The Work of Special Education Teachers in the Tiered Support System : The Finnish Case
2023
This study investigated primary school special education teachers’ (SETs’) (N = 283) conceptions on their work descriptions and uses of pedagogical documents after a reform in the national support framework. The respondents of this survey reported working mostly in Tiers 1 and 2 when all their tasks (instruction, consultation, and managerial tasks) were considered. The responsibilities of the SETs were, however, more clearly defined in Tier 3. The SETs allocate their work autonomously, but their work description is related to their workload. Clarifications in work descriptions and further elaboration of school’s tiered support functions, emphasizing collaborative practices, are suggested. p…

IT-Supported International Subsidiary Establishment Process for the Japanese Market: A Case Study on Finnish High Technology SMEs
2005
The large size of the Japanese IT market makes it attractive to and important for foreign high technology companies. However, the Japanese market is very challenging, highly competitive, and difficult to penetrate for foreign small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Most SMEs fail to penetrate into the Japanese market effectively by using modern IT-tools in the international subsidiary establishment process. No earlier in-depth empirical research exists on the IT-supported international subsidiary establishment process for this market. This study investigated and analyzed how a Finnish high technology SME implemented the ITsupported international subsidiary establishment process for the J…
A Conceptual Model for the IT-supported International Subsidiary Establishment Process
2004
This study examines how the IT-supported international subsidiary establishment process can be implemented. An in-depth literature review uncovered that there is a significant lack of literature to guide managers about how to execute the establishment process of a subsidiary through the support of various IT-tools. This study, by answering the research question “What are the phases in the establishment of a subsidiary through IT-support and how have the phases been executed?” introduces a conceptual model for the IT-supported international subsidiary establishment process. The research findings are useful for both practice and further research. peerReviewed
Experience of Ethnic Discrimination, Anxiety, Perceived Risk of COVID-19, and Social Support among Polish and International Students during the Pande…
2023
Background: Our research aimed to assess the experiences of ethnic discrimination among students in Poland (Polish and international) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also tested the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and their relationship with perceived COVID-19 risk, the severity of discrimination, and social support. Methods: The data from Polish (n = 481) and international university students (n = 105) were collected online (November–January 2020). Participants completed measures of ethnic discrimination (GEDS), anxiety scale (GAD-7), COVID-19 risk perception index, and perceived social support scale (MSPSS) questionnaires. Results: The results showed that international students reported b…
Elementary school teachers adapt their instructional support according to students' academic skills – A variable and person-oriented approach
2015
This study examined the longitudinal associations between children’s academic skills and the instructional support teachers gave individual students. A total of 253 Finnish children were tested on reading and math skills twice in the first grade and once in the second grade. The teachers of these children rated the instructional support that they gave each child in reading and mathematics. The results showed that the poorer the student’s reading and math skills were, the more support and attention the student received from his or her teacher later on. However, instructional support did not contribute positively to the subsequent development of the students’ academic skills. The person-orie…
Diversity, Complexity and Ordinality: Mental Health Services Outside the Institutions—Service Users’ and Professionals’ Experience-Based Practices an…
2021
In conjunction with the dismantling of psychiatric hospitals, social workers have been commissioned to help service users in their daily living in their homes and in the community. The consequences of these changes for experience-based knowledge and practices in their contexts remain relatively unknown. In this study, eighteen service users and the social workers they described as helpful for them were interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. The following themes emerged: “Here, there and everywhere”, “Doing, being, becoming”, “Talking” and “Order, planning and improvisation” concerning the contradictions service users and professionals m…
Factory Workers' Ordinary User Experiences: An Overlooked Perspective
2018
Experiences with technology often are described as exciting and outstanding, for instance, in relation to novel technologies at home or at work. In this article, we aim to complement this perspective by emphasizing people’s mundane and ordinary experiences with technology, that is, unremarkable experiences happening in the background of people’s attention. Based on our investigations of user experience in a semiconductor factory, we show how such ordinary experiences are substantial in workers’ everyday interactions with technology, which are mainly shaped by repetitive activities and routines. However, current conceptions of user experience seem to overlook those mundane experiences and ho…
Prognostic factors for non-asphyxia-related cardiac arrest patients undergoing extracorporeal rewarming - HELP Registry Study
2020
Objective: Extracorporeal rewarming is the treatment of choice for patients who had hypothermic cardiac arrest, allowing for best neurologic outcome. The authors’ goal was to identify factors associated with survival in nonasphyxia-related hypothermic cardiac arrest patients undergoing extracorporeal rewarming. Design: All 38 cardiac surgery departments in Poland were encouraged to report consecutive hypothermic cardiac arrest patients treated with extracorporeal life support. All variables collected were analyzed in order to compare survivor and nonsurvivor groups. The parameters available at the initiation of extracorporeal rewarming were considered as potential predictors of survival in …
Supported liquid membrane extraction of peptides
2001
The application of supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction for the enrichment of short peptides is presented. The extraction efficiency is dependent on the pH of donor phase and salt concentration in acceptor phase. Moreover, the extraction efficiency is also influenced by the peptide amino-acid sequence and hydrophobicity.
