2018
Lexical encapsulation consists of a series of abstract unspecific nouns (fact, plan...) referring to predicative antecedents. This study is based on a corpus of parliamentary debate in English, Catalan and Spanish (PD) and deals with encapsulation as a complex lexical cohesion device which allows the addressor to evaluate the information of the debates in various ways. Our work tries to highlight the role of lexical encapsulation to reflect the addressor’s positioning with respect to the topic discussed, and to establish whether there are outstanding cross-linguistic differences. In order to delimit the diverse evaluative strategies, an approach from the perspective of prototype theory is a…

Freedom, Civility and Activeness. On the government of leisure self-formation of Finnish multicultural youth
2012
This article explores the leisure time and civic activities of ‘multicultural youth’ in Finland. The theoretic-conceptual framework is the Foucauldian governmentality approach and Foucault's four step model of the ethical self-formation of the moral subject. This toolkit exposes how the subjectivation of the multicultural youth takes place in their leisure time activities and civic action, and connects and disconnects with the desires and expectations of administration and youth workers. The leisure time subjectivation of the youth implements on the interface of their own ‘self-driven’ activities and interests and more or less programmatic governance of official youth work with its integrat…

«I am Serban, a Romanian who does not belong to anybody, I belong to my- self». Subjugation and subjectification practices between Sardinian she- pherds and Romanian servant shepherds The article investigates the role of the Romanian paid worker in the Sardinian countryside that replaces the traditional figure of the local «servo pastore» (Sardinian servant shepherd). The focus is on the symbolic and relational ten- sion between Sardinian shepherds and Romanian salaried workers, starting from extensive ethnographic material based on participant observation and in-depth interviews. By analyzing their work practices and daily interactions as well as what the Sardinians said about the Romanian…

“I Like to Keep my Archaeology Dead”. Alienation and Othering of the Past as an Ethical Problem
2019
As archaeologists, we have to deal with the dead, and as David Clarke once said, we like to keep our archaeology dead. From an epistemological perspective, alienation from the dead seems almost inevitable; otherwise, we would only project today’s conditions onto the past. Therefore, the past must be, and must remain, a foreign country. These alienating processes have ethical implications, however, especially when it comes to the study of human remains. In this article, we analyze the structures within the scientific discipline of archaeology that normalize practices, such as the labeling of human bone material during excavations and the object-like display of skeletons in museums. We argue …
