Volume change response and fabric evolution of granular MX80 bentonite along different hydro-mechanical stress paths

2022

AbstractDespite the increasing understanding of bentonite behaviour, there is still missing evidence on how different hydro-mechanical loadings, including sequences of hydration and compression, affect the fabric and the volume change behaviour of the material. It is generally assumed that the interplay between the behaviour of clay assemblages and the overall fabric of the material is the reason of having final states that are dependent on the stress path followed. Here the results of an experimental campaign aiming to study these factors are reported and discussed. Free swelling and swelling pressure tests were performed, both followed by compression to a relatively high stress. The exper…

Swelling of glial cells in lactacidosis and by glutamate: significance of Cl(-)-transport.

1993

Swelling of glial and nerve cells is characteristic of brain damage in cerebral ischemia or trauma. The therapeutical efficiency of inhibition of Cl(-)-transport by a novel antagonist, the diuretic torasemide, on cytotoxic swelling of glial cells from lactacidosis, or glutamate was analyzed. Lactacidosis and the interstitial accumulation of glutamate are hallmarks of the pathophysiological alterations in ischemic or traumatic brain tissue. C6 glioma cells harvested from culture and suspended in a physiological medium were either exposed to pH 6.2, or 5.0 by lactic acid, or exposed to 1 mM glutamate at normal pH. Cell swelling and viability were quantified by flow cytometry. Lactacidosis of …

Colonic drug delivery: influence of cross-linking agent on pectin beads properties and role of the shell capsule type.

2006

For colonic delivery, pectin beads obtained by ionotropic gelation method have been already reported as an interesting approach. This study investigated the influence of the cross-linking agent (calcium or zinc) and the type of shell capsule used (classical or enteric capsules) on pectin beads properties and on their performance to target the colon (in vitro dissolution studies with subsequent pH change to mimic overall gastro-intestinal tract). Zinc pectinate beads seemed to be relatively similar to calcium's ones in morphological point, except on the surface aspect. When beads were introduced in classical hard capsules, ketoprofen release was not significantly different between CPG and ZP…

Fabric evolution and the related swelling behaviour of a sand/bentonite mixture upon hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings

2015

This experimental study investigates the swelling behaviour of an 80/20 sand/bentonite mixture and the associated fabric evolution under different hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings. Free and confined swelling tests are performed on specimens compacted to different dry densities and wetted with different pore fluids. Controlled suction confined swelling tests are performed to determine the suction–swelling pressure relationship for two different densities. An extensive microstructural characterisation is performed to relate the observed swelling behaviour to the evolution of the different pore networks during wetting. Based on the microstructural analysis, an expression is proposed to determi…

The rheological behaviour of HDPE/LDPE blends. II. Die swell and normal stresses

1984

Die swell data are presented for different high-density/low-density polyethylene blends. The data relating to samples with frozen-in stresses are represented, collected as a function of the usual operational parameters (L/D ratio, flow rate, temperature). Data obtained with annealed samples are used to derive, through a theoretical approach, normal stresses. An getemperten Proben gemessene Wert…

Highly protective alkalinization by ammonia vapor diffusion in viscosimetric DNA damage assessment.

1988

A method for the measurement of viscosities correlated to DNA alterations in alkaline homogenate suspensions is described. The alkaline pH shift to afford cell lysis, DNA unfolding, and denaturation is attained by gaseous ammonia diffusion, thus avoiding shear stress from mechanical mixing. At the same time a stabilizing density gradient is established. This solution is run through a plastic measuring tube that is wide enough to minimize the influence of uneven swelling of the lysing DNA-containing components. Flow times under a carefully controlled water head are registered, and their ratios to control solutions are evaluated. The relative viscosities show a strong and irreversible depende…

SURFACE AND MECHANISTIC PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Problem Often, when the characteristics of a bituminous mixture are analised, there are major differences between in-lab and in-situ results. This is due to the fact that the procedures and techniques implemented during the design phase (in lab) may be different from those used on site. Then, is very important to be able to predict the main properties of a mixture particularly when innovative materials are used. For example, when crumb rubber is used, phisical and volumetric properties of mixes may change over time, in particular due to the swelling phenomenon that it alters different properties of the mixture (e.g., viscosity). This study aims to investigate the main aspe…

Reversed sexual conflict in a promiscuous antelope.

2007

SummaryA general tenet of sexual conflict theory is that males have higher optimum mating rates than do females and therefore should be more persistent when it comes to mating. However, in promiscuous species, females might benefit from high mating rates as a result of increased conception probability with favored males, whereas favored males benefit from mating selectively because of sperm depletion. When this results in higher optimum mating rates for females than for males, there is potential for reversed sexual conflicts between persistent females and resistant males. Here I report evidence of such a reversed sexual conflict in a promiscuous antelope, the African topi. Rather than matin…

Heterogeneity of osteogenesis imperfecta. Biochemical and morphological findings in a case of type III according to Sillence.

1986

A male infant with pale-blue sclerae, who died at the age of 6 weeks through the aspiration of food, presented multiple fractures and deformation of the long tubular bones. The clinical and radiological findings and the course indicated osteogenesis imperfecta, type III, according to Sillence's classification. The family history was unremarkable. Light and electron microscopic studies of iliac crest bone obtained postmortem, showed an abrupt interruption of endochondral ossification, with an active periosteal ossification. In the region of the fractures, a mixed desmochondral callus was seen. The endoplasmic reticulum of the osteoblasts was markedly dilated, the mitochondria were swollen. T…
