The effectiveness of leadership development in the military context from a gender viewpoint

In this case study, leadership development is investigated from the viewpoint of women in a military context. In particular, the effectiveness of a leadership development program in a specific context, namely the Finnish Defence Forces, is explored. The program being studied is unique because it is concerned with developing volunteers, not professional soldiers. A longitudinal, interview-based study of the topic was conducted with women who had participated in the program. The data consists of 45 open-ended interviews with 15 women. Masculinity in flux? : Male managers navigating between work and family

The article sheds light on male managers’ experience as fathers in a post-Soviet context in Lithuania. This empirical study of 12 male managers’ experiences of work-family integration (WFI), their ways of coping with negative experiences, and the role of organizations in reducing conflict and enriching WFI, reveal the emergence of a new paternal identity: fathers who perceive their role as caregivers but for whom this is still subordinate to the dominant role of the breadwinner. Relying on their wife is a man’s dominant coping strategy. Organizations are perceived as family unfriendly. The term ‘sex roles’ encapsulates male–female differences in mate searching, competitive traits that increase mating/fertilization opportunities, choosiness about mates and parental care. Theoretical models suggest that biased sex ratios drive the evolution of sex roles. To model sex role evolution, it is essential to note that in most sexually reproducing species (haplodiploid insects are an exception), each offspring has one father and one mother. Tutkielmassani tarkastelen sitä, millaisia merkityksiä koulupuvun käytöllä on ollut niitä käyttävien yksilöiden elämässä, miten koulupuku on heidän mielestään vaikuttanut heidän asemaansa osana yhteisöä sekä millaisia uudenlaisia merkityksiä japanilainen koulupuku on saanut. Pukeutumista tutkimalla on mahdollista tutkia monia erilaisia kulttuuriin kuuluvia piirteitä, ja olen halunnut työssäni tuoda esille sen, mitä koulupuvun käyttäminen ja siihen liitetyt merkitykset kertovat japanilaisesta kulttuurista. Tutkielmani käsittelee seksuaalisen ja sukupuolisen identiteetin muodostumista kulttuurisilla areenoilla. Painotan seksuaalisuuden ja sukupuolisuuden konstruktiivista ja poliittista puolta essentialistisen ja biologisen ymmärryksen vastaisesti. Seksuaalisuuden diskursiivisen ulottuvuuden pohdinnassa käyn läpi seksuaalisuuden käsitteellistä historiaa sekä hyödynnän Michel Foucault’n teoretisointia vallan kyllästämästä ruumiista. Tässä maisterintutkielmassa kiinnostuksen kohteina olivat mainosmusiikin herättämät feminiinisyyden ja maskuliinisuuden merkitykset televisiomainosten yhteydessä. Mainonta ja mainosmusiikki ovat vahvasti läsnä 2010-luvun ihmisten arjessa, ja siksi niillä on myös merkittävä rooli sukupuolikäsitysten rakentajina. Radical sex role ideology and the Finnish gender role movement in the late 1960s

An active discussion of gender roles and the need to renegotiate them took place in the late 1960s in Finland. While previous studies have associated this ‘sex role debate’ with the independent civic organisation Association 9, this article focuses on the wider gender role movement. The article analyses the interplay and differences among the Finnish Women’s Democratic League, the Committee for Women’s Status, and Association 9’s grassroots activism between 1965 and 1970.
