Environmental impact of mining activities on the Hermioni area, Greece
1993
Publisher Summary This chapter investigates the environmental impact of mining activities in the Hermioni area, Greece, including the offshore area. A chemical analysis of sediments associated with diabase lavas in the Hermioni mine area has shown significant enrichments in Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and As relative to normal pelagic clays. Marked geographic compositional variations within the Hermioni area have been observed, the highest metal enrichments found at Baroutospelia. Mineralogically the Fe–Mn sediments contain hematite, quartz, and minor amounts of illite, smectites, and feldspars. A chemical analysis of sulfide ore samples showed that the Hermioni ores are Cu-rich pyrites, always contain…
Mechanism of the Oxidation of Sulfides by Dioxiranes. 1. Intermediacy of a 10-S-4 Hypervalent Sulfur Adduct
2002
Earlier studies established that dimethyldioxirane (1a) reacts with sulfides 2 in two consecutive concerted electrophilic oxygen-transfer steps to give first sulfoxides 3 and then sulfones 4. The same sequential electrophilic oxidation model was assumed for the reaction of sulfides 2 with the strongly electrophilic methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (1b). In this paper we report on a systematic and general study on the mechanism of the reaction of simple sulfides 2 with DMDO (1a) and TFDO (1b) which provides clear evidence for the involvement of hypervalent sulfur species in the oxidation process. In the oxidation of sulfides 2a-c, diphenyl sulfide (2d), para-substituted aryl methyl sulfides …
Oxidation of Sulfides with a Silica-Supported Peracid in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide under Flow Conditions: Tuning Chemoselectivity with Pressure
2010
Supercritical carbon dioxide is a convenient medium for performing the selective oxidation of sulfides 1 to either sulfoxides 2 or sulfones 3 with [2-percarboxyethyl]-functionalized silica (4) under flow conditions. The chemoselectivity of the reaction, which results from the different diffusion rates of sulfide and sulfoxide over the reagent bed, can be controlled by adjusting the pressure and the hydration of the silica surface as both the solvating power of the mobile phase and the surface activity of the stationary phase determine the migration rates of sulfide 1 and sulfoxide 2 over the supported peroxide. The results elucidate the impact of surface phenomena on the course of chemical …
Heterogeneous oxidation of pyrimidine and alkyl thioethers in ionic liquids over mesoporous Ti or Ti/Ge catalysts.
2004
Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of a series of thioethers (2-thiomethylpyrimidine, 2-thiomethyl-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine, 2-thiobenzylpyrimidine, 2-thiobenzyl-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, thioanisole, and n-heptyl methyl sulfide) was performed in ionic liquids by using MCM-41 and UVM-type mesoporous catalysts containing Ti, or Ti and Ge. A range of triflate, tetrafluoroborate, trifluoroacetate, lactate and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide-based ionic liquids were used. The oxidations were carried out by using anhydrous hydrogen peroxide or the urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct and showed that ionic liquids are very effective solvents, achieving greater reactivity and selectivity than reactions p…

SO3 is a vigorous initiator of the cationic polymerization …

[21] Assay of blood glutathione oxidation during physical exercise
1995
Publisher Summary This chapter describes a method to accurately measure glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) in the blood of humans and animals that perform physical exercise. With this method, it is possible to assess the oxidative stress associated with physical exercise by measuring changes in the blood GSH/GSSG ratio. Glutathione measurement is performed by a modification of the glutathione S -transferase method of Brigelius et al. This is based on the conjugation of chlorodinitrobenzene with GSH catalyzed by glutathione S -transferase. The adduct formed, S-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)glutathione, exhibits a maximum of absorbance at 340 nm. The precipitation of proteins is carried …
A study of the atmospherically important reactions of dimethylsulfide (DMS) with I2 and ICl using infrared matrix isolation spectroscopy and electron…
2012
The reactions of dimethylsulfide (DMS) with molecular iodine (I(2)) and iodine monochloride (ICl) have been studied by infrared matrix isolation spectroscopy by co-condensation of the reagents in an inert gas matrix. Molecular adducts of DMS + I(2) and DMS + ICl have also been prepared using standard synthetic methods. The vapour above each of these adducts trapped in an inert gas matrix gave the same infrared spectrum as that recorded for the corresponding co-condensation reaction. In each case, the infrared spectrum has been interpreted in terms of a van der Waals adduct, DMS : I(2) and DMS : ICl, with the aid of infrared spectra computed for their minimum energy structures at the MP2 lev…
