INNOVATION AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE IN THE HISTORIC CITY.THEORY AND TOOLS

2016

The ancient heritage is a fundamental territorial resource, the reason why territory protection and conservation have to be reinforced, as much as it’s necessary to improve its promotion and responsible use. In particular, cultural heritage promotion inside the cultural circuit, gives the chance to own the territory in terms of social and tourist resource. In this perspective, the process of valorization of the historical sites must be proactive and strategic in order to spread knowledge of cultural heritage, through the use of advanced tools for the understanding of the exhibition in the museum context; but also to improve the public use. As part of integrated strategies for sustainable de…

An intergenerational competency framework : Competencies for knowledge sustainability and start‐up development in the digital age

2022

In this study, we looked at the competencies and changes in the competency spectrum required for global start-ups in the digital age. Specifically, we explored intergenerational collaboration as an intervention in which experienced business-people from senior adult groups support young entrepreneurs. We conducted a Delphi study with 20 experts from different disciplines, considering the study context. The results of this study shed light on understanding the necessary competencies of entrepreneurs for intergenerationally supported start-up innovation by providing 27 competencies categorized as follows: intergenerational safety facilitation, cultural awareness, virtues for growth, effectual …

EU Projects Going Virtual : The ONE Meeting Approach

2022

The ONE meeting approach aims to equip EU project managers and HE leadership with skills and competencies needed for making EU projects more efficient, greener and more sustainable. Our target groups can pick out what is relevant for them: The ONE Business Case provides evidence and offers tools to check the potential benefits for the environment; the ONE Virtual Toolkit offers a systematised collection of tools for virtual collaboration; and the ONE Guide presents a proof of concept and a step-by-step approach for switching to a ONE meeting only format. In the long run, we hope to impact project work on a regional, national and international level to become more sustainable and effective, …

Regional Farmers’ Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

2021

We explore the current situation in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain from a holistic and multifaceted research approach, which allowed us to understand the biophysical conditions, economic cost, social impact, and perception of the farmers’ community to the use of catch crops. A survey of the perception of the farmers, and an assessment of the biophysical impact of catch crops (CC) and tillage (C = Control plot) on soil organic matter, bulk density, infiltration capacity (single ring infiltrometer), and runoff generation and soil erosion (rainfall simulation experiments) was carried out. Two representative fields as study sites were selected in Les Alcusses valley, within Els Alforins…

WASTE PLASTICS MANAGEMENT IN MUNICIPALITIES: LOGISTICS AND PROCESSES IN LOMBARDIA (NORTHERN ITALY)

2013

A partnership of 49 Municipalities lying in Lombardia (Northern Italy) and belonging to the District “Monza and Brianza” has entrusted the management of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to two Public Companies: “C.E.M. Ambiente S.p.A.” - which owns and operates a transfer station and a multi-material centre - and “SERUSO S.p.A.”, whose single facility is set up and equipped for a high performance factory sorting of the dry fraction of the urban waste. The catchment area is populated by 448 000, living in an area of 366 km2. The management system starts with household sorting for multi-bin curbside collection; followed by hauling to selection and physical treatment facilities; and last, trans…

Effect of temperature on anaerobic treatment of black water in UASB-septic tank systems

2007

The effect of northern European seasonal temperature changes and low temperature on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB)-septic tanks treating black water was studied. Three UASB-septic tanks were monitored with different operational parameters and at different temperatures. The results indicated the feasibility of the UASB-septic tank for (pre)treatment of black water at low temperatures with respect to removal of suspended solids and dissolved organic material. Inoculum sludge had little effect on COD(ss) removal, though in the start-up phase some poorly adapted inoculum disintegrated and washed out, thus requiring consideration when designing the process. Removal of …

The sustainable lifestyle of Aalborg

2020

The strongest and most appealing image of Aalborg is its waterfront, facing the Limfjord that runs across Denmark, halfway between Kattegat and the North Sea. However, until a few decades ago, this water-“front” could have been described more likely as a sequence of “rears” of inaccessible, degraded and disused factories and abandoned port infrastructures. Fed by the strongest will power, the city council decided to adopt a new project in order to emerge from the economic crisis that, between the Seventies and Eighties, saw factories and industries shutting down one by one. The idea therefore was to reconvert the image of the city from an industrial and port center into a strategic, innovat…

A Comparative Eye Tracking Study of Usability—Towards Sustainable Web Design

2021

Websites are one of the most frequently used communication environments, and creating sustainable web designs should be an objective for all companies. Ensuring high usability is proving to be one of the main contributors to sustainable web design, reducing usage time, eliminating frustration and increasing satisfaction and retention. The present paper studies the usability of different website landing pages, seeking to identify the elements, structures and designs that increase usability. The study analyzed the behavior of 22 participants during their interaction with five different landing pages while they performed three tasks on the webpage and freely viewed each page for one minute. Th…

Built Environment and Wellbeing—Standards, Multi-Criteria Evaluation Methods, Certifications

2022

The debate on IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality), with a focus on the healthiness of the built environment and its possible influence on the natural environment, has been a relevant topic for a decade. This interest has expanded to the quality of building technologies, specifically their performances and environmental effects. The objectives set by the 2030 Agenda have led to overcome the idea that sustainability is only related to environment; instead, a holistic vision aimed at human health has been affirmed (objective 3). The period marked by the Covid19 emergency contributed to strengthen the need for human well-being, as the “quarantine” made us observe our living spaces, r…
