Millennial-scale terrestrial ecosystem responses to Upper Pleistocene climatic changes: 4D-reconstruction of the Schwalbenberg Loess-Palaeosol-Sequen…

2021

Abstract Loess-Palaeosol-Sequences (LPS) in the Central European region provide outstanding terrestrial polygenetic and multiphase archives responding to past climate and environments over various spatial and temporal scales. As yet, however, the geomorphological and pedogenic processes involved in LPS formation, and their interplay with changes in ecological conditions, impede robust correlation with other palaeoenvironmental archives. The Schwalbenberg LPS, which drape a hillslope in the Middle Rhine Valley in western Central Europe, provide unique high-resolution records highly suitable for investigating the processes involved in their formation and the relationship to climatic influence…

Importance of seeds in the process of common ragweed invasion

2012

International audience; Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. (common ragweed) was introduced into Europe at the end of the 1900s and is now present in several European countries. This annual invasive plant produces seeds that are highly polymorphic. Common ragweed can produce only a few thousand highly viable seeds. Many studies have focused on the seed stage. Greater seedling emergence for the seeds placed near the soil surface could explain the success of this species in open habitats, where the probability of deeper burial is low. Emergence percentage was found to decrease as burial depth increased from 2 to 8 cm, and no germination nor seedling emergence was observed for the seeds buried from 10-…

The access and success in the different higher education tracks in France for female and male youths of North-African origin?

2014

International audience; In France, the baccalauréat is the key diploma to enter higher education and today nearly half of the youths from immigrant families have such a diploma. What kind of educational outcomes can they expect in higher education? Our presentation will focus on the access to and the completion of higher education according to ethnic origin, social background and gender.

'Immunogenetics of Aging': report on the activities of the 15th International HLA and Immunogenetics Working Group and 15th International HLA and Imm…

2011

'Immunogenetics of Aging' is a component that was first included in the 14th International HLA and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIWS) and developed further within the 15th Workshop. The aim of this component was to assess the impact of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes, cytokine genes, and some innate immunity genes such as killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and mannose-binding lectin 2 (MBL2) in successful aging and their contribution to the better understanding of immune dysfunction in old age. Within the 15th IHIWS new populations were included in the analysis. Additional cytokine gene polymorphisms were assessed and innate immunity genes were analyzed for possible relevance…

Reduction in site fidelity with smaller spatial scale may suggest scale-dependent information use

2014

Animals change the strategy that they use to select breeding sites at the spatial scales of habitat, patch, and microhabitat. In this regard, breeding site fidelity is expected to vary according to environmental predictability, which, in turn, is expected to differ between each spatial scale. However, whether or not animals change their degree of site fidelity at different spatial scales remains unclear. We captured and released males of the terrestrial frog Pseudophryne bibronii into alternative patches within a breeding habitat and determined the extent to which site fidelity influenced individual nest-site choice. We found that males tended to return to their original patch rather than r…
