Towards Organization of Molecular Machines at Interfaces. Langmuir Films and Langmuir-Blodgett Multilayers of an Acid-Base Switchable Rotaxane

2006

In this context we investigated, for the first time, the organi-zation of a non-amphiphilic tricationic switchable rotaxaneand its dumbbell-shaped component into Langmuir films andLangmuir–Blodgett (LB) multilayers by using a cospreadingstrategy. The Langmuir films have been characterized by sur-face pressure–area (

Single-molecule optical switching of terrylene in p-terphenyl

1997

The controlled manipulation and switching of single atoms and molecules raise the prospect of ultra-high-density data storage. Switching by motion of a single atom has been reported1, and techniques of single-molecule optical detection and spectroscopy2 in the condensed phase have been refined to a degree that allows the modification of the absorption properties of a single chromophore3. Light-induced jumps in single-molecule excitation frequencies have been reported3,4,5, but in none of these cases could the process be controlled: the jumps varied from molecule to molecule, they were interrupted by spontaneous jumps, and the new excitation frequencies could not be identified unambiguously.…

Soft X-ray tomography of phenotypic switching and the cellular response to antifungal peptoids in Candida albicans.

2009

The opportunistic pathogen Candida albicans can undergo phenotypic switching between a benign, unicellular phenotype and an invasive, multicellular form that causes candidiasis. Increasingly, strains of Candida are becoming resistant to antifungal drugs, making the treatment of candidiasis difficult, especially in immunocompromised or critically ill patients. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop new drugs that circumvent fungal drug-resistance mechanisms. In this work we used soft X-ray tomography to image the subcellular changes that occur as a consequence of both phenotypic switching and of treating C. albicans with antifungal peptoids, a class of candidate therapeutics unaf…

Investigating switching intention of e-commerce live streaming users.

2022

As a new way of shopping, e-commerce live streaming (ELS) has gained unprecedented growth and popularity in the past years, especially in China. Because of the considerable rivalry in the ELS market, users frequently switch between ELS platforms. However, the switching intention of ELS users is yet to be explored for gaining new knowledge and practical insights. This study aims to improve the understanding of ELS users' switching intentions by developing an extended Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) model. Using structural equation modeling, the study model was examined based on 443 valid responses from an online survey questionnaire. SmartPLS 3.3.2 was used to validate the causal model, and most of …

Introduction. Multilingualism: An endless evolution

2018

This study focuses on the evolution of multilingualism from a linguistics of communitiy to a linguistics of contact till a linguistics of global societies. The growing international interest in multilingualism, which has been marked by the changing political and economic landscape of different nations in the world, is significantly represented in the media and in public discourse. Globalization, transnational population flows and the spread of new technological platforms have given rise to remarkable linguistic, cultural and demographic transformations, still occurring in the globe. The burgeoning research in bilingualism and multilingualism, which covers a broad range of specific domains fr…

Opioid switching from and to tapentadol extended release in cancer patients: conversion ratio with other opioids

2013

Objectives: The aim of this exploratory study was to assess the conversion ratios between tapentadol and other opioids in patients requiring an opioid switching. Methods: A prospective study was carried out in a convenience sample of consecutive patients admitted to an acute palliative care unit and a home care unit for a period of 1 year. Patients who were switched from/to tapentadol were selected. The initial ratio between tapentadol and other opioids, expressed as oral morphine equivalents was 1:3.3. The subsequent doses were flexible and were changed to fit the patients’ needs. Pain intensity and distress score were recorded until opioid doses were stable. In all, 37 patients were exami…

Electrochemically prepared oxides for resistive switching devices

2018

Redox-based resistive switching memories (ReRAM) based on metal oxides are considered as the next generation non-volatile memories and building units for neuromorphic computing. Using different deposition techniques results however in different structural and electric properties, modulating the device performance. In this study HfO2 and Nb2O5 were prepared electrochemically by anodizing sputtering-deposited Hf and Nb in borate buffer solution. Photoelectrochemical measurements were used to study the solid state properties of the anodic oxides, such as band gap and flat band potential. In the case of anodic HfO2, detected photocurrent is ascribed to optical transitions between localized (gen…

Dynamic packet scheduling performance in UTRA Long Term Evolution downlink

2008

In this paper we evaluate the performance of dynamic Packet Scheduling (PS) of 3GPP UTRAN Long Term Evolution (LTE) Downlink. Packet scheduling is of utmost importance in 3G LTE, because all traffic types with different Quality of Service requirements are competing of the resources. We present a decoupled time and frequency domain packet scheduling framework for LTE downlink. Simulation results with three basic packet scheduler combinations with different amount of fairness are presented in four different 3GPP macro simulation cases to show the both extremes in tradeoff between fairness and spectral efficiency. In addition, the effect of multiuser diversity on packet scheduling performance …

Memristors and nonequilibrium stochastic multistable systems

2022

The main aim of this special issue is to report the recent advances and new trends in memristors and nonequilibrium stochastic multistable systems, both theoretically and experimentally, within an interdisci-plinary context. In particular, memristors are multistable systems whose switching dynamics is a stochastic process, which can be controlled by internal and external noise sources, unveiling the constructive role of random fluctuations. Furthermore, the use of memristors as memory elements in neuromorphic systems with noise-assisted persistence of memory states, chaotic dynamics, metastable chaos and chaos synchronization, new stochastic nonlinear models, noise-induced phenomena such as…

Self-Heating Induced Instability of a Non-Linear Inductor in a SMPS: a Case Study

2023

This paper proposes a case study to show that the non-linear operation of a power inductor in a SMPS can induce instability of the control system leading to overheating of the inductor beyond its allowable temperature and to an excessive peak of the maximum current. The case study is performed by a commercial ferrite inductor employed in a synchronous boost converter encompassing a control system to adjust the duty cycle, assuring a constant output voltage. The thermal transient is described by the time domain waveforms and thermal images.
