is very well known since many decades [15]. In particular, it is mainly present in aqueous solutions as molybdate (MoO42), which is the biologically active form, entering in the cells by active transport systems. Though molybdate is the major species in neutral to basic pH conditions, at lower pH it undergoes protonation and, chiefly, polymerization, even at millimolar concentration levels [2]. Consequently, the modelling of its speciation and acidbase properties is not very simple, as demonstrated by the nonhomogeneity of available literature data. In this light, our group has started a systematic…
RC Columns Strengthened with Steel Angles and Battens: Experimental Results and Design Procedure
2013
In this paper, an analytical model for the design of axially loaded strengthened RC columns with steel angles and battens is presented. Cases of directly loaded and not directly loaded steel angles are considered. The model considers the contribution in confinement pressures caused by transverse battens and steel angles and the contribution in terms of the load-carrying capacity of steel angles subjected to axial force and the bending moment. An experimental investigation on the compressive behavior of eight short, confined, RC columns externally strengthened with steel angles and steel battens with various pitches was carried out, and has been utilized as support for the analytical model. …
