Loneliness Mediates the Relationship Between Early Life Stress and Perceived Stress but not Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis Functioning
2021
Many authors have proposed that early life stress (ELS) provokes a dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and contributes negatively to the management of stress in adulthood. However, these associations have not always been observed, making it necessary to include new factors that could explain the different results found. In this regard, people with ELS experiences report less social support during adulthood, suggesting that loneliness could be a mediating factor. Thus, our aims were to investigate whether ELS was related to both perceived stress and diurnal HPA axis activity, and whether loneliness mediates these relationships, in a community sample (N=187, 18–55ye…
Progress towards sustainable agriculture – Drivers of change
2021
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 calls for global action to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture”. Meeting this challenge requires global partnerships to support more productive, nutritious and equitable food systems, while helping to conserve environmental resources and reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions responsible for global climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) offers a global vision for a more sustainable agriculture that encompasses economic, social and environmental dimensions of food and agriculture systems. This technical study examines the key factors driving changes in…
Social support and well-being of refugees in Finland
2018
Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the impact of social support on acculturation process and its’ outcomes on the current mental and physical health of refugees resettling in Jyväskylä, Finland. Method: Data were gathered qualitatively. Eight participants of refugee back ground filled out a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic information and participated in semi-structured interviews. Two interviews were held individually and two focus-group ones. To analyse the data, qualitative thematic analysis was used. Results: Refugees settling in Finland evidenced experiences of acculturative stress. Participants had received social support both from formal and informal networ…
Studies on ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization over the zirconocene catalyst supported on MAO-modified MgCl2(THF)2. The effect of copolymerization con…

Forest accessibility, Madonie mountains (northern Sicily, Italy): implementing a GIS decision support system
2021
Valorisation and sustainable exploitation of woody biomass from cultivation interventions might be an important opportunity to track alternative development trails for rural communities in natural protected areas. The governance of Mediterranean protected areas is characterized by overlapping, sometimes conflicting institutions, stakeholders and regulations, causing negative impacts on decision-making processes. We present an open source GIS-based decision support system tool for mapping forest accessibility and optimizing woody biomass extraction. Two models were implemented to support forest managers during the decision-making process in designing and managing wood-energy supply chains. T…
Enrichment of amino acids by supported liquid membrane extraction using Aliquat 336 as a carrier
1998
Abstract The possible application of Aliquat 336 (trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride) as a carrier for liquid membrane extraction of amino acids was investigated. The extraction is performed from an aqueous donor phase with pH > 11 to an acceptor phase containing a salt solution through a supported liquid membrane with Aliquat 336 as a carrier in the membrane to facilitate amino acid transport. Counter-coupled transport of chloride anions from the acceptor phase to the donor phase is the driving force of the mass transfer in this system. The extraction efficiency depends on the donor phase pH, the carrier concentration in the liquid membrane, the composition of the acceptor phase and the hydr…
Theory-Based Interventions Combining Mental Simulation and Planning Techniques to Improve Physical Activity: Null Results from Two Randomized Control…
2016
Interventions to assist individuals in initiating and maintaining regular participation in physical activity are not always effective. Psychological and behavioral theories advocate the importance of both motivation and volition in interventions to change health behavior. Interventions adopting self-regulation strategies that foster motivational and volitional components may, therefore, have utility in promoting regular physical activity participation. We tested the efficacy of an intervention adopting motivational (mental simulation) and volitional (implementation intentions) components to promote a regular physical activity in two studies. Study 1 adopted a cluster randomized design in wh…
A novel pilot study of automatic identification of EMF radiation effect on brain using computer vision and machine learning
2020
Abstract Electromagnetic field (EMF) radiations from mobile phones and cell tower affect brain of humans and other organisms in many ways. Exposure to EMF could lead to neurological changes causing morphological or chemical changes in the brain and other internal organs. Cellular level analysis to measure and identify the effect of mobile radiations is an expensive and long process as it requires preparing the cell suspension for the analysis. This paper presents a novel pilot study to identify changes in brain morphology under EMF exposure considering drosophila melanogaster as a specimen. The brain is automatically segmented, obtaining microscopic images from which discriminatory geometri…
