Does periodization work? Athletes perform better in major events than in minor competitions

Previous studies on periodization have led to the view that most athletes fail to peak at major events. These conclusions might be based on definitions of “peak performance” that are too narrow. In this study, a track and field athlete was defined as succeeding in a competition if their outcome was within the acceptable range from the best result of the season. The data are from seven championship finals and semifinals together with 42 Diamond League competitions from the 2010s, altogether 7,087 individual results. The aim of this study was to find out the potential of the Minoritest to identify the most likely talented gymnasts to join the national team pre-training group in Finland. The study examined the relationships between gymnasts´ (N=215, age 10–13) Minoritest results (2006–2010) and success in competitions after the Minoritests until the end of 2016. The competition results were also compared between the gymnasts who had participated in the test and a random number (N=180) of gymnasts who had not. Muotoilun arvoa on mitattu yleensä lopputulosta ja ulkoisia hyötyjä arvioiden. Se, miten muotoilija itse määrittelee työnsä tavoitteet, on jäänyt vähäisemmälle huomiolle. Tässä tutkielmassa esitetään mittauskehikko muotoilijoiden omalle työlleen asettamien tavoitteiden mittaamista, kuvailua, vertailua ja toimialan kehityksen seurantaa varten. Abstract The so-called Carnot Sandstones, Mesozoic fluvio-lacustrine detrital formation, which stretch over an area of more than 40 000 km 2 in the western part of the Central African Republic, are made of a succession of conglomerates, sandstones and argilites which can reach 300 m in thickness. Heavy mineral analyses and quartz exoscopic studies of this detrital material allow to understand the geology of these formations. The detrital material origin: heavy mineral distribution in the lower levels indicates mostly a meridional origin with a quantitatively poor peripheral supply.
