First-line cisplatin with docetaxel or vinorelbine in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: A quality of life directed phase II randomiz…
2009
Abstract Background Quality of life (QoL) has gained greater importance in the management of metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer due to the palliative nature of treatment. Docetaxel (DCT) and cisplatin (CDDP) doublet has been reported to be associated to a better QoL than the weekly vinorelbine (VNR) and CDDP regimen. Recently a newer more tolerated schedule of the VNR/CDDP regimen has been published and is widely employed in medical practice. The impact of these regimens on patients' QoL as well as symptoms control and type and grading chemo-related side-effects has been compared prospectically. Methods Patients received CDDP 75mg/m 2 plus DCT 75mg/m 2 on day 1 every weeks (arm A) or CDD…
Different prognosis in hospitalized patients with influenza one season after the pandemic H1N1 influenza of 2009-2010 in Spain
2013
Background The present report compares prognosis in hospitalized cases with the H1N1 pandemic virus in two seasons. Methods Two series of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 pandemic influenza have been compared: 813 in the season 2009–2010 and 707 in the season 2010–2011. A detailed history of variables preceding hospital admission and during hospitalization was obtained by interview and clinical charts. A combined endpoint of death admission to intensive care was used as outcome due to the low number of deaths. Logistic regression was applied in the analysis for adverse outcome. Results Patients of the second season had different characteristics than in the first one (old…
Incidence of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing thoracotomy for lung cancer
2008
Limited information exists on the incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (vTE) in patients undergoing chest surgery for lung cancer. Several factors increase the thromboembolic risk in patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer: the intrinsic procoagulant effect of cancer, extensive surgical intervention, dependent limb position in the operating room, and vessel injury consequent to the operation. Furthermore, these patients might be especially vulnerable to pulmonary embolism (PE) because of the loss of lung tissue and the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular diseases caused by smoking.t Older studies found a very high incidence of thromboembolic eve…
Retrospective dosimetry for Latvian workers at Chernobyl.
2001
Between 1986 and 1991 approximately 6500 Latvian inhabitants were recruited for clean-up work at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Their absorbed doses are usually unknown, because less than half of them had their external exposure officially documented. Clinical investigations show a high morbidity rate for these clean-up workers when compared with that of the general population. In order to understand the causes of their diseases and the impact of ionising radiation, electron spin resonance (ESR) has been used to measure the absorbed doses in human tooth enamel. The doses estimated by ESR were between two and three times higher than previously documented and are in accord with the result…
Multicentric evaluation of model for end-stage liver disease-based allocation and survival after liver transplantation in Germany - Limitations of th…
2010
Summary Since the introduction of model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) in 2006, post-orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) survival in Germany has declined. The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors and prognostic scores for outcome. All adult OLT recipients in seven German transplant centers after MELD implementation (December 2006–December 2007) were included. Recipient data were analyzed for their influence on 1-year outcome. A total of 462 patients (mean calculated MELD = 20.5, follow-up: 1 year) were transplanted for alcoholic cirrhosis (33.1%), hepatocellular carcinoma (26.6%), Hepatitis-C (17.1%), Hepatitis-B (9.5%), primary sclerosing cholangitis (5.6%) and late graft-…
Nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation in adults with high-risk ALL may be effective in early but not in advanced disease
2002
The feasibility of nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation (NST) was evaluated in 22 adults with high-risk ALL. 16/22 patients had advanced disease and 11/22 had Ph+ ALL. Eleven patients received NST as first stem cell transplantation (SCT). Eleven patients had relapses after allogeneic or autologous SCT and underwent a salvage NST. 18/22 patients (82%) engrafted after NST. 13/16 patients (81%) with active disease reached complete remission (CR). 11 of 13 patients developed GVHD. After first NST 10/11 patients (91%) engrafted. Six of seven patients with active disease reached CR. Three of five relapsing patients reached subsequent CR after donor lymphocyte infusions, termination of immun…
Efficacy and Tolerability of Biweekly Bevacizumab, Irinotecan, Folinic Acid and Fluorouracil Intravenous Bolus (BIFF Regimen) in Patients With Metast…
2011
Abstract Background We have extensively assessed a biweekly regimen of irinotecan plus folinic acid and fluorouracil bolus (IRIFAFU) in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC). Here, we report on the safety and activity of BIFF (bevacizumab plus IRIFAFU) regimen in 94 mCRC patients. Patients and Methods Bevacizumab 5 mg/kg (1 hour), and irinotecan 180 mg/m 2 (1hour) were given intravenously on day 1, 6S-folinic acid 250 mg/m 2 (2 hours), and fluorouracil 850 mg/m 2 (bolus) were given intravenously on day 2 every 2 weeks for a median of 9 cycles per patient (range, 1-12), and maintenance bevacizumab alone was delivered in 16 cases. Results Grade ≥ 3 hematologic toxicities were neutropenia (50%) …
Statistical analysis of life history calendar data
2016
The life history calendar is a data-collection tool for obtaining reliable retrospective data about life events. To illustrate the analysis of such data, we compare the model-based probabilistic event history analysis and the model-free data mining method, sequence analysis. In event history analysis, we estimate instead of transition hazards the cumulative prediction probabilities of life events in the entire trajectory. In sequence analysis, we compare several dissimilarity metrics and contrast data-driven and user-defined substitution costs. As an example, we study young adults' transition to adulthood as a sequence of events in three life domains. The events define the multistate event…
Two-year clinical performance of a packable posterior composite with and without a flowable composite liner
2003
The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical performance of a packable fine hybrid dental composite (Prodigy Condensable) and the influence of the additional application of a flowable resin composite (Revolution, SDS Kerr) layer on marginal integrity after 2 years in stress-bearing posterior cavities according to the Ryge criteria. In 50 patients (40.5+/-17.5 years of age), 116 class II fillings (metal matrix system, glass ionomer-cement-base in 36%, rubberdam isolation in 70%) were placed, with at least two restorations per patient. The adhesive Optibond Solo Plus was used for all the restorations. In one of the two fillings in each patient, an additional layer of the flowable composi…
Prognostic significance of DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction, and tissue levels of aspartic, cysteine, and serine proteases in operable gastric carcinoma
2000
A consecutive series of 63 untreated patients undergoing surgical resection for stage I-IV gastric adenocarcinomas (GCs) has been prospectively studied. Our purpose was to analyze the predictive relevance of DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction (SPF), and tissue levels of lysosomal proteinases cathepsin D (CD), cathepsin B (CB), cathepsin L (CL), and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and that of the intracellular cysteine proteinase inhibitor stefin A on clinical outcome. All of the patients taking part in this study were followed up for a median of 73 months. DNA aneuploidy was present in 71% of the cases (45/63), whereas 9% of these (4/45) showed multiclonality. Both DNA ploidy and SPF w…
