A physical interpretation of the jet-like X-ray emission from supernova remnant W49B

In the framework of the study of supernova remnants and their complex interaction with the interstellar medium and the circumstellar material, we focus on the galactic supernova remnant W49B. Its morphology exhibits an X-ray bright elongated nebula, terminated on its eastern end by a sharp perpendicular structure aligned with the radio shell. The X-ray spectrum of W49B is characterized by strong K emission lines from Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. There is a variation of the temperature in the remnant with the highest temperature found in the eastern side and the lowest one in the western side. Shock–cloud interactions in the Vela SNR: preliminary results of an XMM-Newton observation

Abstract The study of the clumpy and irregular features in the X-ray emission of middle-aged supernova remnants shells allows us to shed light on the various characteristic of the interstellar medium, like its structure and composition. We have observed with XMM-Newton a small knot in the Vela SNR, which previous ROSAT studies have indicated as one of the best examples of an interaction between the SNR shock and an isolated cloud. We present preliminary results of this study. A tale of two GRB-SNe at a common redshift of z=0.54

We present ground-based and HST optical observations of the optical transients (OTs) of long-duration Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) 060729 and 090618, both at a redshift of z = 0.54. For GRB 060729, bumps are seen in the optical light curves (LCs), and the late-time broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the OT resemble those of local type Ic supernovae (SNe). For GRB 090618, the dense sampling of our optical observations has allowed us to detect well-defined bumps in the optical LCs, as well as a change in colour, that are indicative of light coming from a core-collapse SN. High-Resolution Radio Observations of Supernova SN1986J

We present high-resolution observations of the supernova SN1986J in the galaxy NGC891 at the frequency of 5 GHz, more than 15 years after its explosion. The image shows a highly distorted shell of radio emission, suggesting that the shock front has been strongly deformed. The brightness distribution within the shell is also highly asymmetric, and we propose that such asymmetry could be due to the collision of the supernova ejecta with an anisotropic, clumpy medium. The average speed of the shell has decreased from about 7400 km s−1 in 1988.74 down to ~ 6300 km s−1 in 1999.14, pointing to a mild deceleration in the expansion of SN 1986J. The MEGA Project for Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

The Medium Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy (MEGA) telescope concept will soon be proposed as a MIDEX mission. This mission would enable a sensitive all-sky survey of the medium-energy gamma-ray sky (0.4–50 MeV) and bridge the huge sensitivity gap between the COMPTEL and OSSE experiments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the visionary Advanced Compton Telescope (ACT) mission. The scientific goals include compiling a much larger catalog of sources in this energy range, performing far deeper searches for supernovae, better measuring the galactic continuum and line emissions, and identifying the components of the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray emission. Dips in the diffuse supernova neutrino background

Scalar (fermion) dark matter with mass in the MeV range coupled to ordinary neutrinos and another fermion (scalar) is motivated by scenarios that establish a link between radiatively generated neutrino masses and the dark matter relic density. With such a coupling, cosmic supernova neutrinos, on their way to us, could resonantly interact with the background dark matter particles, giving rise to a dip in their redshift-integrated spectra. Current and future neutrino detectors, such as Super-Kamiokande, LENA and Hyper-Kamiokande, could be able to detect this distortion.
Bepposax: 3 Years of Operation

BeppoSAX, the X-Ray Astronomy satellite operating in the (0.1–300) keY energy band has now lived more than 30.000 hours in orbit and it is halfway to complete the 3rd round of observations (A03 started at the beginning of may 1999 and it will end in April 2000). A report is given on the general fields covered by the mission and on the more relevant results obtained. The satellite is in excellent operating conditions and it is foreseen to continue the observational life-time well beyond the initially scheduled 3 years.
15 years of very long baseline interferometry observations of two compact radio sources in Messier 82

We present the results of a second epoch of 18cm global Very Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations, taken on 23 February 2001, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations further investigate the structural and flux evolution of the most compact radio sources in the central region of M82. The two most compact radio objects in M82 have been investigated (41.95+575 and 43.31+592). Using this recent epoch of data in comparison with our previous global VLBI observations and two earlier epochs of European VLBI Network observations we measure expansion velocities in the range of 1500-2000km/s for 41.95+575, and 9000-11000km/s for 43.31+592 usi…
Expansion of SN 1993J: New λλ6 and 13 cm images

Abstract Radio supernovae are rare events among supernovae, usually taking place in distant galaxies. In recent years, great progress has been made in the study of radio supernovae with high angular resolution, due to advances in the VLBI technique and to the lucky occurrence of the powerful supernova SN 1993J in M81 only 3.6 Mpc distant. Its spatial structure has been unveiled and its expansion rate determined at 3.6 cm. Here we present new preliminary VLBI results on the expansion of this supernova at 6 and 13 cm. We resolve the shell at both wavelengths. The size estimates at 6 cm indicate a lower expansion rate than previously estimated. This may be the first evidence of deceleration.
Confusing Head-On Collisions with Precessing Intermediate-Mass Binary Black Hole Mergers

We report a degeneracy between the gravitational-wave signals from quasi-circular precessing black-hole mergers and those from extremely eccentric mergers, namely head-on collisions. Performing model selection on numerically simulated signals of head-on collisions using models for quasi-circular binaries we find that, for signal-to-noise ratios of 15 and 25, typical of Advanced LIGO observations, head-on mergers with respective total masses of $M\in (125,300)M_\odot$ and $M\in (200,440)M_\odot$ would be identified as precessing quasi-circular intermediate-mass black hole binaries, located at a much larger distance.
