Temperature-Responsive Surface Coatings Based on Poly(methylsilsesquioxane)-hybrid Polymers
2007
The present paper presents a new method to build up temperature-responsive surfaces. First a poly(silsesquioxane)-block-poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM) was successfully synthesized using RAFT polymerization. Spin-coating or dip-coating of PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM onto glass surfaces resulted in temperature-responsive surfaces. Surface ATR FT-IR measurements proofed the successful surface modification using PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM. IR fine structures of PNIPAM and PMSSQ could be assigned, respectively. In capillary rise experiments a change of the meniscus height measured at temperatures below or above LCST was observed, indicating a different wetting behavior. Thus, a simple spin- or dip-coating…
Functional Diblock Copolymers for the Integration of Triboluminescent Materials into Polymer Matrices
2008
This work describes the synthesis and use of new diblock copolymers to integrate functional inorganic particles into a polymer matrix. These diblock copolymers were synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) from styrene and two styrene-like monomers with protected functional groups for the later connection to the functional inorganic material. It was possible to keep the polydispersity of the block copolymers around or below 1.2 and to preset the length of the functional block to about 20 monomers or 10 mol-% of monomers. The groups for the surface functionalization (amino groups or chelating ligands) were obtained in their free form by polymer analogous reactions. As an exampl…
Liquid Crystals from Polymer-Functionalized TiO2 Nanorod Mesogens
2008
In this work, we functionalized TiO2 nanorods with dopamine-functionalized diblock copolymers. After functionalization, they are well dispersible in organic solvents. Light scattering proves that t...
Synthesis of Functional Inorganic−Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes) and Their Thin Film Properties
2008
New stable and adherent coating materials have been synthesized on the basis of inorganic/organic hybrid polymers. As the inorganic part, different poly(silsesquioxanes) (PSSQ) have been functionalized to act as polymeric chain transfer agents (CTAs) for a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, thereby determining the starting point of a controlled radical polymerization of vinyl-type monomers. Using two different CTAs acrylates, we have successfully polymerized methacrylates and styrene under RAFT polymerization conditions. Different monomers were copolymerized in such an organic block to incorporate multiple functionalities. The variation of the block ratios and …
Functional Polymer-Opals from Core-Shell Colloids
2007
Colloidal photonic crystals were prepared from monodisperse core-shell particles. The shell is hereby formed from a functional monomer, such as glycidylmethacrylate or different reactive ester monomers, which can perform chemical reactions and the core from a standard monomer, which yields highly monodisperse colloids. It was possible to crystallize the core-shell particles into artificial opals with excellent optical properties. Reactions on the functional surface of the colloids were carried out, which lead to a dramatic rise in the mechanical stability or to a functionalization of His-tagged silicatein, which acts as nanoreactor to synthesize and immobilize gold nanoparticles from auric …
Colloidal stability and self-assembling behavior of nanoclays
2020
Abstract Currently, nanoclays are attracting the attention of a wide part of the scientific community, due to some of their most peculiar features that make them good candidates for applications in different fields. In light of this, some strategies can be pursued in order to obtain stable colloidal dispersions of nanoclays with the aim to improve their features and to expand their use. Hence, this chapter presents an overview on the structural and morphological characteristics, the physico-chemical properties and the main approaches that are taken into account for the preparation of homogeneous suspensions of Halloysite, Imogolite and Laponite in both aqueous and apolar solvent media. In p…
Functionalization of Porous Polymers from High‐Internal‐Phase Emulsions and Their Applications

Functional end groups for polymers prepared using ring-opening metathesis polymerization.
2011
The precise placement of functional groups on the chain-ends of macromolecules is a major focus of polymer research. Most common living polymerization techniques offer specific methods of end-functionalization governed by the active propagating species and the kinetics of the polymerization reaction. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization has established itself as one of the most functional-group-tolerant living polymerization techniques known, but this tolerance has limited the number of available functionalization reactions. Metathesis chemists have therefore been required to develop a variety of end-functionalizations, adapting each of them to the reactivity scheme of the particular cata…
Synthesis and bio-functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles for medical diagnosis and treatment
2011
The synthesis of multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) is a highly active area of current research located at the interface between materials science, biotechnology and medicine. By virtue of their unique physical properties magnetic nanoparticles are emerging as a new class of diagnostic probes for multimodal tracking and as contrast agents for MRI. Furthermore, they show great potential as carriers for targeted drug and gene delivery, since reactive agents, such as drug molecules or large biomolecules (including genes and antibodies), can easily be attached to their surface. On the other hand, the fate of the nanoparticles inside the body is mainly determined by the interactions wi…
Enhancing the mechanical performance of polymer based nanocomposites by plasma-modification of nanoparticles
2012
Abstract The possibility of enhancing the mechanical performance of two different polymer-based nanocomposites using polyamide 6 (PA6) and poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) as matrices was investigated. The nanofillers used were, respectively, either carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or an organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 15A), both previously modified by plasma treatment to introduce polar moieties. The nanofillers were fully characterized by Raman spectroscopy, XPS, FT-IR and XRD, demonstrating their effective modification with oxygenated groups. The nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing in order to obtain films and fibres. The mechanical tests carried out on the nanoc…
