0.48Tb/s (12x40Gb/s) WDM transmission and high-quality thermo-optic switching in dielectric loaded plasmonics

2012

We demonstrate Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)-enabled transmission of 480Gb/s aggregate data traffic (12x40Gb/s) as well as high-quality 1x2 thermo-optic tuning in Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides (DLSPPWs). The WDM transmission characteristics have been verified through BER measurements by exploiting the heterointegration of a 60 mu m-long straight DLSPPW on a Silicon-on-Insulator waveguide platform, showing error-free performance for six out of the twelve channels. High-quality thermo-optic tuning has been achieved by utilizing Cycloaliphatic-Acrylate-Polymer as an efficient thermo-optic polymer loading employed in a dual-resonator DLSPPW switching structure, …

Integrated plasmonic nanotweezers for nanoparticle manipulation.

2016

We numerically demonstrate that short gold nanoparticle chains coupled to traditional SOI waveguides allow conceiving surface plasmon-based nanotweezers. This configuration provides for jumpless control of the trapping position of a nano-object as a function of the excitation wavelength, allowing for linear repositioning. This novel feature can be captivating for the conception of compact integrated optomechanical nanoactuators.

Fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide-ring resonators.

2012

We demonstrate optical fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide-ring resonators (DLSPP-WRRs), whose transmission depends on the ambient temperature. The DLSPP-WRR-based temperature sensors represent polymer ridge waveguides (~1×1 µm(2) in cross section) forming 5-µm-radius rings coupled to straight waveguides fabricated by UV-lithography on a 50-nm-thick gold layer atop a 2.3-µm-thick CYTOP layer covering a Si wafer. A broadband light source is used to characterize the DLSPP-WRR wavelength-dependent transmission in the range of 1480-1600 nm and to select the DLSPP-WRR component for temperature sensing. In- and out-coupling single-mod…

Structural and Optical Properties of Novel Surfactant Coated TiO2–Ag Based Nanoparticles

2010

Stable dispersions of surfactant-coated TiO2–Ag based nanoparticles in apolar medium have been prepared by performing sequentially the hydrolysis of titanium(IV) isopropoxide and the reduction of Ag? in the confined space of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (NaAOT) reverse micelles. Depending on the sequence length, this novel procedure allowed the synthesis of semiconductor–metal nanoparticles, nominally indicated as TiO2/Ag, TiO2/Ag/TiO2, and TiO2/Ag/TiO2/ Ag, stabilized by a monolayer of oriented surfactant molecules. The structural characterization of these nanoparticles has been performed by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), while optical properties were …

Nanosecond thermo-optical dynamics of polymer loaded plasmonic waveguides

2013

The thermo-optical dynamics of polymer loaded surface plasmon waveguide (PLSPPW) based devices photo-thermally excited in the nanosecond regime is investigated. We demonstrate thermo-absorption of PLSPPW modes mediated by the temperature-dependent ohmic losses of the metal and the thermally controlled field distribution of the plasmon mode within the metal. For a PLSPPW excited by sub-nanosecond long pulses, we find that the thermo-absorption process leads to modulation depths up to 50% and features an activation time around 2ns whereas the relaxation time is around 800ns, four-fold smaller than the cooling time of the metal film itself. Next, we observe the photo-thermal activation of PLSP…

Gram-scale selective synthesis of WO3−x nanorods and (NH4)xWO3 ammonium tungsten bronzes with tunable plasmonic properties

2021

Localized surface plasmon resonance properties in unconventional materials like metal oxides or chalcogenide semiconductors have been studied for use in signal detection and analysis in biomedicine and photocatalysis. We devised a selective synthesis of the tungsten oxides WO3-x and (NH4)xWO3 with tunable plasmonic properties. We selectively synthesized WO3-x nanorods with different aspect ratios and hexagonal tungsten bronzes (NH4)xWO3 as truncated nanocubes starting from ammonium metatungstate (NH4)6H2W12O40·xH2O. Both particles form from the same nuclei at temperatures >200 °C; monomer concentration and surfactant ratio are essential variables for phase selection. (NH4)xWO3 was the prefe…

A Controllable and Highly Propagative Hybrid Surface Plasmon-Phonon Polariton in a CdZnO-based Two-Interface System

2019

The development of new nanophotonic devices requires the understanding and modulation of the propagating surface plasmon and phonon modes arising in plasmonic and polar dielectric materials, respectively. Here we explore the CdZnO alloy as a plasmonic material, with a tunable plasma frequency and reduced losses compared to pure CdO. By means of attenuated total reflectance, we experimentally observe the hybridization of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) in the air-CdZnO-sapphire three-layer system. We show how through the precise control of the CdZnO thickness, the resonance frequencies of the hybrid surface plasmon-phonon polariton (SPPP) are tune…

Acousto-Plasmonic Hot Spots: Driving Enhanced Raman Scattering in Metallic Nanoparticles

2010

We study theoretically and experimentally the coupling of acoustic vibrations (phonons) and surface plasmons in metallic nano-objects. The modulation of the surface charge density allows for the interpretation of experimental Raman-Brillouin spectra in silver nanorods.

Non-resonant Raman spectroscopy of individual ZnO nanowires via Au nanorod surface plasmons

2016

We present a non-resonant Raman spectroscopy study of individual ZnO nanowires mediated by Au nanorod surface plasmons. In this approach, selective excitation of the plasmonic oscillations with radiation energy below the semiconductor bandgap was used to probe surface optical modes of individual ZnO nanowires without simultaneous excitation of bulk phonons modes or band-edge photoluminescence. The development of a reproducible method for decoration of nanowires with colloidal Au nanorods allowed performing an extensive statistical analysis addressing the variability and reproducibility of the Raman features found in the hybrid nanostructures. An estimated field enhancement factor of 103 was…

Spatial Distribution of the Nonlinear Photoluminescence in Au Nanowires

2019

When gold nanowires are excited with a tightly focused femtosecond laser a distributed nonlinear photoluminescence (N-PL) develops throughout the entire structure. A complete spaced-resolved analysis of the spectral signature of the nanowire nonlinear response is carried out to understand the origin of the distributed nonlinear response. We discuss various mechanisms to explain the experimental data and unambiguously demonstrate that the spatial and spectral extension of the N-PL in the nanowire are mainly dictated by the propagation of a surface plasmon excited at the pump wavelength. We also present experimental signature of near-field excitation of a broadband continuum of surface plasmo…
