Approximate Bayesian Computation for Forecasting in Hydrological models

2018

Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is a statistical tool for handling parameter inference in a range of challenging statistical problems, mostly characterized by an intractable likelihood function. In this paper, we focus on the application of ABC to hydrological models, not as a tool for parametric inference, but as a mechanism for generating probabilistic forecasts. This mechanism is referred as Approximate Bayesian Forecasting (ABF). The abcd water balance model is applied to a case study on Aipe river basin in Columbia to demonstrate the applicability of ABF. The predictivity of the ABF is compared with the predictivity of the MCMC algorithm. The results show that the ABF method as …

Diagonal space time hadamard codes with erasure decoding algorithm

2005

A major challenge in the area of space time (ST) codes is to find codes suitable for efficient decoding, thus overcoming the problem of many existing ST code designs which require maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. A solution could be to apply single-input single-output (SISO) channel codes and theory over temporal channel fading to the multi-input single-output (MISO) code construction and classical suboptimum decoding methods. For these purposes, an ST code construction which allows the use of efficient decoding algorithms is described. We propose a concatenated code, where the inner code is the diagonal ST Hadamard (D-STH) code with Paley constructions and the outer code is an algebraic b…

Variability in δ13C values between individual Daphnia ephippia: Implications for palaeo-studies

2018

The stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C value) of Daphnia spp. resting egg shells (ephippia) provides information on past changes in Daphnia diet. Measurements are typically performed on samples of ≥20 ephippia, which obscures the range of values associated with individual ephippia. Using a recently developed laser ablation-based technique, we perform multiple δ13C analyses on individual ephippia, which show a high degree of reproducibility (standard deviations 0.1–0.5‰). We further measured δ13C values of 13 ephippia from surface sediments of three Swiss lakes. In the well-oxygenated lake with low methane concentrations, δ13C values are close to values typical for algae (−31.4‰) and the rang…

Growth potential of Listeria monocytogenes strains in mixed ready-to-eat salads

2009

In this study, a microbiological challenge test in three artificially contaminated retail mixed mayonnaise-based ready-to-eat salads stored at refrigerator temperatures (3°C and 7°C) for 48h was carried out. Shrimp-tomato salad, smoked ham salad and garlic cheese salad were separately contaminated by a suspension of particular Listeria monocytogenes strains. The number of L. monocytogenes, Enterobacteriaceae, staphylococci and total plate count (CFU/g) was determined. Listeria monocytogenes growth potential in the salads was calculated and evaluated. A significant increase in total plate count and L. monocytogenes count throughout storage of all three investigated salads was found. Enteroba…

The Technological Evaluation of Sourdoughs Prepared in Different Conditions

2015

Abstract The use of sourdough in bread production lead to development of safe, healthy and more palatable product and also contribute to the sustainability of breadmaking through low demands for additives and preservatives. Sourdoughs type I were obtained with different flour: water ratio: 1:0.6; 1:1; 1:2 and 1:3 and different refreshment ratio 1:3 and 1:4. The sourdough were evaluated for theirs pH, Total Titratable Acidity (TTA), lactic and acetic contents, gas production power. The use of low water level induce a higher TTA and pH but the yield of acid production was more favourable for the sourdough with higher water content. The higher water content was favourable to formation of lacti…

A new class of spaces with all finite powers Lindelof

2013

We consider a new class of open covers and classes of spaces defined from them, called "iota spaces". We explore their relationship with epsilon-spaces (that is, spaces having all finite powers Lindelof) and countable network weight. An example of a hereditarily epsilon-space whose square is not hereditarily Lindelof is provided.

Reduction of ICD Shock Burden by Eliminating Back-Up Pacing Induced Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias

2014

ICD Shock Reduction by Subthreshold Pacing Introduction Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) may have the capacity to provoke or worsen ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VT). It has been reported that ICD shocks by itself can increase mortality. This study aimed to determine the role of back-up pacing-induced VT (PIT) in the overall ICD shock burden by avoiding pause-related ventricular back-up pacing. Methods and Results A population of 550 single-chamber ICD patients was studied. Of them, 17 (3%, 69 ± 16 years, 14 male) patients had documented episodes of PIT. A total of 431 VT episodes were documented including 89 (21%) due to PIT. In 3 patients, VT events were exclusively PITs. Aft…

The relationship between bipolar disorder and alcoholism: a controlled family study.

1995

SYNOPSISBipolar disorder and alcoholism are familial disorders. The familial–genetic relationship between both is controversial and has received insufficient study. This study explores whether bipolar disorder and alcoholism share familial risk factors, and whether the co-occurrence of lifetime diagnosis of bipolar disorder and alcoholism is familial. We report on first-degree relatives of 146 consecutively admitted patients with either bipolar disorder or/and alcoholism; relatives of the patients (in total 728 relatives directly interviewed) were compared with first-degree relatives of 109 general population probands (320 relatives directly interviewed). Overlap between the familial compon…
