Si analizzano opere d’arte, anche inedite, legate alla committenza francescana dell’alto Belice corleonese e della Valle del Sosio pubblicando documenti emersi nel corso della ricerca We analyze works of art, also unpublished, related to the Franciscan patronage of the Upper Belice Corleonese and the Sosio Valley by publishing documents that emerged during the research.

Giacomo Serpotta (1656-1732) was a brilliant and highly skilled master of the sculptural art of stucco throughout Europe. He was born in poverty in Palermo, and his father was imprisoned shortly after he was born. The canonical critic and historian Antonio Mongitore praised him for his work and for his confident and almost frantic style of drawing, and for his considerable dilicatezza (sensitivity). In questo lavoro viene presentato il restauro della statua in stucco rappresentante l’allegoria della Penitenza di scuola Serpottesca. L’opera si trova nella chiesa di Santa Ninfa dei Crociferi a Palermo e fiancheggia l’altare della cappella della Madonna della Salute insieme all’allegoria della Giustizia. L’opera non è autografa, nulli sono gli atti che ne documentano con certezza l’identità, ma è inequivocabile la sua appartenenza alla scuola dei Serpotta, la più importante bottega di maestri stuccatori del barocco siciliano, il cui massimo esponente è stato Giacomo. The article describes the innovative restoration of a decorative figured stucco, attributed to Giacomo Serpotta or to his family, with winged putti and a female figure sitting on a triumphal chariot. The work, in the past at the former Museo Nazionale and today at the Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Abatellis, can be dated between the late seventeenth century and the beginning of eighteenth century and is a testimony of the Baroque in Palermo.
