'No speech at my command will fit the forms in my mind': Shaping the Spiritual through Writing and Typing in George MacDonald’s Lilith Manuscripts

2020

International audience; In “Lilith B” (1893), the most extensively rewritten draft of George MacDonald’s fantasy novel Lilith (1895), puzzling triangular-shaped insertions, some handwritten and some typed, although not retained in the later versions of the text, allow for a better understanding of the creative process and show how the material crafting of the manuscript, through collage and combination techniques, played a part in the invention of fantasy. The introduction of the typewriter as a new drafting tool in MacDonald’s writing habits, not only for copying but also for revising, corresponds to a shift in the metaphorical and allegorical system which enables the parallel worlds of th…

Mediated sacralization and the construction of postmodern communio sanctorum: The case of the Swedish foreign minister anna lindh

2005

In the media age, the linkage between mediated communities and images is established by the sacralization of images. Based on the theoretical insights of Michel Maffesoli and on an influential tradition in French sociology, which includes Emile Durkheim, Georges Bataille, and Rene Girard, this article attempts to apply the theory of sacred images to the empirical analysis of images in the media. The analysis of the Swedish and Finnish newspapers' visual coverage of the assassination of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh suggests that the process of sacralization is actually performed as a communicative behavior involving the media and the crowd as the main actors and a number of symbols wh…

Early number skills underlie success in basic arithmetic. However, very little is known about the skill profiles among children in preprimary education and how the potential profiles are related to arithmetic development. This longitudinal study of 440 Finnish children in preprimary education (mean age 75 months) modeled latent performance-level profile groups for the early number skill components that are proposed to be key predictors of arithmetic (symbolic number comparison, mapping, and verbal counting skills). Based on three assessment time points (September, January, and May), four profile groups were found: the poorest-performing (6%), low-performing (16%), near-average-performing (3…

Early communicative gestures and play as predictors of language development in children born with and without family risk for dyslexia

2014

The present study investigated early communicative gestures, play, and language skills in children born with family risk for dyslexia (FR) and a control group of children without this inheritable risk at ages 12, 15, 18, and 24 months. Participants were drawn from the Tromsø Longitudinal study of Dyslexia (TLD) which follows children's cognitive and language development from age 12 months through Grade 2 in order to identify early markers of developmental dyslexia. Results showed that symbolic play and parent reported play at age 12 months and communicative gestures at age 15 months explained 61% of the variance in productive language at 24 months in the FR group. These early nonlinguistic …

Symbolic function explored in children with epilepsy and headache.

2007

Introduzione.

The development and predictive relations of play and language across the second year

1999

The play and language development of 171 toddlers was examined at 14 and 18 months by observing their activities on the Symbolic Play Test and by assessing their language skills using the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (MCDI) and the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Additionally, data from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and the MCDI were obtained at 24 months, in order to investigate how play and language measures taken at 14 and 18 months predict children's development at the age of 2 years. The results showed that the vocabulary production and symbolic play of the 14-month-old toddlers made a unique contribution to their language and cognitive skills at the…
