Movement and physical activity in early childhood education and care policies of five nordic countries

The purpose of this study was to examine the values of movement and physical activity (MoPA) using government policy documents (e.g., laws and curricula) on early childhood education and care (ECEC) from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. This descriptive, comparative study was designed based on curriculum theory and used word count and content analyses to identify similarities and differences in the occurrence of MoPA in the ECEC policies of Nordic countries. Seven terms were identified as MoPA-related in Nordic policy documents. Curricula, influenced by the digitalization, set requirements for early childhood education (ECE) settings to implement digital practices. However, ECE teachers are struggling to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) and child-centered pedagogy, such as digital portfolios, successfully into practice. Previous research efforts have focused on analyzing the barriers of digital technology implementation. Kielitietoisuus on yksi uusista käsitteistä uudessa varhaiskasvatusta ohjaavassa asiakirjassa Varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteet 2016, johon pohjautuvat paikalliset opetussuunnitelmat otettiin käyttöön elokuussa 2017. Artikkelissani kuvailen, miten kielitietoisuuden käsite tuodaan esille varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteissa. Kielitietoisuutta käsitellään asiakirjassa laajana käsitteenä ja siihen viitataan asiakirjan niissä osissa, jotka koskevat varhaiskasvatuksen pedagogista toimintaa ja toimintakulttuuria.
