Designed for unanticipated use

2003

Common artefacts have been identified as fundamental characteristics for framing activities in workplaces. Mike Robinson's article 'Design for unanticipated use...' conceptualised and defined the dimensions of common artefacts as consisting of predictability, peripheral awareness, implicit communication, double level language and overview. These dimensions have often been used in explaining unexpected uses of different applications and systems. In this paper, experiences from common artefacts as CSCW application design principles, indicating that unanticipated uses are expected and further supported, are discussed. Two distinct cases, a physical room and a software application, are presente…

BIOCHARS IN SOILS: TOWARDS THE REQUIRED LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING

2017

The special issue on Biochar as an Option for Sustainable Resource Management Key priorities in biochar research for future guidance of sustainable policy development have been identified by expert assessment within the COST Action TD1107. The current level of scientific understanding (LOSU) regarding the consequences of biochar application to soil were explored. Five broad thematic areas of biochar research were addressed: soil biodiversity and ecotoxicology, soil organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil physical properties, nutrient cycles and crop production, and soil remediation. The highest future research priorities regarding biochar’s effects in soils were: functional …

Comparing data mining and deterministic pedology to assess the frequency of WRB reference soil groups in the legend of small scale maps

2015

Abstract The assessment of class frequency in soil map legends is affected by uncertainty, especially at small scales where generalization is greater. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that data mining techniques provide better estimation of class frequency than traditional deterministic pedology in a national soil map. In the 1:5,000,000 map of Italian soil regions, the soil classes are the WRB reference soil groups (RSGs). Different data mining techniques, namely neural networks, random forests, boosted tree, classification and regression tree, and supported vector machine (SVM), were tested and the last one gave the best RSG predictions using selected auxiliary variables a…

Thiazolium-based catalysts for the etherification reaction of benzylic alcohols under solvent-free condition

2015

Thiazolium and imidazolium hybrid materials were prepared by radical reactions between a mercaptopropyl-modified SBA-15 mesoporous silica and bis-vinylthiazolium or bis-vinylimidazolium dibromide salts. These hybrid materials were characterized by several techniques and were employed in the etherification reaction of 1-phenylethanol. Solvent-free conditions at 160C under different gas phases (oxygen, air, nitrogen and argon) were used. The thiazolium-based material displayed excellent performances. Further studies were carried out using unsupported thiazolium salts, with or without a methyl group at the C-2 position of the thiazolium moiety. These studies allowed us to propose a reaction me…

Gesture Recognition for Improved User Experience in a Smart Environment

2013

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a new paradigm that specifically aims at exploiting sensory and context information in order to adapt the environment to the user's preferences; one of its key features is the attempt to consider common devices as an integral part of the system in order to support users in carrying out their everyday life activities without affecting their normal behavior. Our proposal consists in the definition of a gesture recognition module allowing users to interact as naturally as possible with the actuators available in a smart office, by controlling their operation mode and by querying them about their current state. To this end, readings obtained from a state-of-the-art…

La costruzione tian (tun) + infinito nel dialetto tedesco di Merano*

2012

This article deals with the 'do-support' phenomenon in the German Tyrolean dialect spoken in Merano/Meran (Northern Italy). We show that it is used in various contexts, which do not correspond to the contexts in which English resorts to do-support. In some of these contexts the do-support is obligatory, while in others it is optional.

Measurement Invariance of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Among Chinese and South Asian Ethnic Minority Adolescents in Hong Ko…

2020

Seven hundred adolescents (Chinese = 50%; South Asian ethnic minority = 50%) with mean age of 15.3 years (SD = 1.53). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess measurement invariance of the MSPSS scale across Chinese and South Asian ethnic minority samples. Results show that the original three-factor structure of the MSPSS was supported in both samples. Measurement invariance was supported in terms of configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance. Given partial scalar invariance was achieved, the latent mean differences were compared across samples. Chinese adolescents had higher levels of all three types of social support when compared with their South Asian ethni…

Spatial [Elements] Decision Support System Used in Disaster Management

2007

Natural disasters profoundly affect the development of human society, they are the most pervasive disasters in the world and they cause the greatest property and human loss. Considering the natural disasters that have struck Romania these years, we believe that is it is absolutely necessary to develop a spatial [elements] decision support system, which would prevent - as much as possible - natural disasters from occurring or would help mitigate their effects. All these objectives are unattainable without effectively applying information and communication technology in the field of natural disasters.

Do coaching style and game circumstances predict athletes' perceived justice of their coach? A longitudinal study in elite handball and volleyball te…

2018

Objective: The present longitudinal study is the first to examine game to game fluctuations of perceived justice of elite volleyball and handball coaches. More specifically, we studied whether coaching style (i.e., need support versus control), coach behaviors (decision justifications), player’s status (i.e., starter or substitute), and game result (win/loss) predicted athletes’ perceived justice and its fluctuations. Methods: A longitudinal questionnaire study was performed during 6 consecutive weeks among Belgian female volleyball (N = 57) and male handball players (N = 39). We administered a general questionnaire (i.e., need support/control) the first week, and game-specific questionnair…
