Measuring the shadow economy and its drivers: the case of peripheral EMU countries

2019

We adopt a long-run perspective to investigate the size of the shadow economy and explore the trends in this area. The analysis is based on a panel of peripheral EMU countries over the period 1965-2015. Our empirical approach relies on a multiple indicators and multiple causes (MIMIC) framework. This approach is a variant of structural equation modelling (SEM). We used two sets of variables, (i.e. potential determinants and indicator variables) to estimate an underlying (unobserved) index that measures the evolution of the shadow economy. Ascertaining the relative importance of the shadow economy enabled analysis of its relationship with other institutional and social issues (e.g. corruptio…

Atrial Fibrosis Hampers Non-invasive Localization of Atrial Ectopic Foci From Multi-Electrode Signals: A 3D Simulation Study

2018

[EN] Introduction: Focal atrial tachycardia is commonly treated by radio frequency ablation with an acceptable long-term success. Although the location of ectopic foci tends to appear in specific hot-spots, they can be located virtually in any atrial region. Multi-electrode surface ECG systems allow acquiring dense body surface potential maps (BSPM) for non-invasive therapy planning of cardiac arrhythmia. However, the activation of the atria could be affected by fibrosis and therefore biomarkers based on BSPM need to take these effects into account. We aim to analyze the effect of fibrosis on a BSPM derived index, and its potential application to predict the location of ectopic foci in the …

Accumuler le capital humain tout au long de la vie: Quels facteurs prédictifs de la participation à la formation permanente?

2003

This article addresses the main predictors of adult education, using statistical methods different from those generally used by social science researchers. Its aim is twofold. First, it seeks to explain in a simple and comprehensible manner the methodological value of these methods (in relation to the use of structural models); secondly, it demonstrates the concrete usefulness of these methods on the basis of a recent piece of research on the data from the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS).

Reciprocal regulation of the human sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP)-1a promoter by Sp1 and EGR-1 transcription factors.

2007

AbstractSterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP)-1a is a transcription factor that is highly expressed in actively growing cells, and is involved in the biosynthesis of cholesterol, fatty acids and phospholipids. We have mapped the minimal human SREBP-1a promoter region to 75bp upstream of the translation start site where we discovered a functional role for the 3 GC-boxes containing overlapping sites for the Sp1 and EGR-1 transcription factors. Intact SP1-binding sites are essential for promoter activity, whereas EGR-1 suppresses the transcription of the human SREBP-1a promoter. These results reveal a novel physiologically relevant transcriptional mechanism for the reciprocal regul…

Analysis and optimization against buckling of beams interacting with elastic foundation

2017

We consider an infinite continuous elastic beam that interacts with linearly elastic foundation and is under compression. The problem of the beam buckling is formulated and analyzed. Then the optimization of beam against buckling is investigated. As a design variable (control function) we take the parameters of cross-section distribution of the beam from the set of periodic functions and transform the original problem of optimization of infinite beam to the corresponding problem defined at the finite interval. All investigations are on the whole founded on the analytical variational approaches and the optimal solutions are studied as a function of problems parameters. peerReviewed

Vibrations of a continuous web on elastic supports

2017

We consider an infinite, homogenous linearly elastic beam resting on a system of linearly elastic supports, as an idealized model for a paper web in the middle of a cylinder-based dryer section. We obtain closed-form analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes. The frequencies increase as the support rigidity is increased. Each frequency is bounded from above by the solution with absolutely rigid supports, and from below by the solution in the limit of vanishing support rigidity. Thus in a real system, the natural frequencies will be lower than predicted by commonly used models with rigid supports. peerReviewed

Reliable measures of plastic deformations for elastic plastic structures in shakedown conditions

2020

A new formulation for evaluating reliable measures of the plastic deformations occurring in the transient phase of a structure in shakedown conditions is proposed. The structure is thought as constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material and subjected to a combination of fixed and cyclic loads. The proposed formulation consists in the search for the optimal plastic strain field that minimize a suitable objective function defining a strain energy measure related to the plastic strains at the shakedown limit. The typical self-stress field can be obtained as the elastic structural response to an assigned plastic strain field respecting appropriate ductility limits for the material. Without…

Performance Comparison of Electrical Motors equipped with slightly Asymmetrical Windings

2019

This paper presents a comparison between the performances of electrical machines equipped with slightly asymmetrical windings. More in detail, by modifying the stator geometry of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine equipped with a symmetrical winding configuration, other two slightly asymmetrical winding topologies are obtained. The three models are, then, analyzed by means of a finite element method (FEM) and the related results are compared in terms of cogging torque, static characteristics and leakage factor. The obtained results demonstrate that the adoption of slightly asymmetrical windings could be an interesting alternative solution during the design stage of electrical …

Magnetic and structural approach for understanding the electrochemical behavior of LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 positive electrode material

2013

Abstract A systematic study has been performed to investigate the structural and magnetic changes in LiNi 0.33 Mn 0.33 Co 0.33 O 2 , a member of the LiNi y Mn y Co 1–2 y O 2 series, upon chemical lithium deintercalation. Structural characterization of the chemically delithiated Li x Ni 0.33 Mn 0.33 Co 0.33 O 2 samples indicates that the initial rhombohedral symmetry (α-NaFeO 2 type structure) is maintained in the whole 0.3 ≤  x  ≤ 1.0 composition range. Less than 1% variation in the hexagonal unit cell volume was evidenced showing a good structural stability of this sample. SEM pictures of the delithiated phases confirm this stability. Indeed, the particle size average undergoes a small dec…

Bipolar electrolysis for tritium recovery from weakly active tritiated water

2001

Abstract Detritiation facilities produce low activity tritiated water from which tritium cannot be recovered. Bipolar electrolysis, based on the electrochemical permeation of hydrogen and its isotopes through Pd–Ag alloy membranes, allows tritiated water enrichment together with negligible gaseous tritium release. Our purpose is to enrich water from 500 Ci/l (1.85×1013 Bq/l) to more than 2000 Ci/l (7.40×1013 Bq/l). We first describe the principle of bipolar electrolysis and its application to isotopic enrichment. The experimental part of this work consists of the determination of the isotopic separation factors. From these experimental values, we simulated the working of an operational cell…
