A new series of layered magnets with the formula [M(L-tartrate)] (M = Mn(II), Co(II), Fe(II), Ni(II); L-tartrate = (2R,3R)-(+)-tartrate) has been prepared. All of these compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the chiral orthorhombic space group I222, as found by X-ray structure analysis. Their structure consists of a three-dimensional polymeric network in which each metal shows distorted octahedral coordination bound to four L-tartrate ligands, two of which chelate through an alcohol and a carboxylate group and the other two bind terminally through a monodentate carboxylate group. Rubberised bitumen manufacturing assisted by rheological measurements

This paper investigates the effect of processing temperature and time on the rheological proper- ties of recycled tyre rubber-modified bitumens (RTR-MBs) produced using two different base binders and an ambient ground crumb rubber modifier (CRM). The production of the RTR- MBs was accomplished by means of a standard Brookfield rotational viscometer together with a modified impeller, dual helical impeller, to allow mixing as well as real-time viscosity measurements of the produced RTR-MBs. Bio-based rigid high-density polyurethane foams as a structural thermal break material

Abstract Sustainable development of building industry implies increasing usage of green materials. With this aim and for the intended application as a structural thermal break material, rigid high-density polyurethane foams have been manufactured using polyols derived from renewable resources - tall oil fatty acids. Thermal conductivity, compressive strength and stiffness of the foams of density ranging from ca. 100 to 680 kg/m3 have been determined. Isostructural compartmentalized spin-crossover coordination polymers for gas confinement

[EN] Here we present two FeII coordination polymers that possess discrete compartments suitable for CO2 physisorption despite the lack of permanent channels. The two crystalline materials, of general formula [Fe(btzbp)3](X)2 (X = ClO4 or BF4), present voids of ca. 250 Å3, which each can accommodate up to two CO2 molecules. The abrupt spin transition can be modified upon CO2 sorption, and different magnetic behaviour is observed depending on the number of molecules sorbed.

Estimation of the elastic constants of highly porous cellular plastics reinforced with fibres embedded in foam struts

In order to enhance the mechanical properties of polymer foams, fillers of different materials and sizes are being applied. Fibrous fillers shorter than the characteristic foam cell dimensions have the potential of efficient reinforcement, due to their high aspect ratio, without detrimentally interfering with foam structure. A theoretical model is developed for evaluation of the effect of filler on foam stiffness. The elastic response of rigid polymer foams filled with short fibres, of length commensurable with that of foam struts, is modelled by using the orientational averaging technique. Penetrant diffusion in frozen polymer matrices: A finite-size scaling study of free volume percolation

The diffusion of penetrant particles in frozen polymer matrices is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model. By applying finite-size scaling to data obtained from very large systems it is demonstrated that the diffusion process takes place on a percolating free volume cluster describable by a correlated site percolation model which falls into the same universality class as random percolation. The diverging correlation length entails a pronounced dependence of the diffusion constant on the size of the simulated system. Fractional viscoelastic characterization of laminated glass beams under time-varying loading

Abstract Laminated glass is a composite made of elastic glass layers sandwiching thin viscoelastic polymeric interlayers. There are several types of polymers, traditionally modelled as linear viscoelastic materials using a Prony’s series of units in the Maxwell-Wiechert arrangement. We show that one single element with fractional viscoelastic properties (two constitutive parameters that depend on environmental temperature), is sufficient to provide an accurate description of the polymer response under arbitrary time-varying actions. Distribution of molecularly imprinted polymer layers on macroporous silica gel particles by STEM and EDX

Abstract Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in parallel and scanning mode (STEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) the distribution of molecularly imprinted polymer layers covalently grafted on the inner and outer surface of macroporous silica gel particles was observed. The grafting was achieved using a special initiator system ( iniferter ) and applied on a well known model system producing molecularly imprinted layers with l -phenyl alanine analide ( l -PA) as template. The influence of mechanical damaging on the lifetime of positrons In ultrahigh-molecular polyethylene

We study the influence of damaging of ultrahigh-molecular polyethylene [(PE-UHMW) Chirulen®1120] applied, among other materials, in the production of hip endoprostheses on the spectra of positrons lifetime in this material. Polyethylene samples were damaged by the impacts, rolling friction, and collisions with metal balls in a planetary mill. The changes in the parameters of the spectra of positrons lifetime related to the annihilation of orthopositronium (o-Ps) were analyzed depending on the mechanical energy transferred to the sample. Hydrothermal ageing of radiation cured epoxy resin-polyether sulfone blends as matrices for structural composites

Abstract The hydrothermal ageing of epoxy–thermoplastic blends, used as matrices for carbon fibre composites, cured by electron beam, has been studied. Two different thermoplastic percentages have been adopted. A suitable choice of both curing process and formulation parameters allows to carry out irradiation at mild temperature with several advantages, coming from a “non thermal” process, for both the final properties of the materials and the environment.
