Quantum Simulations of One-Dimensional Nanostructures under Arbitrary Deformations
2016
A powerful technique is introduced for simulating mechanical and electromechanical properties of one-dimensional nanostructures under arbitrary combinations of bending, twisting, and stretching. The technique is based on a novel control of periodic symmetry, which eliminates artifacts due to deformation constraints and quantum finite-size effects, and allows transparent electronic structure analysis. Via density-functional tight-binding implementation, the technique demonstrates its utility by predicting novel electromechanical properties in carbon nanotubes and abrupt behavior in the structural yielding of Au7 and MoS nanowires. The technique drives simulations markedly closer to the reali…
The S-kernel: A measure of symmetry of objects
2007
In this paper we introduce a new symmetry feature named ''symmetry kernel'' (SK) to support a measure of symmetry. Given any symmetry transform S, SK of a pattern P is the maximal included symmetric sub-set of P for all directions and shifts. We provide a first algorithm to exhibit this kernel where the centre of symmetry is assumed to be the centre of mass. Then we prove that, in any direction, the optimal axis corresponds to the maximal correlation of a pattern with its symmetric version. That leads to a second algorithm. The associated symmetry measure is a modified difference between the respective surfaces of a pattern and its kernel. A series of experiments supports the actual algorit…
Visual Discrimination of the 17 Plane Symmetry Groups
2011
Within most of the 17 plane symmetry groups, individual symmetry operations act in multiple, nonequivalent ways. This, and the fact that many groups can be realized on the basis of different unit cells and generating regions, poses difficulties for visual discrimination and identification. Because of inherent confounds, only few of the groups can be studied by traditional experimental methodology. The use of an oddity paradigm and specific tiling patterns that camouflage groups in complex textures are recommended as partial remedy to this impasse. In order to prepare readers for an appreciation of the aforementioned issues and to provide a rationale for their investigation, the reporting of…
Simmetry
2020
Since its earliest attestations, the Greek word συμμετρία (composed of συν [together] and μετρία [measure]) oscillates between two different meanings, linked to a static and to a dynamic conception.
Effects of internal texture on cognitive preferences concerning rotational symmetry
2009
This paper explores the effects of the internal texture of an image on cognitive preferences relative to symmetry detection in humans. We devised an experiment on human subjects, based on identification of the main symmetry in a geometrical shape while varying its internal texture, whose results have been compared with the analysis of a fuzzy model of symmetry search incorporating elements form human experience. Results are in agreement with the gestalt model: rotational symmetry detection is also affected by factors perceived as less significative, such as the stimulus' internal texture, and this preference can easily be included in an automatic detection algorithm.

Passive time-multiplexing super-resolved technique for axially moving targets
2013
In this paper we present a super-resolving approach for detecting an axially moving target that is based upon a time-multiplexing concept and that overcomes the diffraction limit set by the optics of an imaging camera by a priori knowledge of the high-resolution background in front of which the target is moving. As the movement trajectory is axial, the approach can be applied to targets that are approaching or moving away from the camera. By recording a set of low-resolution images at different target axial positions, the super-resolving algorithm weights each image by demultiplexing them using the high-resolution background image and provides a super-resolved image of the target. Theoretic…
Compressed electroweakino spectra at the LHC
2013
In this work, we examine the sensitivity of monojet searches at the LHC to directly produced charginos and neutralinos (electroweakinos) in the limit of small mass splitting, where the traditional multilepton plus missing energy searches loose their sensitivity. We first recast the existing 8 TeV monojet search at CMS in terms of a SUSY simplified model with only light gauginos (winos and binos) or only light higgsinos. The current searches are not sensitive to MSSM like production cross sections, but would be sensitive to models with 2-20 times enhanced production cross section, for particle masses between 100 GeV and 250 GeV. Then we explore the sensitivity in the 14 TeV run of the LHC. H…
A measurement of the antineutrino asymmetry B in free neutron decay
2005
Abstract We have measured the antineutrino asymmetry B in neutron beta decay, i.e., the correlation of the neutron spin and the antineutrino momentum, with a new method. Our result is B = 0.967 ± 0.006 stat ± 0.010 syst = 0.967 ± 0.012 . Statistical and systematic uncertainty can be considerably reduced in future experiments.
Measurements of Branching Fractions andCP-Violating Asymmetries inBMeson Decays to Charmless Two-Body States Containing aK0
2003
We present measurements of branching fractions and \CP-violating asymmetries in decays of $B$ mesons to two-body final states containing a \Kz. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 88 million \upsbb decays collected with the \babar detector at the \pep2 asymmetric-energy $B$ Factory at SLAC. We measure $\BR(\Bp\to\Kz\pip) = (22.3 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.1)\times 10^{-6}$, $\BR(\Bz\to\Kz\piz) = (11.4\pm 1.7\pm 0.8)\times 10^{-6}$, $\BR(\Bp\to\Kzb\Kp) < 2.5\times 10^{-6}$, and $\BR(\Bz\to\KzKzb) < 1.8\times 10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, and the upper limits are at the 90% confidence level. In addition, the following \CP-violating a…
