The Rise and Fall of the Unhasu Orchestra
2018
The Ŭnhasu Orchestra was a major North Korean ensemble in 2009–2013. It was established by Kim Jong Il (Kim Chŏng’il, 김정일) and was composed of young musicians and singers of both genders, several of them having studied in foreign higher educational institutions in countries like Austria, Italy, Russia and China. Its members represented the core class of the North Korean society. It was ostensibly meant to display the high quality of North Korean art and engage at this level also in international cultural diplomacy, both in terms of physical visits, and in terms of DVD and internet publishing. In addition to domestic concerts, the Ŭnhasu Orchestra performed with visiting Russian artists, and…
Itsemurhatartunnan taikauskosta: The Moth Diaries (2011) ja 13 Reasons Why (2017)
2018
Artikkeli käsittelee kahden itsemurhaa kuvaavan populaarikulttuurin tapausesimerkin, The Moth Diaries -elokuvan ja 13 Reasons Why -sarjan, ja tabun käsitteen välityksellä itsemurhaan liitettyä tartunnan pelkoa ja tämän pelon ilmenemistä viihteen ja median representaatioita säätelevässä Werther-efektissä. Keväällä 2017 julkaistun kohutun 13 Reasons Why -Netflix-sarjan ensimmäisen kauden vastaanotto ilmentää sosiologien, psykologien ja kansanterveystieteilijöiden tunnetuksi tekemää Werther-efektiä, median välittämäksi pelättyä itsemurhatartuntaa. Kanadalainen kauhudraama The Moth Diaries (2011) taas käsittelee sisällössään vanhemmalta lapselle periytyvää itsemurhatartuntaa vampyyrin hahmon vä…
Issues in e-learning quality assurance
2011
As a decisive factor, the future of any discipline rests on quality, and e-learning is no exception. Due to its multidisciplinary nature, the contribution from various fields such as education, technology, and economy are needed to achieve quality, thereby creating rich learning experience. Undertaking such a task is challenging according to Pawlowski and Ehler (2006) because "it is necessary to find a valid perspective and definition of quality. This requires an answer to the question for which processes of educational scenario quality development has to be carried out, which quality and according to which perspective it is defined." Being diverse and situational/context dependent, there s…
Cultural Politics of Love and Provision among Poor Youth in Urban Tanzania
2015
This article examines how urban youth in the poorest neighbourhoods of Dar es Salaam negotiate the terms of transactional intimacy, that is, heterosexual relations in which men are expected to provide for women materially. Using the concept of ‘affect’, I argue that this negotiation involves different levels of male providership, as well as moral values attached to notions of ‘true love’ and the Swahili concept of tamaa. Poor men and women view their agency differently within transactional intimacy, with women describing themselves as exploited by men who do not fulfil their end of the transactional bargain, and poor men portraying themselves as deeply disempowered in comparison to wealthie…

Behavior change types with Pokémon GO
2017
Digital games1 are one of the most popular entertainment media in the world. Teir allure and widespread popularity makes them an interesting and highly potential platform for behavior change atempts. In this paper, we investigate what types of behavior changes Pokémon GO has promoted or induced among its players. Te study is based on an online survey sample of 262 Pokémon GO players, collected using the critical incident technique and analyzed using qualitative methods. Te analysis shows that the behavior changes induced by Pokémon GO are not just restricted to increased physical activity or social behavior but are actually much more multifaceted: players were more social, found their routi…
Phantom/liminal fat and feminist theories of the body
2017
This article brings together two concepts, ‘phantom fat’ and ‘liminal fat’, which both aim to grasp how fat in contemporary culture becomes a kind of material immateriality, corporeality in suspension. Comparing the spheres of representation and experience, we examine the challenges and usefulness of these concepts, and feminist fat studies perspectives more broadly, to feminist scholarship on the body. We ask what connects and disconnects fat corporeality and fat studies from ways of theorising other embodied differences, like gender, ‘race’, disability, class and sexuality, especially when thinking through their perceived mutability or removability, and assumptions about their relevance …
Does Finland Need Raciolinguistics?
2017
A growing number of applied linguists and language educators in the US/North American context advocate for and from a scholarly perspective which views language issues in relation to racial issues and vice versa. The emergent field of raciolinguistics highlights the relationships between language and race/racism and has brought about research that investigates their intersections. Should scholars in Finland adopt (and adapt) such an approach to scholarly work? Three Finland-based scholars explore this question in a question ("prompt") - response format.

Dispositif of creativity, gender and the precarisation of artistic work
The aim of this article is to open up theoretical perspectives to the research of the status of the artists and especially on its gender analysis. My principal points of references are the writings of a British cultural theorist Angela McRobbie and her concepts of disposi- tif of creativity and postfeminist sexual contract. The Foucauldian concept dispositif of creativity is used to illustrate how the features of artistic working conditions are in uenced by the wider and creativity-emphasizing current of changes taking place in the general sphere of production, therefore making the working con…
