Increased bioavailability of oral melatonin after fluvoxamine coadministration*1

2000

Background Fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is known to elevate melatonin serum concentrations. It has not been clear whether these effects might be attributed to an increased melatonin production or to an decreased elimination of melatonin. The latter hypothesis was tested by this study. Methods Five healthy male volunteers (one CYP2D6 poor metabolizer) received 5 mg melatonin either with or without coadministration of 50 mg fluvoxamine. Serum concentrations of melatonin and fluvoxamine were assessed from 0 to 28 hours after melatonin intake. Results Coadministration of fluvoxamine, on average, led to an 17-fold higher (P <.05) area under concentration–time curve (AUC…

Angiotensin II is involved in nitric oxide synthase and cyclo-oxygenase inhibition-induced leukocyte-endothelialcell interactionsin vivo

2001

Chronic inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) provokes a hypertensive state which has been shown to be angiotensin II (Ang-II) dependent. In addition to raising blood pressure, NOS inhibition also causes leukocyte adhesion. The present study was designed to define the role of Ang-II in hypertension and in the leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions induced by acute NOS or cyclo-oxygenase (COX) inhibition using intravital microscopy within the rat mesenteric microcirculation. While pretreatment with an Ang-II AT1 receptor antagonist (losartan) reversed the prompt increase in mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) caused by indomethacin, it had no effect on the increase evoked by systemic L-…

Nebennieren undrenale Oxytocin-Wirkungen bei der Ratte

1959

No significant improvement in water diuresis was obtained by the s. c. injection of 500–1000 mU/kg of a synthetic oxytocin preparation (Syntocinon) in adrenalectomized, salt-maintained rats given 18 ml of water per rat by stomach tube. In these animals oxytocin had, on the other hand, a strong natriuretic and chloruretic effect.

Growth hormone protects human lymphocytes from irradiation-induced cell death

2003

1. Undesired effects of cancer radiotherapy mainly affect the hematopoietic system. Growth hormone (GH) participates in both hematopoiesis and modulation of the immune response. We report both r-hGH cell death prevention and restoration of secretory capacities of irradiated human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) in vitro. 2. r-hGH induced cell survival and increased proliferation of irradiated cells. Western blot analysis indicated that these effects of GH were paralleled by increased expression of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. 3. r-hGH restored mitogen-stimulated release of IL-2 by PBL. Preincubation of irradiated lymphocytes with the growth hormone receptor (GHR) antagonists B2036 an…

Synthesis of nitric oxide in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus mediates the inhibition of gastric acid secretion by central bombesin

1999

1. Central administration of bombesin inhibits gastric acid production independently of the centrally or peripherally-acting stimuli employed. This study evaluates the role and location of the cerebral nitric oxide (NO) implicated in the inhibitory effect of central bombesin on in vivo rat gastric acid secretion, as induced by distension with 15 cm H2O, insulin (0.75 u.i. kg-1 i.p.) TRH (1.2 microg kg-1, i.c.) or pentagastrin (100 microg kg-1, i.p.). 2. The acid-inhibitory effect of i.c. bombesin (40 ng kg-1) was prevented by prior administration of L-NAME (80 microg kg-1) in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMN). This dose of L-NAME when administered into the nucleus of the tractus s…

Variations of plas14a benin activity and aldostehone levels in the rat after administration of saline, chrystalloid and colloid solutions

1976

Abstract The data reported in the present paper refer to quantitative variations of plasma renin activity (PRA.) and of plasma aldosterone levels in rats after adiministration of saline, chrystalloid and colloid solutions. In our experimental conditions PRA and plasma aldosterone levels were shown to increase significantly after administration of distilled water and glucose solution. Variations of PRA and plasma aldosterone levels were only slight when plasma volume was made to increase due to administration of polyvinylpirrolidone solution. PRA, instead, was significantly lower in rats having received saline salution.

Long term outcomes of pharmacological treatments for opioid dependence: does methadone still lead the pack?

2014

The aim of this review was to update and summarize the scientific knowledge on the long term outcomes of the different pharmacological treatment options for opioid dependence currently available and to provide a critical discussion on the different treatment options based on these results. We performed a literature search using the PubMed databases and the reference lists of the identified articles. Data from research show that the three pharmacological options reviewed are effective treatments for opioid dependence with positive long term outcomes. However, each one has its specific target population and setting. While methadone and buprenorphine are first line options, heroin-assisted tre…

Phase Transitions in Li, K and Ag Modified Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-SrTiO3-PbTiO3Solid Solutions

2012

Influence of moderate substitution of Na by monovalent metals Li, K and Ag on structure, phase transitions and dielectric properties of 0.4Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3-0.4SrTiO3-0.2PbTiO3 is studied. Substitution by Li increases, while substitution by K and Ag decreases tetragonality of unit cell. Li increases, Ag decreases while K weakly influences phase transition temperature. The characteristic for the parent phase relaxor state with Tt approaching Tm in case of substitution by K and Li transfers into diffused phase transition without Tm dependence on frequency and extended region of thermal hysteresis.

On Formalizing Logical Modalities

2021

This paper is in the scope of the philosophy of modal logic; more precisely, it concerns the semantics of modal logic, when the modal elements are interpreted as logical modalities. Most authors have thought that the logic for logical modality—that is, the one to be used to formalize the notion of logical truth (and other related notions)—is to be found among logical systems in which modalities are allowed to be iterated. This has raised the problem of the adequacy, to that formalization purpose, of some modal schemes, such as S4 and S5 . It has been argued that the acceptance of S5 leads to non-normal modal systems, in which the uniform substitution rule fails. The thesis supported in this…
