The Shielding Effect of Drilling Fluids on MWD Downhole Compasses: The Effect of Drilling Fluid Composition, Contaminants and Rheology

2014

Materials such as added clays, weight materials, drill solids and metalic wear products in the drilling fluid are known to distort the geomagnetic field at the location of the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool magnetometers that are used to measure the direction of well path. This distortion contributes to substantial errors in determination of azimuth while drilling deviated wells. These errors may result in missing the target of a long deviated 12 ¼″ section in the range of 1–200m; representing a significant cost to be mitigated. The error becomes even more pronounced if drilling occurs in arctic regions close to the magnetic North Pole (or South Pole). The effect on the magnetometer …

Thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of beeswax-halloysite nanocomposites for consolidating waterlogged archaeological woods

2015

Abstract Thermal and mechanical properties were determined for the halloysite nanotubes (HNT)/beeswax composites at various compositions. The beeswax degradation temperatures and time course, provided by thermogravimetry (TG), evidenced the improvement of the thermal properties operated by HNT. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) allowed us to determine the enthalpy of melting as well as the time course of the melting process for beeswax. A slight loss of beeswax crystallinity was observed upon HNT addition. The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) provided the loss and the storage modulus for the nanocomposites upon heating and it was shown that the nanoclays create an inorganic framewo…

Preliminary analysis of mastication dynamics and fragmentation during chewing of brittle cereal foods

2013

We studied the masticatory behaviour of five commercial brittle cereal foods, with different formulations, shapes and mechanical properties, chewed by an individual. The investigation of oral behaviour consisted in a simultaneous recording of jaw kinematics and muscle activity by electromyography (EMG) and we also determined the food size distribution at the swallowing point by image analysis. Similar behaviour was found for the evolution of all criteria, and especially the predominance of compression, which could be attributed to the brittle behaviour of the foods. The amplitude of the jaw motion decreased with the number of chewing cycles, or sequence duration, whereas the maximum mastica…

Partial joint processing with efficient backhauling using particle swarm optimization

2012

In cellular communication systems with frequency reuse factor of one, user terminals (UT) at the cell-edge are prone to intercell interference. Joint processing is one of the coordinated multipoint transmission techniques proposed to mitigate this interference. In the case of centralized joint processing, the channel state information fed back by the users need to be available at the central coordination node for precoding. The precoding weights (with the user data) need to be available at the corresponding base stations to serve the UTs. These increase the backhaul traffic. In this article, partial joint processing (PJP) is considered as a general framework that allows reducing the amount …

Towards Multilevel Ant Colony Optimisation for the Euclidean Symmetric Traveling Salesman Problem

2015

Ant Colony Optimization ACO metaheuristic is one of the best known examples of swarm intelligence systems in which researchers study the foraging behavior of bees, ants and other social insects in order to solve combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, a multilevel Ant Colony Optimization MLV-ACO for solving the traveling salesman problem is proposed, by using a multilevel process operating in a coarse-to-fine strategy. This strategy involves recursive coarsening to create a hierarchy of increasingly smaller and coarser versions of the original problem. The heart of the approach is grouping the variables that are part of the problem into clusters, which is repeated until the size…

Constraint handling in efficient global optimization

2017

Real-world optimization problems are often subject to several constraints which are expensive to evaluate in terms of cost or time. Although a lot of effort is devoted to make use of surrogate models for expensive optimization tasks, not many strong surrogate-assisted algorithms can address the challenging constrained problems. Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) is a Kriging-based surrogate-assisted algorithm. It was originally proposed to address unconstrained problems and later was modified to solve constrained problems. However, these type of algorithms still suffer from several issues, mainly: (1) early stagnation, (2) problems with multiple active constraints and (3) frequent crashes.…

Non-linear optimization of track layouts in loop-sorting-systems

2013

Optimization used for enhancing geometric structures iswell known. Applying obstacles to the shape optimization problemis on the other hand not very common. It requires a fast contact search algorithmand an exact continuous formulation to solve the problem robustly. This paper focuses on combining shape optimization problemswith collision avoidance constraints by which a collision detection algorithmis presented. The presentedmethod is tested against the commercial loop-sorting-system used for sorting of medium sized items. The objective is to minimize price and footprint of the system whilemaintaining its functionality. Contact constraints are in this context important to include as variou…

Frequency constrained optimal Power Flow based on Glow-worm Swarm Optimization in Islanded Microgrids

2015

This work presents an application of a swarm optimization method to solve the optimal power flow problem taking into account the constraints of frequency and line ampacity in three-phase islanded Microgrids. Each generation unit is equipped with a Power Electronics Interface. In the considered formulation, the droop control parameters are considered as variables to be adjusted by a higher control level, while the frequency is kept in rated bounds. Another typical constraint for OPF formulation, the max ampacity of each line, is also considered. Two case studies with different dimensions and electrical features have been considered and the obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed…

Monotonic solution of flow and transport problems in heterogeneous media using Delaunay unstructured triangular meshes

2013

Transport problems occurring in porous media and including convection, diffusion and chemical reactions, can be well represented by systems of Partial Differential Equations. In this paper, a numerical procedure is proposed for the fast and robust solution of flow and transport problems in 2D heterogeneous saturated media. The governing equations are spatially discretized with unstructured triangular meshes that must satisfy the Delaunay condition. The solution of the flow problem is split from the solution of the transport problem and it is obtained with an approach similar to the Mixed Hybrid Finite Elements method, that always guarantees the M-property of the resulting linear system. The…

One of the problems that hinder emergency in developing countries is the problem of monitoring a number of activities on inter-urban roadway networks. In the literature, the use of control points is proposed in the context of these countries in order to ensure efficient monitoring, by ensuring a good coverage while minimizing the installation costs as well as the number of accidents across these road networks. In this work, we propose an optimal deployment of these control points from several optimization methods based on some evolutionary multi-objective algorithms: the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II); the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO); the streng…
