Letting Art Teach Aesthetics, Math and Language
2020
This papers presents a practical work model as well as an educational theory discussion on the status and potential of art work in teaching and learning math in early childhood education. The central idea is to let the child’s free creative art activity reveal, or “teach”, whatever mathematical thinking was inherent in the creative process. Paying careful attention to art and math adequate language in “meta talks” with children about their art work, is found to be a rich tool in enhancing the young learner’s development of aesthetic, numeric and linguistic literacies in gainful interplay. A field study in preschool teacher education is reviewed, including a mapping of Alan Bishop’s [2] math…

This dissertation studies the issue of disposal in Finnish art museums. It is a research in the field of museology, in which museography plays a significant role. The field of museology functions as a science bridging theory and practice. In the research, museum collection management is divided into seven areas: acquisition, inventory, condition assessment, value assessment, conservation, upkeep and disposal. It is essential that collection management be viewed as a unified chain of operations, starting from acquisition and ending in disposal. This creates a bridge from the start of collection management to its end procedures, at which point the total disposal of an item is a possibility. A…
Taide kulttuurisena kohtaamispaikkana taidekasvatuksessa
2004
Taidekasvatuksen näkökulmasta mahdollisuudet vaikuttaa on toisinaan esitetty koko yhteiskuntaa muovaaviksi.- Taidekasvatuksen vaikutukset näkyvät ensisijaisesti arkisissa tilanteissa, mahdollisuuksina löytää uusia tapoja toimia ja kohdata muita. Taiteellisella toiminnalla voidaan luo…
Huoli kuvasta : merkitys, mieli, materiaalisuus
2017
This research is a hybrid of a monograph and a multiple-article dissertation. Its theoretical starting point is a phenomenologically based view of the being of the image, in which Georges Didi-Huberman´s work plays a central role. For him, as well as for Mieke Bal, a historical work of art is never only in the distant past only but also exists in the present actuality. This makes the temporality of the Image extremely complex. The Image can be encountered only “pre-posterously” (Bal) or by reading it “against the grain” (Didi-Huberman). The Image is necessarily anachronistic; it is not in time but opens up time. This fact should be taken into account not only in art history, but also in art…

How Museums Make Us Feel : Affective Niche Construction and the Museum of Non-Objective Painting
2021
Art museums are built to elicit a wide variety of feelings, emotions, and moods from their visitors. While these effects are primarily achieved through the artworks on display, museums commonly deploy numerous other affect-inducing resources as well, including architectural solutions, audio guides, lighting fixtures, and informational texts. Art museums can thus be regarded as spaces that are designed to influence affective experiencing through multiple structures and mechanisms. At face value, this may seem like a somewhat self-evident and trivial statement to make. However, in this article, I argue that niche construction theory enables us to make several illuminating observations about t…
