Electrospun nanofibers: role of nanofibers in water remediation and effect of experimental variables on their nano topography and application process…

2021

Water is the elixir of life and the most elementary need for the survival of human beings on planet Earth. With rapid industrialization, globalization and human exploitation, natural water resources are diminishing at a startling rate wherein availability of potable water has drastically decreased in recent times and hence membrane technology is a highly pursued area for water purification. The simple and cost-effective electrospinning technique has evolved to be a state-of-the-art method for developing nanofibers of tailored thickness and diameters by combining a broad range of starting materials. This comprehensive review emphasizes on the demonstration of electrospun nanofibers based on …

A survey of photocatalytic materials for environmental remediation

2012

Abstract Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process which has been the subject of a huge amount of studies related to air cleaning and water purification. All these processes have been carried out mainly by using TiO 2 -based materials as the photocatalysts and ca. 75% of the articles published in the last 3 years is related to them. This review illustrates the efforts in the search of alternative photocatalysts that are not based on TiO 2 , with some exceptions concerning particularly innovative modifications as nanoassembled TiO 2 or TiO 2 composites with active carbon, graphite and fullerene. Papers reporting preparation, characterization and testing of binary, ternary…

Preparation of fouling resistant and highly perm-selective novel PSf/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membrane for efficient water purification

2022

International audience; To meet the rising global demand for water, it is necessary to develop membranes capable of efficiently purifying contaminated water sources. Herein, we report a series of novel polysulfone (PSf)/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membranes highly permeable, selective, and fouling resistant. The membranes are composed of two-dimensional (2D) graphite oxide (GO) layers embedded with vanillin as porogen and PSf as the base polymer. There is a growing interest in addressing the synergistic effect of GO and vanillin on improving the permeability and antifouling characteristics of membranes. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to perform detailed physicoche…

Stable isotope and fatty acid analysis reveal the ability of sea cucumbers to use fish farm waste in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture

2022

Stable isotope ratios, carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), and fatty acids validated the trophic connection between farmed fish in a commercial nearshore fish farm and sea cucumbers in the Mediterranean Sea. This dual tracer approach evaluated organic matter transfer in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and the ability of sea cucumbers to incorporate fish farm waste (fish faeces and uneaten artificial fish feed) into their tissue. Between October 2018 and September 2019, Holothuria (Roweothuria) poli Delle Chiaje, 1824, co-cultured at IMTA sites directly below one of the commercial fish cage , at 10 m and 25 m from the selected fish cage, and at two reference sites over 800 m from …

Eribulin Mesylate for the Treatment of Metastatic Hormone-refractory and Triple-negative Breast Cancer: A Multi-institutional Real-world Report on Ef…

2021

Objective Eribulin mesylate (EM) is a fully synthetic macrocyclic ketone analogue of the marine natural product halichondrin. EM has been reported to be active in metastatic breast cancer. In this paper, we report efficacy and safety of data of EM in a retrospective, real-world series of patients with poor prognosis, hormone-refractory, or triple-negative metastatic breast cancer. Materials and methods The analysis was carried out at 4 interrelated oncology centers. EM was delivered at the dose of 1.4 mg/m2 in 100 mL of normal saline over 2 to 5 minutes on days 1 and 8 every 21 days. EM was continued until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Side effects were reported every cycle …

Pictorial Real, Historical Intermedial. Digital Aesthetics and the Representation of History in Eric Rohmer’sThe Lady and the Duke

2016

AbstractInThe Lady and the Duke(2001), Eric Rohmer provides an unusual and “conservative” account of the French Revolution by recurring to classical and yet “revolutionary” means. The interpolation between painting and film produces a visual surface which pursues a paradoxical effect of immediacy and verisimilitude. At the same time though, it underscores the represented nature of the images in a complex dynamic of “reality effect” and critical meta-discourse. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the main discursive strategies deployed by the film to disclose an intermedial effectiveness in the light of its original digital aesthetics. Furthermore, it focuses on the problematic relation…

Integrable systems and moduli spaces of curves

2016

This document has the purpose of presenting in an organic way my research on integrable systems originating from the geometry of moduli spaces of curves, with applications to Gromov-Witten theory and mirror symmetry. The text contains a short introduction to the main ideas and prerequisites of the subject from geometry and mathematical physics, followed by a synthetic review of some of my papers (listed below) starting from my PhD thesis (October 2008), and with some open questions and future developements. My results include: • the triple mirror symmetry among P 1-orbifolds with positive Euler characteristic , the Landau-Ginzburg model with superpotential −xyz + x p + y q + z r with 1 p + …

Mixotrophy in Pyroleae (Ericaceae) from Estonian boreal forests does not vary with light or tissue age

2017

SPE IPM UB; International audience; In temperate forests, some green plants, namely pyroloids (Pyroleae, Ericaceae) and some orchids, independently evolved a mode of nutrition mixing photosynthates and carbon gained from their mycorrhizal fungi (mixotrophy). Fungal carbon is more enriched in 13C than photosynthates, allowing estimation of the proportion of carbon acquired heterotrophically from fungi in plant biomass. Based on 13C enrichment, mixotrophic orchids have previously been shown to increase shoot autotrophy level over the growth season and with environmental light availability. But little is known about the plasticity of use of photosynthetic versus fungal carbon in pyroloids. Met…

Effect of 1-methylcyclopropene on ripening of melting flesh peaches and nectarines

2004

Abstract 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), an ethylene action inhibitor, was applied to early season, melting flesh stone fruit to try to extend their shelf life. ‘Almog’ and ‘Oded’, two white flesh peaches, and ‘April Glow’, a yellow flesh nectarine, were tested. Application of 1-MCP was at both 20 and 0 °C for 5, 10 and 20 h and at concentrations from 0.5 to 20 μl l −1 . When treated at 0 °C the fruits were stored for 5 days before removal to 20 °C for ripening. 1-MCP slowed fruit softening in a concentration and time dependent manner, extending the period before the fruits became over-soft. The inhibition of softening was greater when fruits were treated and held at 20 °C than if they were t…
