Heterogeneity of volatile sources along the Halmahera arc, Indonesia

Owing to the comparative remoteness of the region, few ground-based studies of the volcanoes have been undertaken. Here, we report and integrate gas measurements and (isotope) geochemical analyses of lava samples for Dukono, Ibu, Gamkonora, Gamalama, and Makian volcanoes of the Halmahera arc. The Hercynian orogenic belt of Europe consists of a central crystalline ridge which is accompanied on both sides by a rather unmetamorphosed foldbelt. It is speculated that the crystalline ridge represents some kind of island arc system underlain by a segment of continental crust. On both sides this island arc system was involved in subduction of oceanic crust, first of the Mideuropean Sea in the North and then of the Paleotethys in the South. A new hydrous Al-bearing pyroxene as a water carrier in subduction zones

Abstract A new Hydrous Al-bearing PYroxene (HAPY) phase has been synthesized at 5.4 GPa, 720 °C in the MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O model system. It has the composition Mg2.1Al0.9(OH)2Al0.9Si1.1O6, a C-centered monoclinic cell with a = 9.8827(2), b = 11.6254(2) c = 5.0828(1) A and β = 111.07(1)°. The calculated density is 3.175 g/cm3 and the water content is 6.9% H2O by weight. Its structure has been solved in space group C2/c by the recently developed automated electron diffraction tomography method and refined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The plutonic complex of the Meissen massif (northern margin of the Bohemian massif) comprises dioritic to mainly monzonitic and granitic rocks. The diorite to monzonite intrusions show major and trace element patterns typical for shoshonitic series. The chemical signatures of less crustally contaminated diorites are similar to arc-related shoshonitic rocks derived from continental lithospheric mantle (CLM) sources previously enriched by subduction of altered oceanic crust. Early exhumation of high-pressure rocks in extrusion wedges: Cycladic blueschist unit in the eastern Aegean, Greece, and Turkey

Structural, metamorphic, and geochronologic work shows that the Ampelos/Dilek nappe of the Cycladic blueschist unit in the eastern Aegean constitutes a wedge of high-pressure rocks extruded during early stages of orogeny. The extrusion wedge formed during the incipient collision of the Anatolian microcontinent with Eurasia when subduction and deep underthrusting ceased and the Ampelos/Dilek nappe was thrust southward over the greenschist-facies Menderes nappes along its lower tectonic contact, the Cycladic-Menderes thrust, effectively cutting out a ∼30- to 40-km-thick section of crust. Taiwan is widely considered to be a typical example of an arc-continent collision surrounded by two opposite dipping subduction zones. The manner by which the interaction of the two neighboring slabs caused plate collision and mountain building is insufficiently understood. Abstract The Late Bronze Age (LBA) tsunami and the A.D. 365 tsunami are supposed to have affected the northern coasts of Crete. However, near-coast sedimentary archives have been rarely investigated in this area, and sedimentary archives including palaeotsunami fingerprints are still unknown.
