Non-invasive localization of atrial ectopic beats by using simulated body surface P-wave integral maps

2017

Non-invasive localization of continuous atrial ectopic beats remains a cornerstone for the treatment of atrial arrhythmias. The lack of accurate tools to guide electrophysiologists leads to an increase in the recurrence rate of ablation procedures. Existing approaches are based on the analysis of the P-waves main characteristics and the forward body surface potential maps (BSPMs) or on the inverse estimation of the electric activity of the heart from those BSPMs. These methods have not provided an efficient and systematic tool to localize ectopic triggers. In this work, we propose the use of machine learning techniques to spatially cluster and classify ectopic atrial foci into clearly diffe…

Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia detection from surface ECG using time-frequency representation images as input dataset for machine learning

2017

Parameter-less ventricular fibrillation detection with time-frequency representation.Time-frequency representations are treated as images for a classifier.A comparison for four classifiers demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. The proposed technique could be applied to any signal and research field. This is a novel approach to signal analysis. Background and objectiveTo safely select the proper therapy for Ventricullar Fibrillation (VF) is essential to distinct it correctly from Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) and other rhythms. Provided that the required therapy would not be the same, an erroneous detection might lead to serious injuries to the patient or even cause Ventricular Fibr…

The effects of children’s reading skills and interest on teacher perceptions of children’s skills and individualized support

2015

This study examined the effects of children’s reading skills and interest in reading-related tasks on teacher perceptions of children’s literacy skills (reading and spelling) and the respective individualized support for children during the first two years of formal schooling. The participants were 334 children and their classroom teachers. Identical measures were administered at three time points (at the beginning of Grade 1 and at the end of Grades 1 and 2). Children’s reading skills were assessed with the word reading fluency test, and their interest in reading was assessed with self-reports. Also, teachers evaluated each child’s level of reading and spelling skills and reported the lev…

Conceptualizing Collaboration in the Context of Computer-supported Collaborative Learning

2015

“Collaborative learning” has become a common expression in a wide range of spheres. We often say that we learn collaboratively when we perform a task together. However, the term “collaborative learning” has more complex implications than only doing a task together with peers. Successful collaborative learning is characterized by meaningful and intense interactions among peers and shared understanding of the concepts. In computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) learners’ interactions are mediated by technological artifacts, therefore, the role of technologies becomes highly important from both cognitive and motivational perspectives. In this paper I discuss the essence of c…

Collaborative Learning and Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Environments

2008

A focus on purely individual cognition has set a stage to social construction of knowledge. New learning environments, in many cases supported by computer technology, are often based on collaborating and sharing expertise. As a result research on Computer Supported Collaborative learning (CSCL) environments is a significant and growing field, which actively seeks new methods to resolve the challenges of human learning across diverse levels of interaction in a modern information society. In this chapter we will discuss the concept of collaborative learning and the issues involved in using information and communication technology to support collaborative learning. We begin with the definition…

Urban Planning and Technological Innovation

2017

Over the years, city and territory have been transformed disproportionately and the planning appears to have lost control over the dynamics of the events that, unfortunately, have caused indelible changes on urban and environmental systems. The reworking of alphanumeric and geographic data through the territorial information system can be useful as technical support and methodological knowledge capable of intervening and redeveloping the residential centers. In fact, cities and their dynamics can be visualized with tools and machinery capable of representing them in a graphic or schematic way. This study presents some Italian experiences of urban renewal made possible by territorial informa…

Women in technology-oriented fields

2015

This study focuses on investigating the main elements that have an effect on women’s decisions to enter a career in technology-oriented fields, and more specifically, to discover whether studying crafts, especially technical work, during basic education affects their decisions in this context. The study was carried out using a semi-structured questionnaire, and the data consist of the responses from 12 female technology education teachers and 12 female engineering students. A qualitative theory oriented content analysis was carried out through identifying, coding, analysing and reporting the patterns within the data. The findings revealed that the most influential career anchor identified b…

Market scope of vendors in the OSS software market

2007

This paper studies the market scope of vendors that produce software for telecommunications operators, i.e. the Operations Support Systems (OSS) market. The aim is to find out the strategies used by vendors in the OSS market. The market scope is studied on two dimensions: 1) the breadth of the scope in the OSS market; and 2) focus on the telecommunications industry. The breadth of market scope is divided into four categories: niche, vertical, layer and broad scope. We examine empirical vendor data from the years 2002 and 2005. Results show that all hypothesized strategies are present in the market. Most of the firms have either a niche, a vertical or a broad market scope, and they are speci…
