The estimation of velocity profile in turbulent open channels is a difficult task due to the significant effects of the secondary flow. The present paper investigates the mechanism of the velocity-dip phenomenon, whereby the location of the maximum velocity appears to be below the free surface. Previous studies conducted in straight channels relate the mechanism of the velocity-dip phenomenon to secondary flow induced by anisotropy of turbulence. The 'power' of tourism in Portugal

The author analyses the upper tail of the distribution of tourism supply in Portugal from 2002 to 2009, using data from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística database. Tourism supply is defined in terms of the lodging capacity of hotel establishments in about 250 tourist destinations. The paper shows that the empirical distribution of tourism supply in Portugal is heavy-tailed and consistent with a power law behaviour in its upper tail. Such behaviour seems to be stable over the years, provided that, for the time horizon covered by the data sets, the scaling parameter is always close to the value of two. In this paper, we want to discuss the complexity of the mechanisms of medieval building stone supplying based on a diachronically and multidisciplinary inquiry on several Cistercian and ducal study cases. The first results enlighten the constraint caused by land property that limits the builders to a supplying network shaped by domain and law. Thanks to the growing vitality of trade and the arrival of independent stone providers, criteria of selection gradually focus on stone itself. Both global and individual strategies evolve then, reinventing the networks of stone providing and the markets.
