ORNAMENTAL SIGN LANGUAGE IN THE FIRST ORDER TRACERY BELTS

2010

18 pages; We consider ornamental sign language of first order where principles of sieve displacement, of asymmetric building blocks as base of ornament symmetry, color exchangeability and side equivalence principles work. The generic aspects of sieve and genesis of ornamental pattern and ornament sign in it are discussed. The hemiolia principle for ornamental genesis is introduced. The discoverer of most of these principles were artist Modris Tenisons [4, 5, 6, 7 (refs. 23, 24), 8 (ref. 65)]. Here we apply systematical research using simplest mathematical arguments. We come to conclusions that mathematical argument in arising ornament is of much more significance than simply symmetries in i…

Structure of keyhole limpet hemocyanin type 1 (KLH1) at 15 Å resolution by electron cryomicroscopy and angular reconstitution † 1 †This article is de…

1997

Abstract A three-dimensional reconstruction of keyhole limpet hemocyanin type 1 (KLH1) has been obtained using electron cryomicroscopy at liquid helium temperatures and single particle image processing. The use of a high-contrast embedding medium, 1% (w/v) glucose and 2% (w/v) ammonium molybdate (pH 7.0), enables high-resolution electron micrographs to be recorded close to focus, i.e. with excellent transfer of high-resolution information, while maintaining enough image contrast to localise the individual macromolecules in the images. When low-pass filtered to ∼45 A resolution, the new 15 A resolution reconstruction is very similar to the earlier reconstructions of gastropodan hemocyanins o…

Fluctuating asymmetry and copulation success in lekking black grouse

1997

Abstract In lekking black grouse, Tetrao tetrix males at the centre of the leks obtain more copulations than males at the edges. We found that males with territories at the edge of the lek obtained fewer matings and also have the most asymmetric tarsi. However, when considering the tail ornament (the lyre) no correlation between asymmetry and mating success was found. Although females are unlikely to select males on the basis of tarsus symmetry, asymmetry in this trait may reflect male condition. We suggest that males in poor condition, as reflected by higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry in the tarsi, do not achieve central positions on the lek arena. This would account for the lower suc…

Electrodynamic Control of the Combustion Characteristics and Heat Energy Production

2015

ABSTRACTElectric field effects (EFE) on combustion characteristics, heat energy production, and composition of polluting emissions have been investigated experimentally for different types of fuels (natural gas, biomass) providing experimental study of the EFE in a district heating boiler and complex modeling experiments in a small-scale pilot device. The DC field-induced variations of the produced heat energy, efficiency of heat energy production, flame characteristics, and the composition of polluting emissions have been studied for a positively biased axially inserted electrode and negatively biased (grounded) heat surfaces by varying the applied DC voltage, net current, and consumed ele…

Symmetry operators in computer vision

1996

Abstract Symmetry plays a remarkable role in perception problems. For example, peaks of brain activity are measured in correspondence with visual patterns showing symmetry . Relevance of symmetry in vision was already noted by Koler in 1929. Here, properties of a symmetry operator are reported and a new algorithm to measure local symmetries is proposed. Its performance is tested on segmentation of complex visual patterns and the classification of sparse images.

The iterative object symmetry transform

2005

This paper introduces a new operator named the Iterated Object Transform that is computed by combining the Object Symmetry Transform with the morphological operator erosion. This new operator has been applied on both binary and gray levels images showing the ability to grasp the internal structure of a digital object. We present some experiments on real images in face analysis.

Some conventional and unconventional educational column stability Problems

2006

Two interesting problems are considered for enriching the curriculum of the Strength of Materials course, in the light of recently developed functionally graded materials (FGMs), characterized with the smooth variation of the elastic modulus. These are problems associated with buckling of columns with variable flexural rigidity along the axis of the column. A simple semi-inverse method is proposed for determining closed-form solutions of axially inhomogeneous columns. In order for the presentation to be given in one package, the conventional problems are also recapitulated along with the novel ones. The main approach adopted here is the use of the second-order differential equation, instea…

Signaling through the 2008 Beijing Olympics—Using Mega Sport Events to Change the Perception and Image of the Host

2011

Abstract This paper provides an analysis on internet news reports about the Beijing Olympics 2008 and how China signaled throughout the event to external target groups. The analysis shows how the geographical areas China, USA, Europe and the “Rest of the World” perceived the Games. The results were interpreted regarding the principal agent theories' signaling to reduce information asymmetry for business and tourism and costly signaling to generate symbolic capital. Seven hundred and forty news reports were collected between 1 July and 30 September 2008, using Google Alerts with the keywords “Olympic Games Beijing 2008”. The reports were analysed with a quantitative content analysis using a …

Exploring relationships between customer-based brand equity and its drivers and consequences in the hotel context. An impact-asymmetry assessment

2016

The development of customer-based brand equity plays a critical role in tourism. This paper attempts to study which variables contribute to brand equity creation and to examine whether brand loyalty can be considered as a consequence of brand equity in the hotel context. In addition, it seeks to provide a more detailed insights into possible asymmetric effects among customer-based brand equity and its drivers and consequences. Four constructs are found to influence significantly brand equity: two perceptual (image and perceived quality) and two relational variables (trust and affective commitment). Additionally, both behavioural and attitudinal components of loyalty are confirmed as brand e…
