Adolescents’ and mothers’ temperament types and their roles in early adolescents’ socioemotional functioning

The present study examined adolescents’ and mothers’ temperament types and their roles in the socioemotional functioning of early adolescents. A total of 869 sixth-grade students and 668 mothers participated in the study. The students rated their temperament and socioemotional functioning and the mothers rated their own temperament. Latent profile analyses identified four temperament types among the adolescents (resilient, reserved, average, and mixed) and three types among the mothers (resilient, average, and mixed). Abstract This chapter compares music listening with the infant’s experience of care. Several scholars have argued that music can be used for scaffolding one’s self-experience. Developmental psychologists, in turn, maintain a wide consensus over the claim that, in early interaction, the attuned caregiver supports and modifies the infant’s self-experience in various ways. The chapter brings these phenomena together, illustrating how the examination of the early self/other relation can teach us something important concerning the listener/music relation. This thesis examined the engagement of students at lower secondary schools in Finland. Two independent cross-sectional data sets collected in 2010 (N = 821) and 2013 (N = 2485) were analyzed using both variable-centered and personcentered methods. The thesis analyzed the associations between teacher– student relationships, family support for students’ learning, peer support at school, control and relevance of school work, students’ future aspirations and goals, school burnout, behavior at school, and truancy from school. The present thesis focuses on patterns of educational dialogue, their quality with respect to forms of teacher scaffolding and shared knowledge building, and the association between the quality of educational dialogue and students’ academic performance. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkin lasten runotulkintoja suomalaisesta lastenrunoudesta ja niissä kuvaillusta luonnosta. Tutkimuksessani vaikuttaa niin kirjallisuudentutkimuksellinen kuin lapsuudentutkimuksellinen näkökulma: tutkimusaihe sijoittuu kirjallisuudentutkimuksen kentälle, kun taas tutkimukseni tavoite antaa ääni yhteiskunnassamme usein hiljennetyille lapsille noudattaa lapsuudentutkimuksen ideologiaa. Tutkimukseni metodologiset valinnat pohjaavat lapsinäkökulmaisen tutkimuksen periaatteeseen, jonka mukaan lapset tuottavat ja rakentavat tietoa kulttuurissamme. Teoreettinen pro gradu -tutkielmani käsittelee Tuuli Hirvilammen ja Tuula Helneen relationaalisen hyvinvoinnin teoriaa, joka korostaa ihmisen ja luonnon riippuvaisuussuhteen merkitystä ihmisen hyvinvoinnille. Vertaan tätä teoriaa varhaisen kriittisen koulukunnan ja eritoten Valistuksen dialektiikan käsityksiin ihmisen ja luonnon suhteesta.
