Piezoelectric bimorph response with imperfect bonding conditions

2008

The effect of the finite stiffness bonding between the piezoelectric plies of bimorph devices has been investigated. A boundary integral formulation for piezoelasticity, based on a multidomain technique with imperfect interface conditions, has been developed. The imperfect interface conditions between the piezoelectric layers are described in terms of linear relations between the interface tractions, in normal and tangential directions, and the respective discontinuity in displacements. Continuity of the electric potential at the interface is also assumed and an iterative procedure is implemented to avoid interface interference. Numerical analysis has been performed on bimorph configuration…

Droplet digital PCR as a tool for investigating dynamics of cryptic symbionts

2021

Abstract Interactions among symbiotic organisms and their hosts are major drivers of ecological and evolutionary processes. Monitoring the infection patterns among natural populations and identifying factors affecting these interactions are critical for understanding symbiont–host relationships. However, many of these interactions remain understudied since the knowledge about the symbiont species is lacking, which hinders the development of appropriate tools. In this study, we developed a digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) assay based on apicomplexan COX1 gene to detect an undescribed agamococcidian symbiont. We show that the method gives precise and reproducible results and enables detecting cryp…

Cultivating a ‘Digital Jungle’ : Toward a Hybrid Governance Perspective on Infrastructure Evolution

2020

Digital infrastructures (DIs) evolve rather than following planned development trajectories. We know this phenomenon as drift, that is, infrastructures drift from management control. Infrastructure drift has motivated research into infrastructure governance recognizing two governance approaches: top-down and bottom-up. Yet, what happens if an organization engaging in its digital transformation expands its DI following top-down governance while simultaneously introducing elements of bottomup governance? We study how an industrial manufacturer expanded its DI for collaboration top-down while also giving employees leeway for bottom-up governance. As a result, it found that its digital collabor…

Dynamic Refolding of Ion-Pair Catalysts in Response to Different Anions.

2019

Four distinct folding patterns were identified in two foldamer-type urea-thiourea catalysts bearing a basic dimethylamino unit by a combination of X-ray crystallography, solution NMR studies, and computational studies (DFT). These patterns are characterized by different intramolecular hydrogen bonding schemes that arise largely from different thiourea conformers. The free base forms of the catalysts are characterized by folds where the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the urea and the thiourea units remain intact. In contrast, the catalytically relevant salt forms of the catalyst, where the catalyst forms an ion pair with the substrate or substrate analogues, appear in two entirely dif…

Hexagonal nanosheets from the exfoliation of Ni2+-Fe3+ LDHs: a route towards layered multifunctional materials

2010

Here we report the synthesis of a crystalline micrometric-sized hexagonal-shaped Ni2+-Fe3+ LDH by following a modified homogeneous precipitation method. The exfoliation of the material in formamide leads to stable suspensions of hexagonal nanometric sheets, which have been extensively characterized. Our data confirm that the intrinsic properties of the bulk material are retained by these segregated nanosheets, thus opening the door for their use in the development of layered multifunctional materials.

Porous clays heterostructures as supports of iron oxide for environmental catalysis

2018

[EN] Porous Clays Heterostructures (PCH) from natural pillared clays (bentonite with a high proportion of montmorillonite) have been used as supports of iron oxide for two reactions of environmental interest: i) the elimination of toluene (a representative compound of one of the most toxic subsets of volatile organic compounds, aromatics) by total oxidation and ii) the selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur. For both reactions these catalysts have resulted to be remarkably more efficient than similar catalysts prepared using conventional silica as a support. Thus, in the total oxidation of toluene it has been observed that the catalytic activity obtained using siliceous PCH is two o…

Irradiation Effects in Optical Fibers

2010

Intrinsic and extrinsic optical fiber-based sensors are promising devices to be used in very different and complex environments, by their very nature: capabilities to work under electromagnetic fields; possibility to carry multiplexed signals (time, wavelength multiplexing); small size and low mass; ability to handle multi-parameter measurements in distributed configuration; possibility to monitor sites far away from the controller. In the case of the optical fibers, the possibility to be incorporated into various types of sensors and actuators, free of additional hazards (i.e. fire, explosion), made them promising candidates to operate in adverse conditions as those required by space appli…

MONENSIN ENHANCES DIGOXIN-INDUCED ARRHYTHMIAS IN GUINEA-PIGS

1993

Effects of pretreatment with monensin (150 ug/kg), atenolol (0.3 mg/kg), atenolol plus monensin, verapamil (0.38 mg/kg), verapamil plus monensin, glibenclamide(0.38 mg/kg) and glibenclamide plus monensin on the dose of digoxin required to induce premature ventricular contractions (PVCS) in anaesthetized guinea-pigs were studied. Monensin reduced while atenolol increased the dose of digoxin required to produce PVCS. Atenolol plus monensin increased the dose of digoxin required to produce PVCS in presence of monensin alone. Verapamil reduces the arrhythmogenic effect of monensin on digoxin. Glibenclamide antagonises the effect of monensin on digoxin induced PVCS. From the present data it coul…
