Controlled UV-C light-induced fusion of thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles.

Thiol-passivated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of a relatively small size, either decorated with chromophoric groups, such as a phthalimide (Au@PH) and benzophenone (Au@BP), or capped with octadecanethiol (Au@ODCN) have been synthesized and characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Extruded Expanded Polystyrene Sheets Coated by TiO2 as New Photocatalitic Materials for Foodstuffs Packaging

Nanostructured, photoactive anatase TiO2 sol prepared under very mild conditions using titanium tetraisopropoxide as the precursor is used to functionalise extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS) sheets by spray-coating resulting in stable and active materials functionalised by TiO2 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic tests of these sheets performed in a batch reactor in gas-solid system under UV irradiation show their successful activity in degrading probe molecules (2-propanol, trimethylamine and ethene). Hydrogen peroxide sensors for cellular imaging based on horse radish peroxidase reconstituted on polymer-functionalized TiO2 nanorods

We describe the reconstitution of apo-horse radish peroxidase (apo-HRP) onto TiO2 nanorods functionalized with a multifunctional polymer. After functionalization, the horse radish peroxidase (HRP) functionalized TiO2 nanorods were well dispersible in aqueous solution, catalytically active and biocompatible, and they could be used to quantify and image H2O2 which is a harmful secondary product of cellular metabolism. Determination of the lowest-energy oxidation site in nucleotides: 2'-deoxythymidine 5'-monophosphate anion.

High level ab initio computations anticipate nucleobases as the most favorable sites for oxidation in nucleotides. At the CASPT2 level, the lowest ionization channel for the 2'-deoxythymidine 5'-monophosphate anion is related to a pi-orbital of the thymine base. The present findings lead to revision of the recent assignments of the photodetachment photoelectron spectra of mononucleotide anions in the gas phase and support the classical view of the nucleobase being the main actor in the oxidation process of both nucleosides and nucleotides.

Structural and Transport Properties of Bola C-16 Micelles in Water and in Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions

Aqueous solutions containing a bolaform surfactant [R,ω-(4,7,10,13-pentaoxa-16-azacyclooctadecane)- hexadecane], with and without electrolytes have been investigated as a function of surfactant concentration and ionic strength. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS), NMR self-diffusion, and other physical-chemical methods were used. From the analysis of SANS data it was inferred that in water the surfactant forms slightly charged ellipsoidal micelles, because of the partial hydrolysis of amino groups. Species-specific aggregation factor in sponges : VIII. Nature and alteration of cell surface charge.

Isolated cells from the siliceous spongeGeodia cydonium have been studied with respect to their partition behaviour in a two-phase aqueous polymer system. With this method it is possible to determine subtle changes in the cell surface charge. Addition of a homologous aggregation factor to the isolated cells lowers the partition rate, a finding which indicates that after binding of the aggregation factor to the cells their surface charge is reduced. The partition rate of the cells is strongly correlated with their content of membranebound sialic acid.
