Altered tactile localization and spatiotemporal integration in complex regional pain syndrome patients

Background In complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), altered perception of the affected hand and neglect-like symptoms of the affected body side are common features. In this study, we presented tactile stimuli to the affected hands in CRPS patients and matched healthy controls. Methods The participants' task was to point at the perceived positions of the stimuli using a tracking device. The spatial coordinates of the perceived positions were analysed for accuracy and consistency. We also presented patterns consisting of two stimuli at distinct positions with a delay of 100 ms. Understanding of tactile pictures in visual impaired children

The present PhD aims at understanding how Visual Impaired (VI) children process the tactile pictures that illustrate the tactile books specially designed for them. Our work is organized around two main axes of analysis. The first axis concentrates on the child who explores the tactile images, while the second axis focuses on the impact that the properties of these images can have on children’s haptic processing. I investigate whether it is justified to postulate tactile field analogous in its properties to visual field. I argue that the answer is both ‘yes’ and ‘no’ due to the dual nature of touch: touch is both an interoceptive modality which presents states of one’s body and an exteroceptive modality which presents external entities. More specifically, the interoceptive tactile space, in which tactile bodily sensations are experienced to be localized, has a character of a spatial field. On the other hand, the exteroceptive tactile space, in which external, tactile objects are experienced to be localized does not have field-status.

Evidence of beat perception via purely tactile stimulation

Humans can easily tap in synchrony with an auditory beat but not with an equivalent visual rhythmic sequence, suggesting that the sensation of meter (i.e. of an underlying regular pulse) may be inherently auditory. We assessed whether the perception of meter could also be felt with tactile sensory inputs. We found that, when participants were presented with identical rhythmic sequences filled with either short tones or hand stimulations, they could more efficiently tap in synchrony with strongly rather than weakly metric sequences.
