Educational Migration Trends Review in Poland (with Particular Emphasis on the Immigration of Ukrainian Youth)
2023
This article aims to review and synthesise research on educational migration in Poland, particularly youth immigration from Ukraine. The paper collects statistical data from 2004, which allowed for the analysis of the existing trends in educational migration in Poland. The research on the largest group of foreign students – citizens of Ukraine – was reviewed, which resulted in identifying research gaps regarding student mobility in Poland, both in terms of demand and supply of educational migrations. The practical implication appears to show that the governments of the host countries, the business sector, and the academic units – due to the increase in the number of foreign students – can e…
Augstākās izglītības internacionalizācija: Monaša Universitātes un Latvijas Universitātes salīdzinošā analīze
2018
This thesis seeks to аddress how University of Lаtviа аnd Monаsh University cаn successfully cooperаte in а wаy thаt increаses exchаnge student number, enhаnces productivity аnd sаtisfаction (effectiveness). Previous reseаrch demonstrаted thаt the lаndscаpe of work is quickly being shаped аnd defined by new study methods, new knowledge economy`s requirements, new societаl vаlues, chаnging demogrаphics, аnd rаpid globаlisаtion. Therefore, trаditionаl exchаnge progrаmmes such аs Erаsmus, Erаsmus+, аnd Erаsmus Mundus, which hаve been the mаin focus for University of Lаtviа аccording to its Strаtegy Plаn 2010-2020, do limit the exchаnge of students within the frаmework of Europeаn Union аnd sho…
Intra-regional mobility of PhD students in the European Union : the outcomes of region-making policy?
2022
This paper examines the flow of intra-European Union (EU) students for doctoral (PhD) studies to identify reasons for differences in international student mobility and migration (ISM) among member states. Rather than conceptualising intra-EU PhD student ISM only through push–pull forces, we theorise the intra-EU PhD ISM is associated with relative levels of national resources or levels of capital. We investigate the intra-EU PhD ISM through dyadic country pairings allowing the use of Gravity models to estimate the effect of variables associated with stocks of capital ascribed to a country to the change in the number of PhD students. The findings of this study indicate while there is asymmet…
Pull factors for university students’ mobility: a gravity model approach
2020
Migration phenomena are characterised by flows that are typically multilateral. Often an outgoing flow corresponds to one or more incoming flows, which counterbalances it. When the balance is negative, socio-economic problems can arise. Italy has been afflicted for years by a particular type of unilateral migration: student mobility. Thousands of students leave the South to study in the Centre-North, driven by the better socio-economic conditions of those areas, and by more prosperous job prospects. Since this flow is not followed by a return one, nor by other incoming flows, the historical, socio-economic gap between North and South is widened. Taking advantage of the big dataset concernin…
Internationalisation in higher education: A comparative view of cross-border type 1 & 2 education and their impact on developing and developed countr…
2014
COMMUNITY DETECTION IN TRIPARTITE NETWORKS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENT MOBILITY FLOWS
2021
The purpose of this study is to explore how the multimode network approach can be used to analyse network patterns derived from student mobility flows. We define a tripartite network based on a three-mode data structure, consisting of Italian provinces of residence, universities and fields of study, with student exchanges representing the links between them. A comparison of algorithms for detecting communities from tripartite networks based on modularity optimization is provided, revealing relevant information about the phenomenon under analysis over time. The findings are applied to a real dataset containing micro-level longitudinal information on Italian university students’ careers.
Student mobility in higher education: Sicilian outflow network and chain migrations
2019
The most important student mobility (SM) flow in Italy is from the Southern to the Central-Northern regions, a phenomenon that has been magnified by an increasing number of outgoing students from Sicily over the last decade. In this paper, we rely upon micro-data of university enrollment and students' personal records for three cohorts of freshmen, in order to investigate preferential patterns of SM from Sicily toward universities in other regions. Our main goal is to reveal the existence of chain migrations, where students from a particular geographical area move towards a particular destination to follow other students that have previously moved. The paper provides aspects that are innova…
Latvijas universitāšu starptautiskā sadarbība: studentu mobilitātes motivācijas izpēte
2018
Maģistra darba autore Eva Kazāka izstrādāja darbu, kura temats ir, “Latvijas universitāšu starptautiskā sadarbība: studentu mobilitātes motivācijas izpēte”. Maģistra darba mērķis ir izpētīt faktorus, kuri ietekmē studentu motivāciju piedalīties starptautiskajā studiju mobilitātē un izstrādāt priekšlikumus Latvijas universitātēm, lai veicinātu aktīvāku studentu mobilitāšu īstenošanu starptautiskās sadarbības pilnveidošanai. Maģistra darba teorētiskajā daļā tiek izzināts starptautiskās sadarbības jēdziens, jomas, veidi un specifika augstākās izglītības telpā, noskaidrots motivācijas jēdziens, veidi, to ietekmējošie faktori un studentu motivācija starptautiskajā sadarbībā, kā arī raksturots st…
