Improvements in the spatial resolution of synchrotron-based X-ray probes have reached the nano-scale and they, nowadays, constitute a powerful platform for the study of semiconductor nanostructures and nanodevices that provides high sensitivity without destroying the material. Three complementary hard X-ray synchrotron techniques at the nanoscale have been applied to the study of individual nanowires (NWs) containing non-polar GaN/InGaN multi-quantum-wells. The trace elemental sensitivity of X-ray fluorescence allows one to determine the In concentration of the quantum wells and their inhomogeneities along the NW. Observation of optical Smith-Purcell radiation at an electron beam energy of 855 MeV.

Smith-Purcell radiation, generated when a beam of charged particles passes close to the surface of a diffraction grating, has been studied in the visible spectral range at wavelengths of 360 and 546 nm with the low emittance 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Abstract In various experiments it has been demonstrated that the circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD) is not only observed from oriented initial states (aligned adsorbed molecules or magnetised samples), but also arises as a consequence of the scattering of photoelectrons from the surrounding atoms in a solid or an adsorbate. Selective guest inclusion of linear C6 hydrocarbons in a Zn(ii) 1D coordination polymer

Trapping of volatile unbranched C6 hydrocarbons (hexane, 1-hexene, and 1-hexyne) in a 1D coordination polymer is reported. The guest inclusion was studied quantitatively by 1H-NMR analysis and thermogravimetric measurements, while synchrotron single-crystal diffraction data allowed advancing the view of their confinement into linear CP channels. Adsorption experiments performed through solid/vapour processes on microcrystals of CP 1 showed a certain degree of selectivity for 1-hexyne, which could be rationalized by its larger dipole moment.
Contribution of the synchrotron diffraction study of the oxidation of uranium dioxide at 250○C

The structural evolution of UO 2 during its oxidation into U 3 O 8 at 250°C in air was studied by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction on the D2AM-CRG beamline at ESRF. The aim of this study is to determine the phases which are likely to appear during a long term storage of used nuclear fuel. Our results are in disagreement with the literature where the existence of the secondary cubic phase is not reported, and an α-U 3 O 7 tetragonal phase (c/a < 1) is also mentioned but definitely not observed. Phase separation as a key to a thermoelectric high efficiency

This work elucidates the possible reasons for the outstanding, but never reproduced thermoelectric properties of the doped Ti(0.5)Zr(0.25)Hf(0.25)NiSn Heusler compounds. The structural investigations done via synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements and scanning electron microscope measurements, which clearly show that the microstructure consists of three temperature stable C1(b) phases with possible semi-coherent interfaces, are presented. The exceptional thermoelectric properties are due to this intrinsic phase separation. It is possible to reproduce the high Figure of Merit values with ZT = 1.2 at 830 K. Morphology and structures in double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface

The structure of double-, triple- and quadruple-chain phospholipid monolayers has been studied by Synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The double-chain mixed- linkage species exhibit an oblique structure at all pressures investigated. The triple-chain phospholipids show at lower lateral pressures a rectangular unit cell with a phase transition at higher pressures to a hexagonal packing of vertically arranged chains. The quadruple- chain lipid exhibits only the hexagonal phase structure. The position of the ether linkage and of the branched chain on the glycerol backbone has also a strong influence on the monolayer structures. Several ternary oxides with industrial applications, but also interesting for basic research, have been studied recently at room temperature under high-pressure conditions using synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. In this article, part of these experiments will be summarized. The studied materials include zircon-type vanadates and scheelite-type tungstates as well as other oxides related to them.
