Ultraviolet radiation at Mediterranean latitudes and protection efficacy of intraocular lenses.
2011
Summary Purpose After determining the mean intensity of ultraviolet radiation to which the human eye is exposed at Mediterranean latitudes, this data is used to evaluate the efficacy of the ultraviolet filters incorporated into various intraocular lenses. Methods Ultraviolet radiation measured at Mediterranean latitudes was used as a reference for the theoretical calculation of the amount of radiation to which the human eye is exposed. The spectral transmission curve from 290 to 380 nm was measured for 10 IOLs using a UV/VIS Perkins-Elmer Lambda 800 spectrometer. Results At Mediterranean latitudes, at sea level, with a mean annual solar irradiation of 50 j/cm 2 , the human eye receives a qu…
ADAHELI+: Exploring the fast, dynamic Sun in the X-ray, optical, and near-infrared
2015
Advanced Astronomy for Heliophysics Plus (ADAHELI+) is a project concept for a small solar and space weather mission with a budget compatible with an European Space Agency (ESA) S-class mission, including launch, and a fast development cycle. ADAHELI+ was submitted to the European Space Agency by a European-wide consortium of solar physics research institutes in response to the "Call for a small mission opportunity for a launch in 2017," of March 9, 2012. The ADAHELI+ project builds on the heritage of the former ADAHELI mission, which had successfully completed its phase-A study under the Italian Space Agency 2007 Small Mission Programme, thus proving the soundness and feasibility of its in…

Columnar aerosol properties in Valencia (Spain) by ground-based Sun photometry
2007
In this paper, we present a climatological study of atmospheric aerosols in coastal eastern Spain, by means of experimental measurements using a Cimel CE318-2 Sun photometer. The aerosol optical depth, Ångström wavelength exponent, size distribution, complex refractive index, asymmetry parameter, and single scattering albedo have been retrieved from these measurements. The columnar water content, as an important parameter for understanding aerosol growth, has also been retrieved. Statistical results of the annual and seasonal variability analysis, mainly related to the usual summer maximum turbidity found in the Mediterranean and European regions, are also shown. The results are linked to t…
Metafizikas un kosmoloģijas aspekti Šao Jun skaitļu filozofijā
2015
Experimental Verification of the Determination of Atmospheric Turbidity from Sunshine Recorders
1984
Abstract The feasibility of determining atmospheric turbidity from the burned traces of Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorders during cloudless sunsets and sunrises is examined experimentally. Results show that atmospheric turbidity can be determined in this way and can provide data for climatological research over the period of existing sunshine records. However, the measurements show a substantial uncertainty in the results if the properties of the used record cards are unknown. For networks of recorders, the method remains useful despite these limitations.
Performance of a FieldSpec spectroradiometer for aerosol optical depth retrieval: method and preliminary results
2009
The performance of a FieldSpec spectroradiometer for retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been assessed after modifying its basic configuration in order to measure direct solar irradiance at ground level. The FieldSpec measurements were obtained during four summertime days in the years 2004 and 2005, over a Spanish agricultural site in Barrax, Albacete (30 degrees 3(') N, 2 degrees 6(') W, 700 m a.s.l.), in the framework of two European Space Agency mission remote sensing field campaigns. From the whole FieldSpec spectral domain (350-2500 nm) the AOD was extracted for channels within atmospheric windows. The instrument was calibrated by means of the standard Langley plot method, perfo…
Estimation of daily average values of the Ångström turbidity coefficient β using a Corrected Yang Hybrid Model
2013
This paper aims to test a method for estimating daily values of atmospheric turbidity from non-specialized data, such as those obtained from agro-meteorological stations. This method allows estimating the spatial and temporal evolution of aerosols concentration in more places than just those in which direct measurements are available. The method is based on the Corrected Yang Hybrid Model (CYHM). The data used in the determination of errors between measured and estimated values of the daily Angstrom turbidity coefficient β were recorded in Valencia, Spain, during 2009 and 2011. These data were global solar irradiance, direct solar irradiance, temperature, relative humidity and Aerosol Optic…
Bioprospecting the solar panel microbiome: High-throughput screening for antioxidant bacteria in a caenorhabditis elegansModel
2018
Microbial communities that are exposed to sunlight typically share a series of adaptations to deal with the radiation they are exposed to, including efficient DNA repair systems, pigment production and protection against oxidative stress, which makes these environments good candidates for the search of novel antioxidant microorganisms. In this research project, we isolated potential antioxidant pigmented bacteria from a dry and highly-irradiated extreme environment: solar panels. High-throughput in vivo assays using Caenorhabditis elegans as an experimental model demonstrated the high antioxidant and ultraviolet-protection properties of these bacterial isolates that proved to be rich in car…
Detection of Fusarium Species in Clinical Specimens by Probe-Based Real-Time PCR
2019
The mold Fusarium is a ubiquitous fungus causing plant, animal and human infections. In humans, Fusarium spp. are the major cause of eye infections in patients wearing contact lenses or after local trauma. Systemic infections by Fusarium spp. mainly occur in immunosuppressed patients and can disseminate throughout the human body. Due to high levels of resistance to antifungals a fast identification of the causative agent is an urgent need. By using a probe-based real-time PCR assay specific for the genus Fusarium we analysed several different clinical specimens detecting Fusarium spp. commonly found in clinical samples in Germany. Also, a large collection of lung fluid samples of haematolog…
