Social Dimension and Inequality Problems in the European Union

2017

The purpose of this paper is to introduce evaluation of social development convergence between EU-28 member states in the context of the EU cohesion policy. The main tasks of this study is to assess social dimension and inequalities problems in the European states by applying theory of convergence for real estimations social situations in EU countries. Additionally the development challenges are discussed for improvement of the socio-economic well-being of EU states and to avoid social disparities. The research methodology is based on the convergence theory, on the EU strategies, European Commission legitimate documents application, on the calculations and socio-economic forecasts analysis …

Socio-economic Disparity problems and Convergence Policy in the EU States

2016

The purpose of this paper is to investigate socio-economic development condition and convergence evaluation in the EU-28 states in the context of the EU policy goals. The arm of this research is to estimate socioeconomic disparities and convergence problems in the European states by applying real valuations of well-being situations and economic development challenges in the EU member states. The research methodology is based on the European Commission legitimate documents application and socio-economic strategies, on the convergence theory and convergence scenario calculations and the socioeconomic forecasts analysis in the EU states. This research presents information about different socio…

The measurement of rank mobility

2009

Abstract In this paper we investigate the problem of measuring social mobility when the social status of individuals is given by their rank. In order to sensibly represent the rank mobility of subgroups within a given society, we address the problem in terms of partial permutation matrices which include standard (“global”) matrices as a special case. We first provide a characterization of a partial ordering on partial matrices which, in the standard case of global matrices, coincides with the well-known “concordance” ordering. We then provide a characterization of an index of rank mobility based on partial matrices and show that, in the standard case of comparing global matrices, it is equi…

Steering dynamical systems with finite plans and limited path length

2007

Complex dynamical systems can be steered by using symbolic input plans. These plans must have a finite descriptive length, and can be expressed by means of words chosen in an alphabet of symbols. In this way, such plans can be sent through a limited capacity channel to a remote system, where they are decoded in suitable control actions. The choice of this symbols is essential to efficiently encode steering plans. To this aim, in this paper, we state the problem of finding symbols maximizing the interval of points reachable by the system along paths with constrained length. We focus on the problem with two symbols, and compare the results with those produced by plans not accounting for the l…

Let the countdown begin — Aging experiences of young adults in countdown blogs

2012

Abstract This paper examines a particular blog phenomenon that has not yet received much attention: Countdown blogs which are written before a significant birthday (in this paper, it is the thirtieth birthday). The bloggers fill the remaining time, often a year, with the accomplishment of particular tasks, reflections on their lives or photo projects. In their blogs, the young adults demonstrate an age awareness that is often overlooked in aging studies. The paper argues that young adults use countdown blogs to cope with their aging experiences and, in doing so, they apply a particular economic rhetoric and emerge as entrepreneurs of themselves – an identity concept that Foucault presented …

Women Entrepreneurship and Performance

2011

Research on gendered performance in entrepreneurship is scarce, making the resolution of this issue a relevant research field. Chapter 7 starts by describing what we understand by performance, widening the concept from a financial to an operational or even a stakeholders’ satisfaction level. Next, we present some relevant research that suggests explanations for a gendered difference in entrepreneurs’ performance, mainly in terms of the existence of horizontal segregation, differences in size and in personal attributes of entrepreneurs. The discussion about gender differences in resource possession and accessibility is then introduced as a fundamental concern in this debate, by describing ec…

Rituales funerarios y de duelo colectivos y privados, religiosos o laicos

2014

My Docthoral Thesis carried out with religious subjects from different creeds and with non religious individuals found that participation in collective funerary rites and in private rituals –religious or secular - allow the mourners to say good bye and accept the death of their deceased loved ones (Paez et al., 2007)..Funerals and bereavement rituals allow the symbolic expression of feelings and thoughts, assist the mourners to cope with loss, and promote their recovery from bereavement (Pargament, 1997; Yoffe, 2012c.).

Denoising Autoencoders for Fast Combinatorial Black Box Optimization

2015

Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs) require flexible probability models that can be efficiently learned and sampled. Autoencoders (AE) are generative stochastic networks with these desired properties. We integrate a special type of AE, the Denoising Autoencoder (DAE), into an EDA and evaluate the performance of DAE-EDA on several combinatorial optimization problems with a single objective. We asses the number of fitness evaluations as well as the required CPU times. We compare the results to the performance to the Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (BOA) and RBM-EDA, another EDA which is based on a generative neural network which has proven competitive with BOA. For the considered pro…

Reordering Method and Hierarchies for Quantum and Classical Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams

2017

We consider Quantum OBDD model. It is restricted version of read-once Quantum Branching Programs, with respect to "width" complexity. It is known that maximal complexity gap between deterministic and quantum model is exponential. But there are few examples of such functions. We present method (called "reordering"), which allows to build Boolean function $g$ from Boolean Function $f$, such that if for $f$ we have gap between quantum and deterministic OBDD complexity for natural order of variables, then we have almost the same gap for function $g$, but for any order. Using it we construct the total function $REQ$ which deterministic OBDD complexity is $2^{\Omega(n/\log n)}$ and present quantu…
