The aim of the study is to explore situational, cultural and pragmatic factors that might trigger code-switching during informal conversations outside of the classroom at school among bilingual adolescents in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. An attempt is made to clarify different functions of code-switching, i.e. why bilingual adolescents code-switch from Swedish to Finnish and vice versa. The conversational data, consisting of video-recorded group and pair conversations, was collected in 2014–2015 at six junior high schools in Haparanda, Helsinki and Stockholm. Swedish has two tone accents, accents 1 and 2. There are approximately 350 minimal pairs such as ánd-en (duck) and ànde-n (spirit) differentiated only by tone accent. As all stressed words in Swedish have a tone accent, tones are important for achieving nativelike pronunciation. However, this is a challenging task for L2 speakers. In Swedish, the tone accents are potentially difficult both acoustically (cf. phonetic realization) and lexically (cf. morphological distribution). Combining Sequence Analysis and Hidden Markov Models in the Analysis of Complex Life Sequence Data

Life course data often consists of multiple parallel sequences, one for each life domain of interest. Multichannel sequence analysis has been used for computing pairwise dissimilarities and finding clusters in this type of multichannel (or multidimensional) sequence data. Describing and visualizing such data is, however, often challenging. We propose an approach for compressing, interpreting, and visualizing the information within multichannel sequences by finding (1) groups of similar trajectories and (2) similar phases within trajectories belonging to the same group. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli ottaa selvää, mitä mieltä ruotsin opiskelijat ovat kieliharjoittelusta, joka on pakollinen osa ruotsin aineopintoja. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin, mitkä seikat vaikuttavat kieliharjoittelutavan valintaan, millaista hyötyä opiskelijat kokevat saaneensa kieliharjoittelusta ja kuinka positiiviseksi opiskelijat arvioivat harjoittelun kokemuksena. Lisäksi tutkittiin opiskelijoiden kielitaidon kehitystä itsearviointien avulla sekä opiskelijoiden mielipiteitä harjoittelun tavoitteiden toteutumisesta. Tutkimukseen osallistui 19 henkilöä. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kohdekielisessä maassa tapahtuvan opiskelijavaihdon vaikutuksia ruotsin ja saksan opiskelijoiden ääntämiseen, eli muuttuuko ääntäminen ja millaisia mahdolliset muutokset ovat. Tutkimukseen osallistui neljä ruotsin ja neljä saksan opiskelijaa, jotka olivat opiskelijavaihdossa yhden lukukauden ajan Ruotsissa tai Saksassa. Tutkimusmateriaali koostuu luetusta puheesta, joka kerättiin ennen ja jälkeen opiskelijavaihdon. Nauhoitukset tehtiin kielistudiossa ja molemmilla kerroilla käytettiin samoja tekstejä, jotta foneettisten aineistojen vertailu onnistuisi. Beyond “liberals” and “conservatives”: Complexity in ideology, moral intuitions, and worldview among Swedish voters

This research investigated the congruence between the ideologies of political parties and the ideological preferences (N = 1515), moral intuitions (N = 1048), and political values and worldviews (N = 1345) of diverse samples of Swedish adults who voted or intended to vote for the parties. Logistic regression analyses yielded support for a series of hypotheses about variations in ideology beyond the left-right division.
