Sujuvaa mutta viron kielen vaikutusta : yleisten kielitutkintojen arvioijien käsityksiä vironkielisten suomenoppijoiden suullisesta taidosta
2020
Artikkelissa tarkastellaan Yleisten kielitutkintojen (Yki) arvioijien (N = 44) käsityksiä vironkielisten suomenoppijoiden suullisesta kielitaidosta. Lisäksi artikkelissa kuvataan, mistä oppijoiden ensikieli tunnistetaan ja kuinka tunnistaminen vaikuttaa käsityksiin kielitaidosta. Näkökulma kielitaitokäsityksiin perustuu kontekstuaaliseen käsitystutkimukseen. Artikkeli on osa Suomen Akatemian Rikkinäistä suomea – Aksenttien arviointi yhteiskunnallisena portinvartijana -tutkimushanketta, jossa tarkastellaan viiden ensikielen kautta vieraan aksentin vaikutusta suomen kielen taidosta annettaviin arvioihin. Tässä artikkelissa keskitytään vironkielisiin oppijoihin (N = 10), joiden puhesuoritu…
Microstructural evaluation and recommendations for face masks in community use to reduce the transmission of respiratory infectious diseases

“Hopefully nähdään” : North American Finnish language learners building community through virtual conversation hours
2020
In the Finnish Studies Programs at two North-American universities, Finnish language students have collaborated online and participated in informal virtual conversational coffee hour meetings. These meetings are offered to complement students’ collaboration conducted during regular language classes. This article investigates what students talk about when they meet each other virtually and how they build a shared sense of community during these meetings. nonPeerReviewed
Virtual Museum and Small Museums : ViMuseo.fi Project
2011
New media are a huge opportunity and challenge for museums, especially for small institutions without digitized resources. The ViMuseo.fi is a research project conducted at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The research focuses on the possibilities of new media in presenting cultural heritage in small Finnish museums. As a part of the research, a tool to present small museums on the Web was developed. The ViMuseo tool is a CMS for creating multimedia presentations, and was designed specifically for small institutions without digitized resources. The possible deployment of the tool is also discussed. peerReviewed
Toimijuus korkeakoulutettujen suomen oppijoiden visuaalisissa narratiiveissa
2018
This socioculturally informed study explores how highly educated Finnish language learners represent their agency in visual narratives. Learners (n=59) were asked to draw two pictures of themselves as Finnish language users and provide verbal interpretations of the drawings. The aim of using visual narratives is to reach aspects such as feelings and beliefs which might be difficult to express verbally. The data were analyzed first by using visual grammar set out by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) and secondly by content analysis. The findings suggest that learners saw Finnish language as a tool for oral communication. However, difficulties with speaking and listening appeared to restrict learn…

Visuaaliset resurssit suomi toisena kielenä -oppitunneilla : multimodaalinen näkökulma
2013
Electrophysiological evidence supports the role of sustained visuospatial attention in maintaining visual WM contents
2019
Recent empirical and theoretical work suggests that there is a close relationship between visual working memory (WM) and visuospatial attention. Here, we investigated whether visuospatial attention was involved in maintaining object representations in visual WM. To this end, the alpha lateralization and contralateral delay activity (CDA) were analyzed as neural markers for visuospatial attention and visual WM storage, respectively. In the single-task condition, participants performed a grating change-detection task. To probe the role of visuospatial attention in maintaining WM contents, two color squares were presented above and below the fixation point during the retention interval, which …
