Communicator styles of hospital patients during nurse-patient counseling.

2002

Abstract This article describes nurse–patient communication during counseling sessions. It focuses on the patient as a participant in a discussion and aims at a description of patients’ communicator styles, which were observed on videotape based on 38 counseling sessions transcribed word by word. Interviews of the participating nurses and patients were used for partial support of the interpretations. The analytic method chosen was typology, and it has been used for achieving a multifaceted qualitative description of patient communication. The research material yielded seven types of communicator styles: Quietly Assenting, Emotionally Expressive, Storyteller, Stoic Observer, Inquisitive of D…

The Political Click: Political Participation through E-Petitions in Germany

2010

Electronic petitions can serve as an influential mechanism for political participation. We present a study on the dynamics in the German e-petition system which was introduced in late 2008. Drawing on a data set of signatures, we analyze four aspects: (a) the types of petitions found, (b) the temporal dynamics of petitions, (c) the types of users found, and (d) the intersection of different petitions' supporter populations. We present evidence that (a) the system is dominated by a very small number of high-volume petitions and (b) these high-volume petitions have a delayed boosting effect on the base activity in the petition system. We furthermore (c) present a typology of users, showing th…

The impact of healthy lifestyles on academic achievement among Italian adolescents

2021

AbstractWe evaluated the association between healthy lifestyles and academic achievement in a sample of 373 adolescent Italian students. Specifically, we investigated on the association between use of illegal drugs, habits to practice a regular physical, typology of diet, levels of social support, levels of self-esteem, level of Internet use, perceived stress and amount of sleep and academic achievement. Academic performance was positively correlated with good diet, perceived social support, and self-esteem. A statistically significant difference emerged between students with high versus low correct grade point averages in relation to lifetime and current use of illegal drugs. Last, academi…

Carnaval y música: una breve semblanza de la Tuna Compostelana de 1888

2021

At the end of the 19th century, Spanish carnivals have been marked by the participation of the different tunas or also known as, estudiantinas. These groups achieved significant relevance in Galicia, especially in the city of Compostela, which, year after year, encouraged and supported the formation of groups of this nature to liven up the carnivals in the different Spanish cities. Although, different from its predecessors, the Santiago Tuna of 1888 ventured and made its mark in history, thanks to its intrepidity in having been the first Galician group that crossed the borders and enlivened the carnivals in the cities of the neighboring country, Portugal. This research, approached from a hi…

Family, social support and delinquent behavior in adolescence: direct and mediating effects

2005

Marital conflict, parental support, and school adjustment in adolescents

2006

Solutions to replace quantity with quality in science.

2012

In their recent letter, Joern Fischer and others [1xAcademia's obsession with quantity. Fischer, J. et al. Trends Ecol. Evol. 2012; 27: 463–474See all References[1] tackled one of the major problems in modern science: the obsession with quantity. Perspicaciously, they showed how targeting for quantity has faded out creativity and reflection from science. Fischer and others ended their letter with the words: ‘Starting with our own university departments (but not stopping there), it is time to take stock of what we are doing. We must recreate spaces for reflection, personal relationships, and depth. More does not equal better.’ Utopian as it may be, we applaud this statement.Unfortunately, Fi…

The difficulties of adapting university teaching for students with disabilities: an analysis focussed on inclusive guidance

2012

The need for specific attention for the personal, social, academic and professional development of students with disabilities is a challenge that the university is committed to. Although significant progress has been made, promoted by an inclusive educational approach, there are still many difficulties faced by students to intergrate into university education. To advance a deeper understanding of the issues affecting these students, research has been conducted with a sample of 113 students with disabilities from different centers in the University of La Laguna (Spain). The results have highlighted, the lack of guidance and information regarding access to university courses, the need to impl…

Bot recognition in a Web store: An approach based on unsupervised learning

2020

Abstract Web traffic on e-business sites is increasingly dominated by artificial agents (Web bots) which pose a threat to the website security, privacy, and performance. To develop efficient bot detection methods and discover reliable e-customer behavioural patterns, the accurate separation of traffic generated by legitimate users and Web bots is necessary. This paper proposes a machine learning solution to the problem of bot and human session classification, with a specific application to e-commerce. The approach studied in this work explores the use of unsupervised learning (k-means and Graded Possibilistic c-Means), followed by supervised labelling of clusters, a generative learning stra…
