Conceptual design of the TRACE detector readout using a compact, dead time-less analog memory ASIC

2015

[EN] The new TRacking Array for light Charged particle Ejectiles (TRACE) detector system requires monitorization and sampling of all pulses in a large number of channels with very strict space and power consumption restrictions for the front-end electronics and cabling. Its readout system is to be based on analog memory ASICs with 64 channels each that sample a View the MathML source window of the waveform of any valid pulses at 200 MHz while discarding any other signals and are read out at 50 MHz with external ADC digitization. For this purpose, a new, compact analog memory architecture is described that allows pulse capture with zero dead time in any channel while vastly reducing the tota…

Single-frequency active Q-switched Distributed Fiber Laser Using Acoustic Waves

2007

This letter presents a single mode, actively Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser. Acoustic pulses are launched into an erbium-doped fiber Bragg grating, resulting in the introduction of a traveling defect. Thus, a transmission peak appears in the reflection band while the pulse travels along the grating. This effect allows the laser to operate in a Q-switched regime, providing optical pulses which repetition rate was continuously tuned up to 10 kHz. Pulses of 168 mW of peak power and 73 ns of temporal width were obtained at low repetition rate.

Dual-kind Q-switching of erbium fiber laser

2014

Two different regimes of Q-switching in the same implementation of an actively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser are demonstrated. Depending on the active fiber length and repetition rate of an intracavity Q-cell (acousto-optic modulator), the laser operates either in the regime of common, rather long and low-power, pulses composed of several sub-pulses or in the one of very short and powerful stimulated Brillouin scattering-induced pulses. The basic physical reason of the laser system to oscillate in one of these two regimes is the existence or absence of CW narrow-line “bad-cavity” lasing in the intervals when the Q-cell is blocked.

All-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser

2006

Abstract An all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser is presented. Q-switching is performed by modulating a fiber Bragg grating via a magnetostrictive rod which is fixed to the fiber at the position of the grating. By exposing the rod to a changing magnetic field, the rod is stretched and relaxed causing the Bragg wavelength of the grating to shift and thereby changes the Q-factor of the cavity. Using Yb-doped fiber, pulses at 1052 nm are obtained at repetition rates from 1 to 200 kHz. At 75 kHz, 0.5 μJ pulses with peak powers of 3 W can be produced when 180 mW of pump power is applied. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first all-fiber actively Q-switched Yb-doped laser prese…

Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator

2007

Abstract We report an actively Q-switched all-fibre laser using a fibre-optic resonant acousto-optic modulator as Q-switching element. The modulator consists of a short-length fibre Bragg grating modulated by a standing longitudinal elastic wave, being the grating length much shorter than the acoustic wavelength. Q-switch pulses were successfully obtained from an Er3+-doped fibre laser at repetition rates of 18 and 37 kHz.

Enhanced Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser based on acoustic pulses

2009

An acoustically Q-switched distributed feedback fiber laser with enhanced performance is presented. It is based on an FBG written in an erbium doped fiber, in which a dynamic defect is introduced by means of a short acoustic pulse. The performance of the laser depends on the reflectivity of the grating. In this work, we present two different Q-switched distributed feedback fiber lasers realized with active gratings of different reflectivities. Both lasers are characterized at different pump powers and repetition rates. It is shown that the performance of the laser based on the weaker grating was significantly improved with respect to the laser based on the stronger grating. In terms of peak…

Impact of wage penalty on mobility return of French PhDs

2015

International audience; Expatriation of higher-education graduates raises much concern in many countries often in conjunction with talk about the brain drain. It supposedly entails a risk of losing the skills required for a competitive economy. The issue is all the more acute for PhD graduates, who are expected to play a major part in the knowledge economy. However, questions arise as to the causes of such mobility and its consequences for young graduates' individual career paths.

Column-switching techniques for screening of diuretics and probenecid in urine samples

1994

A method based on high-performance liquid chromatography using column-switching is described for the screening of diuretics and probenecid in urine samples. The system uses a 20- x 2.1-mm i.d. precolumn, packed with a Hypersil ODS-C18, 30-microns stationary phase, for the on-line sample cleanup and enrichment. Untreated urine samples are directly injected, and the precolumn is flushed for 1 min with water to eliminate polar matrix components. The retained analytes are then back-flushed by means of a six-port switching valve onto a Hypersil ODS-C18 analytical column (5 microns, 250- x 4-mm i.d.), where they are separated using an acetonitrile/phosphate buffer (pH = 3) gradient elution. Under…

Deadline-based QoS Algorithms for High-performance Networks

2007

Quality of service (QoS) is becoming an attractive feature for high-performance networks and parallel machines because it could allow a more efficient use of resources. Deadline-based algorithms can provide powerful QoS provision. However, the cost associated with keeping ordered lists of packets makes them impractical for high-performance networks. In this paper, we explore how to adapt efficiently the earliest deadline first family of algorithms to the high-speed networks environments. The results show excellent performance using just two virtual channels, FIFO queues, and a cost feasible with today's technology.

Photo-thermal control of surface plasmon mode propagation at telecom wavelengths

2016

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is the promising versatile platform proposed for guiding electromagnetic waves at nanoscale dimensions. In this context dynamic control of SPPs prop- agation is of paramount importance. Thermo-optical (TO) effect is considered as an efficient technique for performing active control of plasmonic devices. Among the thermo-optical based plasmonic devices demonstrated so far TO coefficient is dominantly provided by a dielectric material on top of the metal sustaining the SPP mode, however, the role of TO properties of the metal has been rarely investigated for plasmonic applications especially at the telecom frequency ranges. Therefore, the aim of this thesis i…
