Nonadiabatic dynamics in strongly driven diffusive Josephson junctions

2019

By measuring the Josephson emission of a diffusive Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor (SNS) junction at a finite temperature we reveal a non-trivial sensitivity of the supercurrent to microwave irradiation. We demonstrate that the harmonic content of the current-phase relation is modified due to the energy redistribution of quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagnetic field. The distortion originates from the phase-dependent out-of-equilibrium distribution function which is strongly affected by the ac-response of the spectral supercurrent. For phases close to $\pi$, transitions accross the Andreev gap are dynamically favored leading to a supercurrent reduction. T…

Fermi condensates for dynamic imaging of electromagnetic fields.

2008

Ultracold gases provide micrometer size atomic samples whose sensitivity to external fields may be exploited in sensor applications. Bose-Einstein condensates of atomic gases have been demonstrated to perform excellently as magnetic field sensors \cite{Wildermuth2005a} in atom chip \cite{Folman2002a,Fortagh2007a} experiments. As such, they offer a combination of resolution and sensitivity presently unattainable by other methods \cite{Wildermuth2006a}. Here we propose that condensates of Fermionic atoms can be used for non-invasive sensing of time-dependent and static magnetic and electric fields, by utilizing the tunable energy gap in the excitation spectrum as a frequency filter. Perturbat…

First operation of the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator as an energy recovery linac

2020

The superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator (S-DALINAC) has been operated as an energy recovery linac (ERL) for the first time. The S-DALINAC is a recirculating superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerator and had been upgraded with an additional recirculation beamline. It features a path length adjustment system that provides a freedom of choice of 360\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for the rf phase difference between the electron bunches recirculated through the new beamline and the phase of the accelerating ${\mathrm{TM}}_{010}$ mode of the oscillating electromagnetic field in the SRF cavities of the accelerator. A choice of around 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree…

Tin-related double acceptors in gallium selenide single crystals

1998

Gallium selenide single crystals doped with different amounts of tin are studied through resistivity and Hall effect measurements in the temperature range from 30 to 700 K. At low doping concentration tin is shown to behave as a double acceptor impurity in gallium selenide with ionization energies of 155 and 310 meV. At higher doping concentration tin also introduces deep donor levels, but the material remains p-type in the whole studied range of tin doping concentrations. The deep character of donors in gallium selenide is discussed by comparison of its conduction band structure to that of indium selenide under pressure. The double acceptor center is proposed to be a tin atom in interlayer…

Transport properties of nitrogen doped p‐gallium selenide single crystals

1996

Nitrogen doped gallium selenide single crystals are studied through Hall effect and photoluminescence measurements in the temperature ranges from 150 to 700 K and from 30 to 45 K, respectively. The doping effect of nitrogen is established and room temperature resistivities as low as 20 Ω cm are measured. The temperature dependence of the hole concentration can be explained through a single acceptor‐single donor model, the acceptor ionization energy being 210 meV, with a very low compensation rate. The high quality of nitrogen doped GaSe single crystals is confirmed by photoluminescence spectra exhibiting only exciton related peaks. Two phonon scattering mechanisms must be considered in orde…

The composite operator method route to the 2D Hubbard model and the cuprates

2018

In this review paper, we illustrate a possible route to obtain a reliable solution of the 2D Hubbard model and an explanation for some of the unconventional behaviours of underdoped high-$T_\text{c}$ cuprate superconductors within the framework of the composite operator method. The latter is described exhaustively in its fundamental philosophy, various ingredients and robust machinery to clarify the reasons behind its successful applications to many diverse strongly correlated systems, controversial phenomenologies and puzzling materials.

Quantum mechanics-molecular dynamics approach to the interpretation of x-ray absorption spectra.

2009

The quantum mechanics-molecular dynamics approach to the simulation of configuration-averaged EXAFS spectra is proposed, and its application is discussed for the example of the Ti K-edge EXAFS spectrum in cubic perovskite SrTiO(3). Proper use of ab initio quantum mechanics allows a number of empirical parameters, used in the molecular dynamics simulation, to be reduced, whereas the molecular dynamics allows us to account for temperature effects. All together, the approach provides a way of accounting for static and dynamic disorder in EXAFS signals from the coordination shells above the first one, where many-atom (multiple-scattering) effects are often important.

Supervised Quantum Learning without Measurements

2017

We propose a quantum machine learning algorithm for efficiently solving a class of problems encoded in quantum controlled unitary operations. The central physical mechanism of the protocol is the iteration of a quantum time-delayed equation that introduces feedback in the dynamics and eliminates the necessity of intermediate measurements. The performance of the quantum algorithm is analyzed by comparing the results obtained in numerical simulations with the outcome of classical machine learning methods for the same problem. The use of time-delayed equations enhances the toolbox of the field of quantum machine learning, which may enable unprecedented applications in quantum technologies. The…

Strongly interacting Fermi gases with density imbalance

2005

We consider density-imbalanced Fermi gases of atoms in the strongly interacting, i.e. unitarity, regime. The Bogoliubov-deGennes equations for a trapped superfluid are solved. They take into account the finite size of the system, as well as give rise to both phase separation and FFLO type oscillations in the order parameter. We show how radio-frequency spectroscopy reflects the phase separation, and can provide direct evidence of the FFLO-type oscillations via observing the nodes of the order parameter.
